So I cleared Agropron Underground and went to steal the military documents from the military base. It was becoming dark and luckily I spotted two soldiers patrolling the street. I waited in a bush watching them with my binoculars until the two sorry motherfuckers turned around, took out my Heckler und Koch MP5 and kill them in a few shots. Muhaha this was easy. I sneaked further and was approaching the military base. By now it was pitch black, I could see maybe 5 meters and of course I couldn't turn on my flashlights or else I would have been spotted by the watchtowers. There was some music coming from a radio, which made it impossible to hear any footsteps. I managed to get inside the base and sneaked around the little guardhouse by the gate. Suddenly MG fire hammering through my headphones BAM BAM BAM BAM, my screen is flashing in white and yellow from the muzzle fire only 3 meters or so in front of me. One second later it is all over, my mouse is lying next to the table, my heart is beating with 200bpm and I decided to never play this at night again, whether ingame night or rl night.

Let me just run you through my first time seeing one.
I had no idea what they even were. I was completely new to STALKER. I was wandering through the world and it was the middle of the night. I started on AMK as well (because I'm a fucking boss) so I was inching forward trying now to get fucked over by anomalies and shit. So I'm shining my flashlight around (rookie mistake) and I see something in the distance -- a figure. I stop and look at it. I blink IRL and then it was gone. I start freaking the fuck out and looking around, and then BAM motherfucker. Right in my face.

I screamed like a little girl.
hahaha, my first encounter was in a concrete building in the middle of nowhere. I hear all kinds of crazy noises coming from this building, I walk up the stairs slowly, I think I saw something moving too ( it was very dark). I walk to the end of the building, I was staring at the wall for some reason and BAM I get attacked in the back, I jumped like a mad man, apparently he had been on that floor all the time but they can cloak themselves or something.

The thing about all the mutans I encountered so far is that they all make some stupid noises once they pick up on your. Something that makes you go "oh shit wtf comes now" but at least it alerts you and can't kill you in an instant. I encountered one Bloodsucker in Agroprom Underground and he screamed too. I noticed two glowing dots moving towards me and by the time he was close to me I already emptied almost a full clip of lead into him and could finish him off with 4 well placed shotgun hits. I kept track of my deaths and by now the count is 12 and every single one of those was to humans not so mutans. Mutas are scary because well they are mutans but in the end death is scarier
THE DAY HAS FINALLY COME The mod is uploaded and awaiting authorization by site administration. It's 1.2 GB of compressed data and contains an exe installer as well as a text manual.
I actually remembered earlier today that I have SoC on my steam list and I never played it because my computer couldn't handle it. Installed it today and now I see this thread!
Does anybody have like a brief faq for first time players? EG how to get rid of the over the top move bobbing was really helpful, just other stuff like basic mechanics of the game, simple spoiler free tips.

If your computer can handle it definitely get the STALKER Complete 2009 mod. The people here have argued the bad points about it, but it is still a great mod if you are new to the game imo. http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009
Just some tips edit your stalker.ltx (public documents/shoc) or use console (~) cam_inert 0 removes mouse smoothing. Good for FPS...some people say cam_slide_inert 0.0 removes head bob but may not be 100%.

edited it in the console as someone suggested in the config, cam_inert 0.1 works very well, just barely exists!
The misery mod is a drastic change in gameplay. It's a real shift towards the survival, something that wasn't really well represented by the original game. I've only tried the recon character so far, but with that one you start out with only 30 bullets. I did the quest where you can either help attack the stalkers in the hulk or kill the bandits and ended up with about 65 bullets, about 30 which were low caliber 9x19mm. I also had 15 5.56 rounds and 20 of those 9x39mm low velocity rounds.
It seem very prudent to avoid the wildlife in this mod, since you'll deplete your ammo after only one encounter -- if you survive. Recoil has increased for many guns, making close range fights difficult.
