RNG is a paradigm of turn based games. Don't change something if it is already great.

Not to mention UFOs have blind spots in corridors and corners that you simply cannot aproach safely short of blaster bombing the walls down and you don't really swim in blaster bombs for every corner too early in the game

there's always HWPs for frontline scouting, but that can get expensive early on and they take a lot of space in a dropship.

Sorry, but people who have more refined taste aren't "happy" that a new XCOM came out and it's designed for console players. We would be "happy" if the game came out and it actually lived up to the standard set by its predecessor. I don't get the mentality that people with no standards are the ones who deserve to be catered to.

So you are saying people that liked the old game and just want better graphics and dislike the design decisions made, which make sense if you follow the reasoning of the developers, are wrong and if i like them i should feel bad for not having a "refined" taste?

Continuing my playthrough... and streaming :D

www.twitch.tv/pufftrees

Game Update
Near the end of July. Have upgraded alien fighter craft with body armor/laser weapons. I had a full wipe of my elite troops back in Early June, but I pushed on without restarting and most have re-leveled (although they are low). I have abandoned Africa but have satellite coverage of every other nation. My tech tree is nearly ended as I've been waiting to gear/tech up my troops. Now I will focus on capturing a live specimen.

Enjoy!

This game sounds 100% more awesome to me now..I thought it was just a normal turn based RPG with campaign, this sounds like a hell of a lot more awesome then that...

Brb begging wife.

I might watch some, but i have the LoL rematches to watch too :3 - Just ruined it know the winners, fuck riot, watching pufftrees in anger @ riot.

Yeah but its not really done great. Final Fantasy Tactics had RNG strategy but the system was built around very very tangible odds. If your strategy is built around 50/50 odds, its usually a bad strategy.

Also when both allies and enemies die in one or two hits, it exacerbates the RNG.

Are there no stunsticks in this game? Those made capturing aliens possible in xcom, also you still had to take losses for a capured alien until you get stunbombs. And of course you captured a lot of aliens when they blew themselves up with stunbombs.

You might be looking for a different game then. About your I could make the shot LOL. Which one? The one where you run up to the face of a 2+ meter alien and blast him with your shotgun? You would not be even called to join xcom troops lol.

There are but you need to reduce alien life to 3 hp or lower before you can use them. Also you need to sacrifice bombs or medkits or other upgrades to carry the "stunstick".

There are Stunweapons , called Arc Projector . Gotta get really close to it and the Alien hast to be pretty low on HP for it. ( Well the first ones are really low on HP anyway. )

Given the average time to live of an x-com agent, i think not getting called to join them is a good thing.

BTW, I am playing Classic Ironman and well it is not going that well :D
Already lost about 5 nations. In month 4 now. It went south when I lost the mission where you need to disarm the bomb. After that I was trailing behind and started losing troops in stupid ways, not to mention I could not shoot down one craft and it destroyed my satellite.
How did any of you finish the bomb disarm mission on Classic? Is there any trick I need to know about that one.

Also the game seems to be scripted, at least the geoscape part. Events happen not random like in old X-com but in sequence and ask you to manage your base perfectly to do them. Like that bigger alien craft. I didn't have money to upgrade my fighters by that moment in the game. Also when you capture first live sectoid things change, did any try to really not do that for a longer while to "farm" for upgrades and better tech?

Well if it's anything like the original, then yea, soldiers die, part of their job. You could take all the safety measures possible and still lose people in even "easy" small UFO recovery missions. All it takes is one reaction shot from an alien and someone went down, no matter what they were wearing.

I just replayed the original a bit last week, and the only way i found to reliably end mission without a lot of losses was to just have very good Psi-Ops, and use aliens to scout everything instead of your own soldiers. Before that, yes, you can reduce losses, but never completely negate them. Even when you blow up every single house on the map, that guy will still stand exactly behind the last piece of wall you destroyed, and reactionshot you in the face, then proceed to throw a grenade onto your squad the next turn because the 3 guys who still had time left missed him. I never expected more then half of my squad coming back from terror missions.

I agree that i often lost soldiers in the older XCOM's aswell but never before has it been so punishing to lose even a single soldier.
7 soldiers cost as much as a building so if your replacing regularly you will never be able to improve your base which causes you to fall behind in sat/engi/research.
Further you cant even decide which of the 4 classes you get so if you lose 2 assaults your stuck trying to run a a squad of rookies around to find new assaults.
Add to that the skill tree heavily favoring experiences soldiers and deaths really become crippling.

Before it was released people were expecting dead soldiers to be a big deal during missions but imo its a giant issue outside it.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

Huh? That's not at all what I said. I'm actually at a loss how you could have come away with that meaning.

I don't recall much of the original xcom (was a clueless kid when I played it, though i did play it alot), but I don't think RNG is a bad mechanic.

Once you accept that you will inevitably take losses, tailoring your tactics around that is just part of the challenge of the game.

I do think that the randomness of the classing does make it much more frustrating though.

At least they kinda try to make up for it with rewards for missions. Alot of times when chosing mssion at least one of the rewards will be a soldier of a specific class you might need / could use. Not to mention he'll already be at least sort of seasoned.

On my second playthrough after getting everyone killed on my first base assault. Everything was going well, I even perfect'd the first Terror mission on this run (the previous terror mission on my first playthrough ended in retreat after 3 of my 5 guys died) somehow. Then a few missions later, on a routine abduction mission, those really big guys with grenades show up, and wipe out all 6 of my veterans. Having to try and pick up the pieces with a squad of essentially rookies is brutal, lol.
