I finally went back and completed FFX-2 a few months back. Wasn't bad at all, but I thought the ending was too abrupt and that the nicely constructed plot wasn't used nearly as well as it should've been.

Right now I'm finally going back and playing FFIV for the first time (the Nintendo DS re-release, on my computer via emulator lolol, I find that comical.)

Having not played a Final Fantasy in about 2 years I've become really reminiscent over them recently.

Initially, and in my heart, I loved FF VII. There was never a dispute. It was the second FF I ever played and a game that I spent COUNTLESS hours into. I, in turn, made a couple of my friends spend countless hours playing the game. I beat the game, 100%. Ruby and Emerald weapon got beaten as well as the Gold Saucer's Arena. It was beautiful, no doubt. Remember the cinematics? Remember all the conspiracy/brainstorming that went on around particular characters (Hi Zack!). It was incredible. I'm also assuming that when I voted in this poll initially I voted for FF VII.

However....

I firmly believe FFX is the best game in the series. The love story between Tidus and Yuna, the struggle between father and son and the eternal love and trust between friends are just a few of the beauties of the game. Not to mention the absolute visual orgasm offered in the cutscenes (I have to say, FF X-2 had amazing cutscenes too, albeit nothing else). Then there's the soundtrack.

Your hero's have suffered through all the strife and problems in Spira and they've finally made it to Zanarkand. Tidus sees it all with his own eyes. I believe this is also the team he finds Yuna's sphere-thing? It's heart-wrenching. But the hero's continue on, they pull together and they encourage each other forward.

I don't know what it is but I just can't get enough of that soundtrack. I just love it. to be fair, there weren't many bad pieces of music in the OST for the game at all but this is the one that stands out for me above all the rest.

I could go on forever about the game, I could probably write a blog but probably never will.

For me, FFX is greater than FF VII. It just has more stand out points. I'm that little bit older now and I haven't played a FF in a couple years. I've looked back on them and thought... yeah, that game was incredible. Which game would I start someone on for a Final Fantasy? To this day I can't answer that. For me, I started out with VI. I them moved on to VII. Then I played IV, followed by VIII (which I hated) and then moved on to IX (which definitely doesn't get the credit it deserved!) followed by Tactics, III and then X. I've played X-2, XI and XII. Which one to point the finger to for a newbie; there's no way I could answer that. The obvious answers are more towards which ones NOT to play -- Tactics (difficulty), X-2 (duh) & Dirge of Cerberus. It's too much of an immersive world, no matter what, to just suggest one. Give 'em all a go I say.

As Yuna says herself:

I want my journey to be full of laughter.

I loved FFX as well, but I still prefer VII. The thing is FFX was amazing on the first playthrough, every twist blew my mind and discovering the way Spira worked was absolutely incredible, especially when you found out how things REALLY worked.

However it's so much more... blatant than FFVII. On the second playthrough nothing really changes, all the significant plot points are much more in your face.

FFVII has so much more subtlety and so much more going on in the background, you're mislead more than in FFX and on much deeper levels, to the point of not even trusting the character you control. FFVII was the game I played once and then went back to years later and got more out of it the second time because there was so much that didn't happen right in front of you, but was alluded to or seen only partially in flashbacks which often times turned out to be wrong. There were also things that happened early on and forgotten and then explained by later events so when you play it a second time you're like "holy shit that makes so much more sense now"

I agree with IRL, I believe the story is richer and deeper in FF10. Also the twist at the end? It was much deeper imo and much better and the game is much easier to get into. FF7 starts off really really slow but if you hang on to the ride, it actually was pretty good. I love the side quest they were interesting and showed more depth between the characters (vincent wife, Yuffie ninja village) and the mystery of wtf cloud was, was pretty interesting.

What really won be over was how FF10 ended. The ending was damn good and was rather unexpected. While FF7 ending was.....really weak lol. It was cool being able to omni slash sepheroth but then shit collapse and they just flew away. I didnt feel anything when the game ended. Remember how it felt when you first saw Aeris died? Remember how it felt when you beat the game? The death of aeris was definitely more memorable then the ending and it is what I think made the game good. When people talk about FF7, they generally talk about Aeris death more than the ending.

