3 No good official release, use the fan translation NES ROM. Available on DS/iOS/Android, but modified heavily and not quite true to the original.

6 GBA ROM
7. PC Port
8. PC Port (Both PC ports take some fiddling, but PS1 emulators are a bigger pain)
9. Buy the PS1 version
10. Buy it

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for.

You can play 7 8 9 on your PS3 buying them from the PSN.
Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

Yes, 6 and 7, 8, and 9 are on PS3 PSN, soon 10HD will be there as well.
You can also get 5 for Wii shop if that is something you got.
and 7 will soon come to steam on PC!

I'v played them all in the last couple of years, was great!

I'm particularly interested in playing IV and VI because I never got to finish them. I grew up watching my cousin who was a year older and whose parents bought him lots of video games play through those two and enjoyed them vicariously. Have always wanted to finish the games myself though.

Recently purchased and watched Advent Children Complete on BluRay. This version is sooo much better than the original (approx 30 min more footage and some edits to certain scenes), and the extras that basically took you down memory lane for the FFVII universe did a great job of reminding me how great FFVII was and making me curious about trying those games I missed (Crisis Core and Dirge, although I heard they weren't great).

ff7 on playstation emulator(s) works perfectly and easily, tho i couldnt figure out how to increase the game resolution when i done it last (probably was just an emulator option i missed...)

for pc version there are several torrents. i think last time i played i downloaded the pure game (rather than a pre-packaged version) , it worked on my windows 7 iirc, and i could install several community mods such as a "modern character graphics" mod, which was cool for a change, and a "new clouds weapons" mod which sadly didn't work but i didn't bother to investigate it further. there is also a mod for replacing the game music files so they become the orchestral versions.

instructions for installing ff7 are here apprently http://www.finalfantasy7pc.com/mods/

ff9 you can get on playstation emulator...

ff8 works fine on playstation emulator too...you have to enable a Special Option in epsxe (the emulator) in the graphics tab, otherwise battles can lag badly. i havent played PC version (didnt know there was one..) so idk what mods there might be

idk why he says playstation emulators are a bigger pain. they also let you use quicksave and turbo mode (not that i use these myself).

Its been a while, but I always loathed configuring those emulators downloading graphics plugins and BIOS files and whatnot, and then there was still a long list of games that wouldn't work after all that. Maybe it's better now, I don't know, but 7 and 8 at least are much easier to just use the PC version for.
Life is too short to take it seriously.

I've never been a huge FF fan as the gameplay doesn't really appeal to me, but anyone who hasn't played the original Tactics absolutely MUST try it...I must have put close to 1000 hours into that game when I was a kid, sooo many ways to play it and the combat is actually interesting unlike the typical FF game (imo of course)
remember not to think too much and your trip will be numbingly pleasant

Tactics is a classic. You may also enjoy FF12 on PS2 as it takes place in the same universe, and has a war driven plot, and all around is more mature. It also plays much differently from the others.

Do yourself a favor and play through them :D Those two my favorite of the FF series. That might just be nostalgia though. 4 prob takes the prize. It's great because characters are just dying and sacrificing themselves all over the place. You thought Aeris dying was a huge shocker?

The thing about FF 13 is that i actually thought it was visually, one of the best games i have played. The world was interesting and I liked the cast of characters. But I really wanted more. I wanted towns to explore, side quests. I wanted a game I could spend hundreads of hours in getting cool stuff. I wanted to go back to the old FF games in the 90s. 13-2 was ok it did improve some things, but I found it hard to care about why we were running around doing what we are doing. FF 13-3(rumors) should be amazing lol

I played XII once completely 100% through and was satisfied, I didn't even finish XIII.

Now, I'm playing through VIII again :D. I got this strange yearning to play that fucking card game, and now I'm 50+ hours into the game and still on disc 2 lol. Goddamnit I love the old FF series. I'll probably go and play through X or VI after I finish VIII.

Or maybe I'll go dig around for some of the other tactic games, since I heard there were more than the original

Yea man, but as soon you start spreading the "Random" rules it just kills you. If I remember that only really happens on disc 3. I got so many items through Triple Triad, and it wasn't some broken system or anything. So it was a minigame that wasn't just a distraction. Unlike that unintelligible card game from FFIX. Or blitzball's fairly innocuous rewards.

As soon as any rules start spreading its hell. I went mad trying to abolish all the shitty rules from existence. I don't know how anyone can play with rules like plus in existence.

Random doesn't hurt me too bad since I just modify all my shitty or non rare cards to items, then all my cards are still good even on random. "Plus" is a different story, That rule rapes me hard. I actually kind of like elemental rule, makes things a little more interesting. At disc one I was trying to abolish all the shitty rules and spread the good ones like open, but I seriously spent 5 hours trying to abolish random in some places and I decided that it would take me less time to play with shitty rules and win than it would to abolish all the shitty rules.

