Wow man, man props. I started a low-level game a few months back. Got to the crane boss before losing interest. Might pick it up again.

So. I've been playing FF7. I have played it countless times before but never really got that far. I'm at the latest disc now but I've lost all desire to keep playing. I just hated where the story went after Cloud went apeshit. Am I the only one that feels this way? I feel like this game takes itself too seriously, unlike the other JRPGs I like.

To the ff8 hatred out there... There are a few points I want to make as to why us 8 lovers love this title as much as we do. (note SeeD in my name.)

First, there was a point about how summons were the only way to deal enough damage. Not even kind of true. You need to draw magic and allocate it into appropriate status slots. You could really make your characters very customizable. Anyone could be a mage (some better than others) or a warrior.

Second, I admit, the game should have ended on disc 3. Disc 4's story felt forced. But the reason many of us love the game is character dynamic and overall depth. Every character in 8 had an amazing story and changed realistically and dramatically through the game. The story is amazing, yes, but it's really the characters that make this title as beautiful as it is.

Disc 1 WAS slow. The leveling/draw system is a bit difficult to understand and it's easy to fall into GF mode and never learn to use magic allocation. This makes the game somewhat difficult to get into.

I feel 100% that FF8 was just as good as FF7. 8's character depth rivals 7's story depth, while the opposites are also both good, but lacking in comparison to their counterpart.

I didn't finnish FF8. I think I got too disc 4, but I can't really remember, it was a while ago. I liked the story and characters and all that but I absolutely hated the battle system. That's what killed the game for me. Seeing the same GF animation over and over again. Draw grinding for hours to get enough powerful magic to equip etc. Meh.

@ Belano
Yeah, early game drawing was stupid, but as the game progressed into mid disc1 and forward, you found enough on the ground to keep your characters up to par. Having to actually draw off monsters is either a) a last resort if you can't beat a boss and need to be stronger. b) they have some super rare magic that you just NEED. c) you're casting spells that you're also allocating so you need to draw once every 2-3 spell casts.

FF8 was really, really easy even without drawing. Honestly just using Refine abilities throughout the entire game will let you breeze through the game.

But the cast of FF8 was REALLY good. I actually liked the setting with the Gardens and GFs. Still has the best intro (overture) of any FF game to date.

Zell, Quistis, Selphie, and Irvine hardly existed in FF8, so let's not paint the entire cast with such praise.

Personally I thought FF8 was masterful in the first half and then it kind of went off the deep end, Squall came out too suddenly and was like he was reciting shakespeare, and then the game just decides to tell you "oh, you didn't know shit comes down from the moon to attack earth every so often? yeah, it just happens."

i liked the junction system, but as with all PS1 FFs, the dungeon/battle segments have aged poorly in the pacing department. i could hardly bring myself to replay any of them completely. the PS2 games and on are much better designed, i think.

i agree with you that all the cast are hardly existed, HOWEVER, it was all to concentrate on the main protagornist, squall. If you look into the game deep enough, the whole game is actually all about squall and his relationship with other people, you can even relate the final boss and her true intention to Squall. So i don't really care about other stuff that happened since it is just there to bring along the story. I'll talk about that in more detail in my analyzis of all released final fantasy that i'm currently working on because it is just crazy to think that there's so many thing i (and most people) have missed out in the story during the first playthrough and that what caused many people to quickly misjudge the game to be bad. i personally think FFVIII and FFIX is the closest to the level of "art". FFVII was GREAT but it is just another dagger that thrown at the general consumer, flashy and epic yet still unsatisfying.

Thank you for renewing my faith in FF8, i must not have grasped how to junction magic yet, as i couldnt get more then 40-50 damage from weapons where i would get 500+ with GF's. Kinda made me, lol wut?! this is final fantasy?! -_-.

Guess i was wrong! time to go back and learn it properly and enjoy it ! :-)

Also, the storyline is very gripping for me, if i played it at release i would have for sure played through it regardless of my gf stigma (basically not learning it properly lol.) but nowadays, im sitting here playing skyrim, bf3, SC2, ff13 and you kinda think...eurgh, should i?

I rented FF8 when i was like 10, i got to the first mission where your up the top of that tower, it froze on the cutscene and never loaded, i took it back, they didnt have a replacement, i spent YEARS afterwards wondering. It lived up to its hype for me when i finally got it on PS3 :-D

for the record, i'm currently playing FF6 again just for the sake of reviewing it, and i still enjoy it (less than the first playthrough ofc). The first playthrough is always the best for most of the storyline oriented games like final fantasy. However, FF8 is one of those games that the more you understand it, the more you grow to appreciate it.

