FFX is one of the easier FF games if the player takes the substitute all characters in for experience.

I think Xenogears was my favorite JRPG of all time... well apart from the second disk *shudders*.

Mine too! I don't see why so many people don't like the second disc though. I understand it was cut short and rushed but I never had a problem with it!

Played all of them apart from the mmos and XIII/2.
Have to say I've agonized ritually over whether my favorite is 4, 6, or 9...

I did that and grinded for about an hour in each new area. >.> I pretty much skated from attacking Bevelle all the way up to inside Sin, then leveled up a bit in the Omega Ruins. Easy peasy!
However, I'm not ashamed to admit I had a few unlucky fights with Braska's Final Aeon. The first fight he was one hit away from falling and somehow took out Yuna and Tidus and petrified Auron. The second fight I wasn't paying attention and used Holy instead of sacrificing an aeon for a late overdrive. The third fight was probably the easiest Jecht fight I've ever had, since I gave Yuna double-cast and thundaga and had her target the statues the whole fight. Didn't even have to sac an aeon that time!
I fucking love FFX. It's just pleasing in every single way. Beautiful to look at, amazing soundtrack, wonderful story, great symbolism--I mean, when you realize that Yu Yevon is this tiny little parasite inside this monstrous shell it's such a powerful moment. Also, all of the Bevelle Fayth's dialogue was excellent: "Now he exists only to summon. He is neither good nor evil." I understand and sympathize with the detractors. Some of the character interaction is cheesy, Tidus is whiny (he's 17 and it's at least partially justified), Wakka was annoying (not for me, but whatever), etc. Those are such minor complaints though.
Has anyone noticed how colorful this game is? I never realized it as a kid but compared to most modern games FFX is absolutely vibrant.
I do have one question, and maybe it's just a plot hole: Where did Sin originally come from? I know there was a war between Zanarkand and Bevelle, and that Yunalesca sacrificed Zaon to defeat Sin, but where does Yu Yevon fit into that time line? Was Yu Yevon a desperate summoner willing to do anything to save Zanarkand? Did he create Sin? If so, from what?
Edit: I guess this is why (taken from FFwiki): + Show Spoiler +One thousand years before the events of Final Fantasy X, Yu Yevon was the leader of Zanarkand and an extremely powerful summoner, peerless in his might. Zanarkand was at war with Bevelle, a strong military power which used mechanical technology to build weapons (Zanarkand's machines were used solely to power the city). Unwilling to let Zanarkand die in defeat, Yu Yevon had all the surviving citizens turn themselves into Fayth and began a massive group summoning of the city, one that never slept. In order to protect himself, he gathered a multitude of pyreflies and transformed them into an armor which became the monster, Sin.
Yu Yevon gave this creature a set of very simple instructions: destroy any machina or settlement which grew larger than a small village in order to bring technical evolution to a halt, and retaliate to all hostility with extreme prejudice. However, the strain on summoning both Sin and maintaining his beloved Dream Zanarkand proved too much, even for his abilities. His humanity soon faded and Sin was left as a force relying solely on instinct and to comply with the instructions given to it upon creation. Sin's first act as such was to destroy the real Zanarkand. The armies of Bevelle saw this destruction and retreated, bringing the first news of the great monster. According to the Fayth who continuously summon Dream Zanarkand, Yu Yevon is neither good nor evil. His existence only has one purpose; to summon his armor known as Sin, which is why he is drawn to the Final Aeon when his former armor has been destroyed, and to maintain Dream Zanarkand.
Shortly before creating Sin, Yu Yevon informed Yunalesca of his plan and gave her a means of calming the creature. Yunalesca passed this knowledge on to the leaders of Bevelle, thus beginning the teachings of Yevon and the endless spiral of death that surrounds Spira.
Anyways, enough gushing.