When you have OCD and trying to collect every single card, random sucks so bad. I ended up spreading it everywhere; I remember dueling someone for several hours to get one of the last cards =/

The playstation 1 emulator is extremely to use. Just use the latest bios file and you can run pretty much any game. PS2/gamecube/xbox on the other hand are extremely difficult to get to work correctly.

I didn't mind the Plus rule, the wall rules really got my goat, but I was lucky not to spread them. In my first play through, Open spread like wildfire, which is fine if you get good enough cards in Disc 1 (Ifrit and Seifer ftw!)

Crisis core is great, but it's an action RPG, so it's not like other FF games. Anyway it's an amazing game, I'd recommend trying it.

What did people like about FFVIII? i can only name the intro and the card game. laguna was cool-ish but not memorable. Everything about that game was just disappointment for me.

but people mentioning Aeris in FFVII isn't exactly fair there are far more moments in the game that speak to the greatness of FFVII. There were tons of moments which could/should have created a deep emotional impact for you including:

+ Show Spoiler +
Cait Sith's self sacrifice at the temple of the ancients
Aeris's Death at the hands of sephiroth
Red XIII learning the truth about his father
Deans Death
The story of Correl
Vincent's storyline
Burning of Nibelheim
Cid's Storyline
Biggs wedge and jessie's death
Aeris' mother's past

Hell some of this just the music will bring back the emotions.
Go on grooveshark and listen to aeris' theme, The Great Warrior, Cid's Theme and tell me you don't feel something. That's good storytelling and an amazing soundtrack at work

I don't know what it is about VIII, but when I think about it I feel pretty nostalgic and it makes me happy. I don't think it was particularly a classic FF in any sense, but I enjoyed the story. Squall being a whiny poon didn't really bother me. Granted the last third of the game had some serious problems and the junction system didn't really do it for me. I think I have such fond memories for it because of the atmosphere, music and story, combined with the fact that I built an entire website dedicated to FFVIII called "Balamb Garden" as my first real non-geocities, pure notepad coded HTML site by myself.

Good times. Won't touch that game with a 10 foot pole now so I don't ruin good memories. I still have the hard drive with my original materials for the site. I hosted it again with DDNS on a server I have in my house a few years back. I'll put it up again every once in a while to feel nostalgic and link all my friends to it for the lulz. I was such a noob about it too, the HTML was decent, but I made images of every character/locale/GF in BMP and overlaid the text description on it as well. My site was freaking FAT. GG dial-up.
This is well below quality expected of a post in any forum. -Empyrean

Crisis core is great, but it's an action RPG, so it's not like other FF games. Anyway it's an amazing game, I'd recommend trying it.

I didn't really like any of the compilation of FFVII games personally. My main issue is all the incredibly tacked-on stories. Are we really supposed to believe that Genesis and Angeal were a real part of the story? They were so obviously made up just for Crisis Core. I never felt like I gained any deeper insight into the events of FFVII and so it made the entire thing seem like a big money-grab. A proper prequel would be more along the lines of Metal Gear Solid 3 which fed perfectly into everything that happened in 1 and 2.

And the gameplay in Crisis Core was awful. X X X MAX HP MAX HP X MAX HP X X INFINITE AP X X X X X X LIMIT BREAK X X X X X X X X random overpowered skill.

There was literally no decision-making to be made in battle since everything was randomized, and there was little fun to be had exploring that copy-pasted wasteland of a world.

I actually thought the gambit system was pretty unique and cool. It was the perfect game to play while you sit and drink a beer. I do prefer story/gameplay over graphics, and XII was the opposite, but it was still fun to play through. I was much less disappointed with XII than XIII.

I didn't mind the Plus rule, the wall rules really got my goat, but I was lucky not to spread them. In my first play through, Open spread like wildfire, which is fine if you get good enough cards in Disc 1 (Ifrit and Seifer ftw!)

I mean, I could play with the plus rule, but then I'd have to work my way through like 50 different scenarios on paper to figure out what move to make and by that point I'm having even less fun than I had abolishing that piece of shit.

FFVIII certainly was a disappointment compared to FFVII, but it was a decent game. I enjoyed the fact that the majority of it was less of a big save the world theme but a more intimate interpersonal story, though it did jump the shark once you got to Esther. Personally I loved all the Laguna sequences and would totally play and love the shit out of a game that was purely about him. I also enjoyed the school setting in the gardens and enjoyed the characters interactions and quirks. I think it was a very easy to relate to scenario that hit home with a lot of people.
Life is too short to take it seriously.
