i plan on getting this but i do not know anything about EU, i've only played ck2. what are the differences?
is declaring war a similar way? i heard there is no marriage alliance to take over another country/title through bloodline.

Eu3, when compared to CK2, is a lot more focussed on your country then on the individual people. So basically, the whole duke/marriage/family/character management parts are completely gone. On the other hand, warfare is a bit more complex (though not as complex as HoI), you do more things about trade and industry (though less then in Victoria), and diplomacy/war is also based on a state level instead of an individual person level. Which means that there are alliances without marriages, wars without claims and with different goals, things like that. State marriages still exist, but due to the lack of an actual character system work completely different. Usually taking over another country involves either diplomatic or military dominance.

This is all EU3 of course. I'd expect some things to change in EU4, but the general focus on state level things, and a more wholeistic approach to statecraft when compared to CK2 will probably still be there.

Loved EU3, hated CK2. Looking forward to the sequel.

The only character in the game is your king. But he isnt a playable character, he is just an abstraction of management/diplomacy/war/science stats. You basically control the whole country, and there are no sub rulers like counts/dukes. You are just the highest lord of whatever state you pick (although there is a HRE but its more of diplomacy thing, you cant use other states within the empire's troops for example).

There is more focus on merchants, with actual merchant units and trade centers, and colonization of whole provinces. You still build up invididual proinces the way you build up your provinces in CK but that is about it. And the map covers the whole world.

Other 2 said it pretty well.
Do note, though. If youre on their forums (paradox forums, that is) and own a game (registered the game) On jan 2013, they gave out Eu3 Chronicles for free to everyone.
You can still PM the community manager (who made the sticky thread, in the Eu3 forums) and get a key for steam for free.
I did it this morning at work, had it like 10 min later. He was online at the time, though.

I really wish they would be very historical. For example, if you choose to play as the Native America tribes, you can alter history by having gunpowder technology before the colonists arrive. You drive off Europeans from the continent, and Spain/England no longer becomes a global power because they dont have colonies. The change of British history means America is never born, and then Axis powers end up winning WW2....all because you played as native americans who prevented the colonists from ever landing.

Hm? So do you wish them to be more historical, or less?

Because in EU3, you can already do all of that (well, except for the WW2 part), except for getting gunpowder before the colonists arrive. I successfully created a great Cherokee Empire consisting of most of the Americas after fighting off european colonists for 2 centuries and slowly assimilating their technology. Then i started colonizing Spain. Of course at that point you are so far from real history that even if a second World War would happen, that one would have nothing to do with the one we know.

If you want to do all of history in one playthrough, i think there are ways to import your gamestate from one game to another via mods, though you might need to do some modding yourself. So you could play a kind of consistent word through CK2, Eu3, Vic2, HoI3. If that is what you were looking for.

I always felt that the biggest differences in feeling from both games was:

1. The Scale and the fact that EU3 definetly has different stages, Medieval (early game), Colonization(mid game), and End game. CK2 is smaller (for obvious reasons) and is mostly the same from the start to the end (you're just a lot stronger).
2. Ck2 is a lot about micromanaging relations and tricks to obtain Casus Belli. Appart from a few laws you don't have that much national decisions to make. EU3 on the other hand has 0 character relations and I feel diplomacy is a bit subpar, on the other hand the game focus on national decisions (government types, ideas, techs and finances) and conquests are a lot more straightforward.

Worth noting that in CK2 you instantly raise your troops and the number depends on how much your vassals like you while in EU3 you just build units according to a max supply determined by buildings and the size of your country (+/- bonuses). However, imo, the feeling of war is almost the same. Even though EU has more stuff going on in wars in the numbers department, I never felt much of a difference.

Save Game conversion mod exist. Never tested them but there are some people that like going CK2 > EU3 > Vic2 with the same nation transplanted from one game to another with conversion tools.

Dunno, EU3 has stuff like scorched earth and scary mountains, plus a really bad supply situation in enemy territory. The combination of this leads to a rather large defenders advantage, which means that you can actually win against stronger foes, or at least stall them out until someone else notices that their troops are busy elsewhere and attacks them or they accept a white peace/some token win.

In CK2 it is mostly just running your largest armies facefirst into the largest enemy army, and then chasing dozens of small armies sieging your stuff. Combat is kind of tedious, but not very tactical here.

Avoiding ennemies on hills or rivers doesn't really change the feeling of it, and I also do that in CK2 even though yeah the bonus/malus have less of an impact. You still make bigstacks, avoid combat malus, then wait X months to occupy the territory. Feels pretty much the same to me.

And you still have to chase after running away armies or rebels poping here and there. At least yeah I'm happy for hunt rebels.
Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

Have you guys been following the development diaries ?

There are 36 out right now, with 1 additionally coming out each week.

I hope we can get a multiplayer session up once the game is out, provided the multiplayer works at the start :p

The only part of terrain worth caring about in EU3 are mountains, and things that give you attrition. Everything else is more or less irrelevant. Sure, a +1 or +2 on something is nice, but usually not what decides battles.

Yeah, that, or at least the WE part, happened a lot during my World Conquest. I would always forget a 20 stack somewhere in sibiria where they would starve and get reinforced for 100 years.

And because my WE is maxed, i always had to have stacks in Sibiria to combat those wicked rebels there. I don't even know what they do. If they just wouldn't tell me that they are rebelling, i doubt anyone would notice. It is not like those provinces actually produce anything useful at all.
