It's the media narrative and a heightened awareness. I should find it again, but I remember when the headshot rule first came into play I found an article that sourced a study and basically it was roughly 80 a year or so. Quarter through, it's roughly on pace especially when you count take off Savard, Staal, Sid, who all had them last year. Also, the headshot thing still wouldn't make much a dent in this thing. A majority of concussions happen like how they did on the Sauer hit—player gets blown up clean and smacks his head on the ice (or boards and ice as he did). Staal's was the same. Gerbe's was a board. Many were just freak or odd accidents. McDonald got punched by his own teammate. Giroux hit by his teammate. Pronger got a stick to the face. I'm sure Bouchard lands on here as well soon, and that wasn't a headshot either and happened because he turned at the last second. Stuff like what Fistric did to Nino was dumb because he lept into the thing and that should be a suspension every time. But something like what Pax did to Letang is already ridiculous that he got suspended for that. That was no different than when Campoli got his shit ruined early in the season by Malone because he skated into trouble and put his head down like a moron. The rule as is at least makes the skater somewhat responsible. Doing a total ban would take that away entirely and lead to a lot of stupid and ultimately unavoidable suspensions because some hits it will happen no matter what. | ||
