Is it the same as the original? What's the story about? It's a step down in terms of polish, but it's a enjoyable little RPG nonetheless. Just a lot of fun exploring environments from the last game, and collecting monsters to fight with you, along with treasure hunting that all makes for a good time. Sarah and Noel are fun characters but the story was very nonsensical, and overall pretty insulting to what XIII stood for (kind of like X-2did, depending on who you ask). They ruined Lightning, she just kind of chimes in with sappy monologues after every cutscene. It was very nauseating. Also, the 25 hour campaign is painfully easy. I really missed the difficulty spikes and more interesting battles from XIII after playing XIII-2. You can literally sit on Com/Rav/Rav the entire game, aside from a pretty challenging ending string of boss fights. Soundtrack is a noticeable step down too, but still plenty of gems to be heard. But the Mass Effect N7 costumes are fantastic ^_^. My entire review is the OP of the official thread, if you're looking for more depth. That would better explain what the game and story are about.

Sorry for the late reply, I completely forgot about this! I'll read your review and comment later. It's not a remake, but I wouldn't mind just replaying an updated version anyway. The graphics have aged pretty poorly just because it lacks the charm PS1 games have even though they're technically inferior. I picked up a cheap copy of FFX a few days ago, and it just reaffirmed my choice for "best FF ever." Everything's colorful and vibrant and the story is amazing despite some childish antics from Tidus. I'm a bit confused though, and maybe it's because when I was younger I didn't question or notice this, but (and I'll spoiler it just in case): + Show Spoiler + Okay, so Tidus is a dream, right? Is he Jecht's dream? How does that work? Was Zanarkand destroyed the same day Jecht disappeared and Tidus / the city just lived on in his memory? Where does the Fayth play into that?

Where does the Fayth play into that? + Show Spoiler + He was a dream of the Fayth as is Zanarkand, man it's been too long since I played it but I remember that confrontation scene on Mount Gagazet where the group walk past a massive wall of sleeping Fayth. Zanarkand was destroyed in the great Machina War as the Zanarkadian Summoners could not defend it and in order to preserve it's memory, became Fayth. I believe Sin was also created around this time because of the original sacrifice by Yunalesca and her squeeze (name escapes me) to YuYevon. The Fayths plan was to extract potential saviours of Spira from Dream-Zanarkand (such as Jecht and Tidus) Something like that anyway

The Fayths plan was to extract potential saviours of Spira from Dream-Zanarkand (such as Jecht and Tidus) Something like that anyway + Show Spoiler + Alright, so looking it up, this is what I found: Zanarkand was a real city that was really destroyed by Sin a thousand years ago after the machina war. The people who died in Zanarkand became the Fayth, sustained by the life force of Yu Yevon. These Fayth dream of Zanarkand as a one city world. Jecht was somehow transported to Spira (I have no idea how) and learns of all this. When Jecht becomes Sin, he sends Auron back to the dream world to watch over Tidus, and later transports them both back to Spira so they can break the cycle. Tidus and Jecht are made up of the memories of people who actually lived in Zanarkand, but weren't real autonomous people until they arrived in Spira outside of Yu Yevon's influence. Once Yu Yevon was destroyed, the cycle was broken and the energies sustaining the Fayth and their dreams was severed. I also found something odd: apparently, in the lore of the game, Yuna is rumored to be the apparition of a water goddess born to defeat the lord of fire + Show Spoiler + (I.E. Braska's Final Aeon)

Anyway, I was probably in the 4th grade when I first played FF1. The N64 was already out, but damnit I loved my old NES and FF1 was just awesome. It did SO much for an NES game; I actually think it has the best atmosphere of any of the games. It feels so much darker and more western than any of the other games. I've enjoyed most of the other ones, but they never really recaptured that feeling. The FF series really went in a much more Japanese or anime direction after that.

EDIT: I can't even stress enough how much of a masterpiece this game was. It's like a work of art, it's perfect in almost every way. If you want the ultimate experience, play through without grinding and without using any of the broken characters (like Orlandu for example). If you haven't played this game, just do it. It has aged very well and always will be a fucking masterpiece.

I haven't had much motivation to play Final Fantasy recently, and when I did, I quit because I didn't know what to name my characters (almost the same problem with Skyrim). Maybe I'll name them all after members of TeamLiquid? Hmm... I'm glad I found this thread. I haven't felt so excited about Final Fantasy in awhile.