Compare to FF10, + Show Spoiler +
they killed Tidus father, all the aeon, and then Yevon. Then find out that Tidus was already dead (I didnt even like Tidus)?! I think that was a pretty big shock that no one really saw coming. To me, I think FF10 ending much deeper and I was able to comprehand the emotion and what was going on and the sound track was damn good and fitted the theme extremely well. ALso the blitz ball was probably the best minigame in any RPG once you understand it.
(I added spoilers cause someone here posted above that they will be playing through FFX)

Part of me think that the reason people think FF7 is good was just due to nostalgia. I played 10 first and it could just me being bias but imo, I also think that FF6 is better then FF7. Of course we are all entitled to our opinion and this is simply just my opinion.

What really captivated me about 7 was the sheer depth that they put into the storyline. Every character had a part where they were really the center of attention and so it really made you feel for all of them equally. Even characters you might consider "minor" like Yuffie and RedXIII had huge portions of quests and stories with treasure, flashy magic rewards and of course new areas with gorgeous (at the time) graphics to display each person's plight.

When you ask the general public, they might mention Aeris's death more than anything but for me that just wasn't the case. I felt for each character. No matter how minor, they were given hours of playtime and storylines all their own. No other FF really did that. There were always minor characters that receive little to no attention and are just sort of "there".

Also the large playtime you could put into FFVII really got me. If you wanted multiples of all the master materia + weapon kills + all sidequests + limit breaks (especially aeris's before her death) + bonus bosses, it was well over a hundred hours if it was your first time. Even trying to speed through it, it takes me over 60 hours of playtime to get absolutely everything.

As many times as I've played it, it never loses its edge. I never once wasn't fully captivated from the beginning in Midgar which was so big in and of itself that it felt like that was the whole world... and then you got outside and realized there was so much more. The global scare of the weapons was fantastic and something they only really rivaled with Sin in FFX. That element alone made you really feel for them. Threats were everywhere. Whether it was Sephiroth about to rain hell from the skies and slaughter every living being on the planet or the weapons tearing through humans for devastating the planet, there was always tension around the world while all these intricate storylines were going on.

7 wasn't my first FF, but it is still my favorite.

Imo a lot of the praise for FF7 come also from the fact it was the first episode with great cinematics and in 3D (while also being great of course !). It's also the first episode that has been translated in European languages I think (and even though now I dont care playing a game in english, when I was 12 that is a different story) so a lot of people started to know the game with this episode.

If they rerelease FF7 on PC and make it a bit smoother and faster (for fps) I might rebuy it.
Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

I'll agree FFX had a better ending, but I also think FFVII's ending or rather the end of FFVII is severely underrated. I'm not talking about going into the crater though, I'm talking about just before. Much of what made the "end" of FFX so great was between arriving at Zanarkand and the actual ending sequence. If you just look at the crater its a bit of an unfair comparison.

In FFVII you were presented with a huge chunk of things to do between the return to Midgar and the crater and it sort of broke up the story a lot. If you take FFVII from the point where Tifa and Cloud piece back their memories to the end it's a much better comparison. That sequence is easily one of my favorites in videogame history, more so than Aeris dying which was great purely for its shock, the memory sequence was extremely well-written and forced you to completely rethink one of the key relationships in the game and finally gave you a peace of mind. It was really more about a thoughtful resolution than introducing further twists. FFVII liked to mess with you all the way through, whereas FFX did it to a lesser extent early on but hit you hard at the very end.

Everyone's story really came full circle in the sequence where they decided to take some time off before going into the crater. The game tied up all of its loose ends except for Sephiroth, Holy and Meteor and I thought the all had very good, satisfying conclusions.

But then, there were all the sidequests in the way before the actual ending which watered things down a lot. I think if you just skip them and take care of Sephiroth it's actually a very good end to the game.

And I don't think its really right to write off peoples love of the game as nostalgia. The game needs to be considered within the context of the time it was released. At the time the best storylines in games were games like Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2. Both were good games, but the storylines were far from what came in the Playstation era, Metal Gear Solid had only just come out. I remember at the time I still heralded Diablo's ending where the warrior puts Diablo's soulstone in his head as the best ending ever. FFVII was revolutionary at its time for transitioning RPGs into 3D and creating a much more captivating and non-cliche'd story than anyone had seen before. And yes, the visuals were amazing at the time although now it is tough to look at a bunch of amputee sprites running around.

What's the best way to get a copy of the entire FF series with a PS3 and/or PC? This thread has reawakened my nostalgia and I feel like spending some weekends replaying some of my old favorites and some that I never really got through.

"Try FF13!
It has amazing graphics!"
Who cares about that?

