I'm curious how they're going to do the playoffs after the 4 conference champions are determined.

Top 4 teams from each confernce play each other. 1v4 and 2v3 Bo7s. Then the winners play Then the last remaining team from each conference are seeded based on their record and the winners of those play for the stanley cup. Ends up still being 4 rounds but know we might have a "west vs west" or "east vs east" stanley cup final.

is this confirmed? i knew about the first part for determining conference champions but not t hat part.

Well, thats what the link I posted four or five posts back says. So, about as confirmed as it gets.

/shrug

I think that since the divisons are uneven they should have a CFL style crossover; if the 5th place team in an 8 team divison has more points than a 4th place division they should have a head to head to see who makes the playoffs.

Playoffs just got pretty complicated, but I like the new plan. Definitely feel good that the NHL is open to such radical changes, not too much bureaucratic hullabaloo. This also makes future team relocations (see: Florida, Tampa Bay, Phoenix, Dallas) much easier to jigger, as the rivalries have been preserved. So any new team isn't going to upset the balance too much, considering the likely new NHL cities are in Canada.

Still, as a fan in the Eastern conference, I would have liked to see more Detroit for the entertainment value. Also, I would prefer having more games against the Canadiens or Bruins (as a Flyers fan), but you take what you can get. Being able to see every team might make season tickets more worthwhile.

Thats just because your team has a 7% greater chance to make the playoffs than mine.

-.-

If anything, I feel like this means one of Pheonix/CBJ is moving to Quebec soon... If it is Pheonix, then truck yeah 7 team division ftw! If not, I hate this league!

lol.

All things being equal then sure. But the new Patrick division -- calling it that because that's what it is -- has 4 legitimate top 10-12 teams (Caps, Pens, Rags, Flyers), the Canes who are normally middle of the road, the Islanders who suck but appear to be on the up, and my most hated team the Devils. As long as a member of the Devils Cup-winning years remains on the teams (Brodeur, Elias), I will have nightmares about them destroying us. The other three divisions have teams that are perennial doormats. Insert an Islanders joke here, but at least they try to get better.

I like this new format, and it gives a great breath of fresh air to the NHL. The only thing I'd like to see changed is the playoff format where the 1st seed plays the 16th, 2nd plays the 15th, etc...

If the Bruins weren't in the basement before going 14-0-1 they would be running away with the President's Trophy right now. I love watching them win so many games, they just don't stop.

Anyone take a look at the +/- board lately? In the top 8, five are Boston players. Lol.

They did it so nobody would favor them to win it twice. If you win the cup and next year you streamroll all competition in the regular season, you pretty much jynx yourself out of a title.

Besides, the Presidents cup is more important for teams that like to put up great regular season records and never win a cup like San Jose.

The Islanders are terrible though. They never get better and haven't been good for over 15 years. The bad teams are fairly evenly spread out though the far west conference is easily the toughest.

I thought the Isles would take a step forward this year, but a lot of young players didnt step up at all, and they keep playing goalies besides Montoya.

The NHL somehow managed to do realignment without destroying rivalries. I would have flipped a fucking shit if the Atlantic was broken up in anyway.

Was watching a Dallas game the other night. Is that team in financial trouble? Looked like there were about 80 people in attendance, they're ranked 29th.

Their owner is, the team does pretty well for attendance for the most part(considering the area) and have been making progress on having kids in the community take up hockey instead of other sports.

Yeah that is very much tied to team performance and the owner not giving a shit/trying to bail, which led to them losing Richards and leaving the future cloudy. Unlike Pheonix, Dallas had always been pretty solid til that ownership mess last year

Jordin Tootoo got two games for bumping into Ryan Miller on a fairly standard cut to the net play where he tried to jump out of the way. I'm going to assume this is because no one wanted to hear Miller of Lindy Ruff whine like big retards anymore because that is a pretty shitty suspension.

Can't suspend the Bruin players anyway, they are untouchable. Tootoo plays for Nashville which is fair game to suspend. Just hope Cooke never gets traded to the Bruins or else he will have free reign to injure people.

I like that the Atlantic stayed together and essentially turned into the old Patrick division. Divisional playoffs produces rivalries, but at the same time, the top 4 in each division getting autoed is ultimately gonna bone someone when a shitty team squeaks in over a team who had more points in a tougher division

Pretty bogus suspention. I feel even the game misconduct he got was overkill. 5min major seemed like an OK call.

Sooo David Booth, why aren't you suspended for doing the EXACT same thing in vancouver the same night? Does this mean Ryan Smyth is gonna get suspended 2 games next time he crashes the net?

I think the realignment is okay, but it really screws the western teams for the playoffs. I would like to be in one of the eastern divisions where 4/7 make the playoffs instead of 4/8. In order to make it fair(in that aspect) they will have to add two more teams or more realistically contract two teams. I also like the fact there are a lot of rivalry scenarios that can happen in the first round.

I'd like it if only the top 3 in each division were guaranteed playoffs and the last 4 were wildcards.