FF8 is the best FF. I have no other input :p

Seriously, FF games are all about how much you like the characters, the universe, etc. Some people just won't get into it that much. I made peace with the fact that some people will never like FF8, and stopped trying to convince them. I just think it's sad for them to not be able to enjoy this great game.

FF6 battle system was so great because they was so much variety in character skills. I mean once you start getting espers you can grind anyone to be a good mage, but realistically, you dont have to resort to that. Of course, most characters cant match 1 mp ultima spam, but they can hold their own even without magic.

Now look at FF7. EVERY character is the same save for their limit breaks. FF8 is the same story with junctions.

I'm playing through Final fantasy tactics on the PSP again, and I'm amazed once again at the storyline/writing in it. I really love the way the characters converse, it's probably my favorite FF game in regards to story.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

1) i started plpaying it again recently. i HATED it when i first played it (tho i done the end sequence like 7 times in 2 days and cried like a baby), it really made no sense to me and i didnt like anything except the card game (forgot how to play it now lol).

but someone on tlnet made a post/link about an alternative explanation of ff8 is that squall actually dies (or gets fucked up) at the middle? of disc 1 and everything else in the whole game is kinda in his mind, like a dream. this made me wanna play it again with this new perception, i am like "okay , anything goes, i can relate to that!"

2) im playing on emulator so i can turbo-mode battles/GFs, no biggie. (tho i get massive random slowdown using emulator, maybe my shitty laptop overheats? idk)

3) idk what i wanna say, basically saying after coming back to it after a few years i dont find it so shitty anymore (tho i am still at the start of the game so we will see haha!)

FFVIII was the first RPG game I had ever played and since then I've seen/played most of them and VIII is still my fave. I didn't know what I was doing, and by Disc 3, I was way too weak, because I didn't know you were supposed to do side quests etc lol My data was corrupt, and I tried replaying a few times, just haven't had time, I don't even know how the game ends lol Card game is the best thing ever.

Watched my friends play X, VI and VII, don't know that I'd play them nowadays. It's hard to play through when there is so many secrets, but I don't want to play through with a guide because it's just too easy.

I put in 100hrs in XII, finished all but the last 4-5 hunts then went and beat the game, waaay OP and too easy. Gambit system was meh, fight system was ok, story was....I don't know.

I haven't finished XIII, but I'm just at the part where the game opens to do the side quests, and I did 1 or 2, then the next got stupid hard, I feel like I need to refine the rolls better, if you can't chain, you're effed lol After reading this thread, I am inspired to finish it, I'll get my buddy back on it too I hope, it's hard with SC2, I can't do game balance, if you don't play SC2 everyday, you're falling behind haha The criticism of XIII is legit somewhat, but I'm of the opinion that the story is better in linear fashion. The first time I played VIII, I was like, hmm if this task is so important, why am I off doing side quests, it just doesn't make sense. So the fleeting plot style really made more sense, but you should have had waay more control earlier in the game, replay value seems iffy at best.

VIII > XIII ...... > XII lol

I still think FFX is the best from a pure story and character standpoint, with VIII in a close second. While VIII (and VII and IX) had some odd pacing and what not, I think the character development in X was the best. Aside from Squall and Riona, I haven't cared about a FF character as much as I have the cast from X. Lulu and Wakka didn't get a lot of screen time, but Tidus, as annoying as he can be at times, really shows growth and change as the story goes on, as does Yuna. Plus, Auron is motherfucking Auron.

And while being completely linear with no world map felt kind of sad, I think it helped keep the story on pace. There was never really a point where I thought "Where am I supposed to go? What's going on right now?". You're always clear in your goals and you know how your characters are feeling.

But aside from that, the best Final Fantasy is.... Kingdom Hearts. Yeah. I went there

my only gripe about ffx was the "HA" x 50 part

yea i'll never forget that

if kingdom hearts (or rather the theme song) did anything for me it was that it triggered the "weeaboo middle school" stage of my life.....

Yeah, we all try to forget that....

Other than that, I think the (and I'm about to sound like a teenage girl here) Tidus/Yuna relationship felt... better? more right? than most of the other central couples in other FF games.

But fuck FFX-2. That game sucked so hard.

Meh, the J-Pop intro was live-able, now it just reminds me of how fucking great that series is.
