The things you get are 1) Beta access (need loads of friends for that), 2) DLC's, 3) Eu III, 4) Strategy guide.

To this day the multiplayer is plagued with Out Of Sync Errors/Checksum issues and eu3 has been out since 2007. If I remember correctly even paradox's own metaservers are still down. I expect the modding community around the game to do better than the actual devs! Take a look at death and taxes mod for eu3 and you will understand my point of view. The modding community is outstanding while the company behind it just puts out terrible products. In before they rehash eu4 and call it Victoria 3/4, then sell it to you at a premium cost $50/60 USD. So until I get more information about eu4 I am going to hold onto my cash. Why are people so obsessed with death and taxes? I tried it and even compared to the original it was way too easy. No challenge at all. Sure the mod community brings out awesome mods but the originals are hard enough to learn for new players. I never played the multiplayer though. For me paradox games are single player games.

There is quita bit of information out on eu4 already, via the eu4 developer diaries.

This time they said several times, that they can afford to release a clean, not rushed product with extensive testing and while I have to agree that mods made the game awesome and longlasting, everyone starts with vanilla and fills their lack of gameplay in certain areas or overall depth with the mods needed. Im not sure the jump in gameplay will be worth full price, but mods/multiplayer/slightly better interface/grafics and another reward for best SP experience in years with EU3 makes it easy.

Throw away the box (disconnected my dvd player after I installed windows). If EU4 has more automation than EU3 had at release I'll probably get it. The EU series is the one of theirs I've liked the most. It is a drag building armies/navy/building late game though (not as bad as in Victoria, thank god).

As far as EU4 being problematic, we'll see. I didn't play EU3 when it came out, I only played when I got it for free after buying CK2. However CK2 worked great during its whole lifetime.

Steam is okay but I prefer if both options were open instead of everything going via steam. I don't like it when I know a company has that much power over a whole portfolio of games. edit: saying this I will definetly buy EU4 I've played sooo much EU3 and I still do.
