I don't mind Refs having their own standards, I mind the standards for all teams/players being different. I also find the scheduling for this series kind of confusing. There was a long break between this game and the one before, and an equally long break between this game and the next one. We've gone over all the incidental vs purposeful contact, ref standards things a few times in the thread so idunno lol. Also how about that Brown dive?
I thought it was rather amusing? His penalty shot was hilarious, he was obviously tripped, but he fell like he was shot out of a cannon.
I don't really have a vested interest in the series... It'd be nice to watch the Nucks lose in the first round, but I don't think they can get passed the Blues anyway so I don't really care either way. I still dont get why this series has big layoffs, when every other series in... ever(?) has always had a 1 day layoff inbetween games.

Damn good night of hockey.

He was behind the net, four Canucks converge on him and he gets a couple glvoes to the face. He throws one back at Sedin, Sedin hits him back... and Magically Nolan gets the only penalty? lolwut?
Both teams got four powerplays, and LA also got a penalty shot. Only the Nolan penalty was really questionable. Also, LA got screwed by an early whistle? It was under Schneider's pad and they shoved him into the net.

Good night of hockey. Really happy that the Pens came out and actually performed like a hockey team and not a bunch of goons. Tangradi looks very good and I hope he stays in the lineup, which could be likely given that Asham is gone for the foreseeable future. He looked pretty solid playing on Crosby's wing and in grinding role.
Sullivan also had some serious jump that game too. It looked like the Flyer's defense was playing a bit too passively, so I'm not sure what they were thinking.
Hope to see something like this for game 5.
Sullivan - Crosby - Dupuis Kunitz - Malkin - Neal Cooke - Staal - Kennedy Tangradi - Park - Adams
Orpik - Letang : Putting Letang with Orpik allows him to be a little more aggressive offensively, given that Orpik is/has been pretty solid on the defensive end.
Despres - Michalek : Despres is basically the same player as Martin. He's younger, has a better shot, and can make the long stretch pass. He's also looked very good down low, with strong play in the corners.
Engelland - Hotel Nisky - Man, did Niskanen shine last night or what. Regardless of the otucome of this series, he's going to get a nice raise from his current 1.5 million from someone. Really hope the Pens can keep him around until Joe Morrow is ready.
Wouldn't be surprised to see them sit Tangradi in favor a 7th D again, though. Strait did a good job.

Despres is 1000x better than martin fyi The defense as a unit finally played well. The goals given up were PP(2 of which were backdoor goals again) so I hope they can shore that up and give us a fighting chance.
My question is when Rinaldo(spelling?) got a double game misconduct why wasnt he given a 5 minute major instead he only got a double minor for two hand punching Michalek who was on the ground?

With the Flyers horrific goaltending anything is possible and their series with Pittsburgh is far from over.

Don't forget MAF finally got his game back in the last 2 periods! Sure for large stretches of the 2nd he was looking at the ceiling and probably taking a nap while the Flyers were getting dominated, but he started controlling rebounds and made some very nice saves particularly glove saves.
Bringing Despres and Tangradi up gave the Pens some energy especially in their own zone that they badly needed.
All Flyers have to do is not get rocked so hard again. A close loss for Philly tomorrow is imo not too bad for them, but the last thing they can afford is Bryzgalov and Bobrovsky to get rocked again. I hope that happens, I'd love to see the Flyers have to go back home for Game 6 and then come back to pgh for Game 7 and lose =)
If MAF has fixed the problems in his head we finally got a series here

I do agree that right now, Despres is a better hockey player than Paul Martin. I really hope that HCDB doesn't feel any pressure to play Martin over him because of the price tag on that sack of turds. I really, really hope that Shero can find someone to take his Salary in the off season. Even if they only get a 4th or a 5th for him, Despres fills that role so much better and costs about 4 million less. With the Crosby and Staal extensions due, that money will definitely be needed.
MAF did let in a softy or two in the first period, but he shut it down afterwards. If he's found his mojo, then we might be in for another game or two.
I can't say enough good things about Tangradi last night. He got so much hype as a prospect and had underachieved so much, but last night, you could really see why he was so highly touted when Shero grabbed him in the Kunitz deal. He's continuing to mature as a player and has the size to take on anyone. If he continues to progress well, I'd love to see him playing in a top six winger role, assuming that Sullivan isn't going to be back with the team next year.
The other thing I didn't touch on was the PP. It was light years better last night. Despres can easily play point back there on the second unit, even first if they don't feel comfortable with Sullivan (which I don't after all the shorties they've given up ). That would allow to move a big gun to the second unit. Whether it's Kunitz or Neal, or even Crosby as we had seen earlier last night, the wealth gets spread a little bit. No more playing your top unit for 90 seconds or the entire PP and having them utterly exhausted.