In terms of gameplay,
Tactics really was the best.
What even comes close?
A build is not a guess, an estimation or a hunch, a feeling, or a foolish intuition. A build is a dependable, unwavering, unarguably accurate, portrayer of your ambition.

Well, I'll tell you straight up that older PlayStation games won't work on newer PS3s. I forget the actual model / hard drive size that's compatible, but it's on Wikipedia.

Your best bet is to find an old PlayStation 2 for cheap and nab the older Final Fantasies from a Play 'n Trade. You could also use an emulator, or play the remakes if you own a Gameboy.
If you can't jam with the best, then you have to slam with the rest.

1&2 Dawn of Souls on GBA Emulator
3 No good official release, use the fan translation NES ROM. Available on DS/iOS/Android, but modified heavily and not quite true to the original.
4 GBA ROM (Better translation than SNES)
5 GBA ROM
6 GBA ROM
7. PC Port
8. PC Port (Both PC ports take some fiddling, but PS1 emulators are a bigger pain)
9. Buy the PS1 version

What's the best way to get a copy of the entire FF series with a PS3 and/or PC? This thread has reawakened my nostalgia and I feel like spending some weekends replaying some of my old favorites and some that I never really got through.

1&2 Dawn of Souls on GBA Emulator
3 No good official release, use the fan translation NES ROM. Available on DS/iOS/Android, but modified heavily and not quite true to the original.
4 GBA ROM (Better translation than SNES)
5 GBA ROM
6 GBA ROM
7. PC Port
8. PC Port (Both PC ports take some fiddling, but PS1 emulators are a bigger pain)
9. Buy the PS1 version
10. Buy it
11+ Who cares?

Problem with XII?

I'd really rather not create such a wall of text, but honestly everything about that game is awful, I can't name a single thing I liked, the characters, the story, the music, the gameplay, the ridiculous license and gambit systems, the horrible dialogue and voideovers, I hated all of it.

So, so glad I never played it.

I actually thought the gambit system was pretty unique and cool. It was the perfect game to play while you sit and drink a beer. I do prefer story/gameplay over graphics, and XII was the opposite, but it was still fun to play through. I was much less disappointed with XII than XIII. I played XII once completely 100% through and was satisfied, I didn't even finish XIII.

Now, I'm playing through VIII again :D. I got this strange yearning to play that fucking card game, and now I'm 50+ hours into the game and still on disc 2 lol. Goddamnit I love the old FF series. I'll probably go and play through X or VI after I finish VIII.

Or maybe I'll go dig around for some of the other tactic games, since I heard there were more than the original

The new translation for VI on GBA was nice, but the SNES soundtrack didn't sound half as awesome coming through GBA hardware. I can't recommend the ports over the original.

Yea man, but as soon you start spreading the "Random" rules it just kills you. If I remember that only really happens on disc 3. I got so many items through Triple Triad, and it wasn't some broken system or anything. So it was a minigame that wasn't just a distraction. Unlike that unintelligible card game from FFIX. Or blitzball's fairly innocuous rewards.

As soon as any rules start spreading its hell. I went mad trying to abolish all the shitty rules from existence. I don't know how anyone can play with rules like plus in existence.

Triple Triad is a ridiculous power boost with the card converter. Completly worth the time. 100 tornado on str-junction for your seed test + thundaga on element-j. Spider Robot says Bye-Bye in a few hits xD

ff7 on playstation emulator(s) works perfectly and easily, tho i couldnt figure out how to increase the game resolution when i done it last (probably was just an emulator option i missed...)

for pc version there are several torrents. i think last time i played i downloaded the pure game (rather than a pre-packaged version) , it worked on my windows 7 iirc, and i could install several community mods such as a "modern character graphics" mod, which was cool for a change, and a "new clouds weapons" mod which sadly didn't work but i didn't bother to investigate it further. there is also a mod for replacing the game music files so they become the orchestral versions.

instructions for installing ff7 are here apprently http://www.finalfantasy7pc.com/mods/
list of mods - http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Technical/Customising
eg
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12522.msg184501#msg184501

ff9 you can get on playstation emulator...

ff8 works fine on playstation emulator too...you have to enable a Special Option in epsxe (the emulator) in the graphics tab, otherwise battles can lag badly. i havent played PC version (didnt know there was one..) so idk what mods there might be

idk why he says playstation emulators are a bigger pain. they also let you use quicksave and turbo mode (not that i use these myself).