Something I just realized: replaying FFX has just reminded me how badly FFX-2 handled the story and Yuna's character in particular.
She was a very strong, driven, willful person, and then all of a sudden turned into an oversexed heartbroken wimp searching for her long lost white knight. Like, give me a break. I don't hate FFX-2 like most people (I said as much in my OP), but I feel that any emotion I attached to the sequel is directly attributed to my love of FFX, not the game itself. It's interesting that three very strong female characters were either stuffed into bikinis or made pregnant or suddenly got weaker. Now, if Spira had some kind of sexual revolution with the fall of Yevon, that I could understand, but it's never explicitly stated that did in fact happen, and so the bikini falls from a point of strength to a point of objectification, basically. It's not like Yuna decided to strut her stuff because she's proud to be a woman--in fact, she's not even strutting her stuff to even attract anyone. The skirt and cleavage is there for the player and the player only. I think that's the main thing I have a problem with. I mean, to fifteen year old me that was PG-rated heaven, but in hindsight I can't for the life of me remember anything about FFX-2 but the ending, and I think I completed like 80% of that game with the help of a walkthrough.
In summary: the whole sexualization of Yuna and Rikku could have meant something if it were in the context of some Spira-wide post-Yevon social revolution, but instead it comes across as a sleazy marketing ploy. Also, I don't think Cid would let his niece and daughter run around like that, just sayin'.

It's because of the MASSIVE contrast between disk one and two. Disk one is just fucking flat out some of the best JRPG gaming EVER. As a result, the second disk does nothing but disappoint because you can't help but feel how much better it would have been had Square been allowed the time and money to create exactly what they'd set out to.

I'm currently attempting a FFIX Excalibur II perfect game run on my PSP, this is going to be hell since I can't skip FMVs. I have found that exploiting the PSP menu makes pleasing the 1000 nobles impossible to screw up :D

The Final Fantasy 7 PC re-release was just launched.
http://finalfantasyviipc.com/en
If you haven't played it yet, here's your chance. Right now it's on a special limited time launch discount that saves you about $2 or so from regular price.
Over the original game it only adds cloud saves, 36 achievements, and a character booster that allows you to instantly boost HP, MP, and Gil up to max. In other words, it looks like it's not significantly different than the original.
I already beat it about 5 times back in the day and I have it on emulator but I'm gonna d/l this anyway when I get off work, haha.
Get pumped with Mega Ran's Black Materia FF7 rap album. Can listen to the tracks on this site: http://random.bandcamp.com/album/black-materia-final-fantasy-vii
EDIT: I also read it will have MP3 music instead of the original MIDI. I haven't confirmed it yet but that sounds like a pleasant upgrade if so.

Unfortunately, this is a re-release of the PC-release, which means it has MIDI music rather than the awesome original score from the PS-version, and also that it's got fugly mouths drawn on all characters. Still though, I just had to get it. Even after all these years, it's still got some of the best ambience of all the FFs, and unlike FFX and later trainwrecks, this doesn't feel nearly as linear.

My favorite final boss fight in videogame history:

(OK so it's not a canonical FF game -- but SaGa was a great series and the fact that it was given the FF brand in US helped me discover it early!)

I didn't first notice it until I saw Jesse on the train after the first reactor bombing and she had a silly "O" mouth constantly. It was really weird. But the graphics do seem a lot smoother than I remember, though same style. It's also nice having no load time when jumping into battles.

Holy crap did I love the FF Legend series! It's amazing what an FF brand can do for a game. If it was labeled SaGa I probably wouldn't have even picked it up back in the day. Good thing I did. I ran through those multiple times on road trips and at school.

I had this game as a kid.
It's a weird weird game compared to the other FF series.

It's out! The announced PC remake for FF VII (which is more a slight overhaul to make it perfectly compatible for new hardware than a remake) is now available in the Square Enix online store

I've actually never played any Final fantasy-game, and I've heard mixed feelings on FF7, so I've been thinking about getting FF3 on the Android market. How good is it compared to the others?

Love the Pufftrees stream (as I said in my PM, too!)

Just get FF X and you can't go wrong (just don't touch part 2).