MAF has played 2 good periods. Lets not say hes great or even good now. Team defence is non-existant in this series so its not like the goalie has much of a chance anyways. Bryzgalov has be awful but he also only needs two good periods to put Pittsburg outta the playoffs.
|
Yeah the goalies haven't played that great this series, but the defense for both teams has played far, far worse.

Yep. Certainly don't want to get ahead of things.
@ Hawk -- The Pens defense wasn't completely abysmal last night. Certainly an improvement from the previous 3 games, but could still use some work.
If anything, it looked like the Flyer's defense was just completely lost last night. Even before the score was out of reach, they looked soft and were backing up way too much.

Neither goalie - or team - has played a complete game yet. The Penguins played a complete ~50 minutes last night but they were awful again the first ten.

I hope they can find a team dumb enough to absorb that salary ala the Canadaians and Scott Gomez come to mind. I am not sure if you are local to Pittsburgh but one sports personality said Stall is very unhappy here and wants to leave when his contract is up. Personally I dont blame him he is not a #3 center, so if next year they dont put him on a line with crosby as a top 6 he will be gone

I'm not in Pittsburgh anymore, but I grew up there. I don't know how much I buy into that, but yeah, I don't see him sticking around past next season either. There's no room for him to play centre and 4 million is probably too much to keep paying for a third line centre. The only way I can see him staying past next season is moving to wing or Malkin moving to wing ( which I don't want to happen ). Those two have had pretty reasonable success playing together and that would allow Kunitz to reunite with Crosby. Jeffery is far enough along to play third line centre, or even Vitale. Both are under contract next season.
Having a top six of Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis and Staal-Malkin-Neal is not unfeasible next year. If they can't find someone to dump Martin's salary on in the offseason, I'd have to at least think they would listen to offers for Staal during next season. Coming off of his best offensive year, the return on him could be pretty significant. Could also package him with Martin for a lesser return to free up a ton of cap space to re-sign Crosby and co.
Niskanen and Tangradi are both RFA. I'd imagine they want to keep both of them, certainly Niskaken. He was at 1.5m this year, and I'd imagine they could get him to re-up around a similar price, maybe 2 million. Tangradi made 800k this year. I'm not sure if they seem him sticking with the big club next year or not, but that will weigh heavily on whether or not the try to resign him. Strait is also a RFA and I'll bet they want to keep him around too.
Sullivan, Park, and (thank god) Asham are off the books this off season. So is Big Steve Mac, but not that he was relevant in any form anyway. Nice thing about Despres is that he's only an 800k cap hit for the next 3 seasons. I would think he'll make the roster out of camp starting next season.
If anyone has Brian Burke's Black Berry number, you can let him know that Ray Shero has this awesome defenseman he'll give him for next to nothing.

Ahh alright it was Mark Madden who I personally hate. Yea I wouldnt be opposed to a Sid/Stall/Duper line either. Given the success that Malkin/Neal/Kunitz had this past year I really wouldnt change that up. Niskanen has really stepped up his game since coming over here in the trade and he should be #1 priority in the off-season. Tangradi has been a huge disappointment given all the hype we heard about him. He hasnt really shown anything. I would be all for them if they wash their hands of him.
I thought both Park and Asham played very good for us. Sullivan has been disappointing to me for the most part but occasionally shows signs of being good. Last nights goal was a howitzer. I didnt think it was him at first lol.
I would love to ship him to Toronto!
|
Mark Madden is an enormous piece of shit. I can't believe he can still get a job in the industry. Someone should ship him off to Uzbekistan or some bullshit where he belongs.
He and he alone is the only thing I do not miss about living in Pittsburgh.

LETS GO CAPS!!!!
Also LOOOOOOOOOL to whoever was working the clock at the Verizon Center. The last 9.5 seconds literally lasted roughly 20 seconds since they forgot to start the clock right away. So much for home ice advantage.

First time in 60 years that the first four games have gone into OT. Chi/Phx is a great series. Probably gonna go to 7 with 7 OT games.
