I still listen to this almost every day while I work If only FF10 wasn't plagued by insanely annoying characters like tidus and fucking wakka, the music and gameplay are so good but the writers just shit all over this game. Not to mention the worst game of all time...blitzball...oh god the horror. Actually tidus was my favourite character... and wakka was funny. Why don't you like blitzball? And why are tidus and wakka annoying? These things are important to mention You like blitzball? But...and...why... ok well we are just gonna have to agree to disagree here. You didn't answer anything

To Hope: I'm sorry I called you a whiny little crybaby. You really toughened up. Please keep buffing Lightning.
To Fang: You're basically an in-house homage to Kain Highwind, but anyone who can tame Bahamut is cool in my book.
To Sazh: You're not a racist caricature. The chicken living in your afro just threw me. Sorry!
To the story: I understand now. The linearity is a comment on the characters themselves; how they're racing toward a fixed fate. You broke up the party so many times because they needed answers. It's cool. I like you.
Nice to hear someone be rational.
boy do I remember the hate FF12 got when it came out, but years later more and more people are coming out and saying it's one of the best.

I played first 7 episodes through at least twice. Tried FF8 for 5-6 hours but didn't really like it. I also tested FF 10,13 and 14 a bit but they were terrible.

Don't have the time to read through everything right now, so just my thoughts on the different Final Fantasies:
FFVII: The one I played first. A really good game, the story is quite obscure, the characters are well done, specially Sephiroth/Jenova. The combat-system is nice, you have much to do and challenging bosses. The music is good, too. Klick
FFVIII: Looking at the poll I think it's highly underrated. For me it comes in together with FFVII, maybe even a little higher. I like most characters a bit better, than the FFVII ones, mainly because I feel, they all get more time of personal description (except Cloud, probably). Again I love the bad boys (girls, this time), the music is great, I sometimes just listen to the soundtrack and instantly get the feeling for the different locations. I like the combat-system and Triple-Triad, although I prefer the magic as it was in FFVII, in FFVIII spells feel more like a better item. In exchange the Guardians are better than the old Summons (don't know their English name), which were a better spell in FFVII. The story is good, too, the bosses are a little weak (specially the weapons, which where no real challenge, like in FFVII - on the other hand, in FFVIII I had quite perfect characters, whereas in FFVII I did only a little stats-morphing while leveling...).
FFIX: An ok game, I guess. The characters and story where a little too "cute" for my taste, although Steiner is quite funny. At the moment I don't even remember the whole story, I didn't like the combat-system much, there just wasn't much to do. I think, I played it 1.5 times, definitely worse than FFVII and FFVIII, but that of course does not make it a bad game, instantly.
FFX: I don't understand, why so many people like this game so much. From the FFs I played, it's the worst. I mean, the good characters are ok, but in no way outstanding. The bad characters are just boring. Play FFVII, fall in love with Sephiroth and then laugh at his blue haired rip-off. It's really sad. The love story between Tidus and I forgot her name is kitschy (hope it's the right word, leo told me to use it) like hell and although the story is quite typical for FFs, you cannot really enjoy it without liking the characters. The combat-system didn't feel real fun, either. Didn't like those skilltrees, it's the same for FFXII - can't really say why.
FFXII: It feels different from the other FFs, you can really see the Vagrant Story (and hear - even just the sounds, the characters make, when moving). The less deciding thing, in my opinion is the combat system, it's more the story and the way the characters speak. The combat system is ok, as I said, I don't like the skill-boards. I haven't finished the game, because, around the time you travel to the east, over this beach, there is suddenly too much to do and the story goes through kind of a slump, so I didn't have the motivation to play further. What I really don't like is this clan-stuff - it seems like a bad attempt to bring the feeling of this stupid online-stuff with achievements etc. to the game, which is totally unnecessary and even hurts the atmosphere of the game. But despite that I kind of like the game, probably even more than FFIX, it's just, that I played FFIX, when I was quite some years younger...the characters are all very well done, kind of realistic in their way of acting...
FFVI: I played it some years ago and remember having fun with it, although I forgot too much, to really write much about it...

FFVII was the game that got me back into gaming. Wish I hadn't played it lol cuz I've been a gaming addict ever since.
I'm disappointed though that you didn't list FFXI, cuz that game was amazingly cool too.
|
I heard some people criticizing FFIX's ability system. In my opinion, it's comparable to FFVII except things are transferable and rare in FFVII whereas in FFIX skills are more redundant and easier to get.
Simply put, in FFIX it is extremely easy to standardize your characters to have a very similar skill set for all characters, whereas in FFVI, due to the amount of time needed to level up each materia, is harder.

I want to raise a topic for discussion.
How powerful/imbalanced is the main male and female (if exists) cast compared to other playable characters in different Final Fantasy games?
For obvious reasons, this exclude certain games such as II, III, and FFTA where all characters can be molded into any shape or form with virtually no differences. FFTA2 might be slightly open for discussion because Adelle's exclusive class is somewhat overpowered.
I feel that an extremely strong, well-rounded main character causes the player to be "lazy" and the game less diverse. It gave players less motivation to develop other characters. On the other hand it does make the game a bit easier to play and more palatable to beginners. I am sort of an anti-main player. I typically enjoy using niched characters and classes more than the main character and cookie-cutter classes. Unfortunately this always always byte my ass later on in the game.
I recall in the NDS version of FFIV, Cecil is incredibly more powerful than rest of the permanent and non-permanent playable characters. He got the highest natural HP growth for as tank, arguably the best physical damage output (I find him greatly outperforming Kain and Edge), and white magic for utility (something that is unfortunately lacked by most other characters). When I play FFIV, and Cecil dies, I am pretty much guaranteed to have a gameover... well, until I gave Rosa a +50% HP Augment.
Another example is wtfimba moment I had was with FFVI and Terra. Because Terra's Trance makes her to do double damage, she pretty much rolls over any bosses. In fact, my strategy for FFVI has pretty much being: 1. keep Terra alive. 2. Terra use Trance. 3. Attack 8 times with Master's Scroll and Genji Gloves. 4. Boss dies in 1-2 turns. The only blessing with FFVI is the last part of the game, which forces me to develop other characters.
Squall from FFVIII is a similar example where the party is very uneven. Squall's Limit Break is significantly better than all other playable characters (perhaps except Rinoa's Angel Wing). In fact, Squall's Limit Break is so good that it's retarded: Squall's Limit Break does at least 8 hits, iirc has a maximum of around 70k. Most other characters Limit Breaks are limited to 9999-30k. This is a big deal since Limit Breaks are so common in FFVIII.
Then there is FFX's Yuna on her standard grid. In fact, just the summoning spells themselves put Yuna in an entirely different class than the other characters; the fact that Yuna's magic is higher than Lulu's on their respective grid is kind of stupid. It would have been better if FFX had different statistics for White and Black Magic (like the Intelligence/Spirituality for FFIV).
Beside the major overpowered characters as mentioned above, I also think Adelle from FFA2 is overpowered due to her exclusive class ability of +1 speed and no equipment restriction.

ff7,8 and 10 were my fav's, i didnt like 9, and X-2 i just got bored of it, but still i love the series and after reading this forum i wanna go back and replay them all again oh and blitzball in 10 i freaking loved, so much so i replayed the game just to put together an awsome team for it

FF4 Cecil was leagues above everyone else. Kain was WAY weaker (but at least could avoid damage with his Jump).
FF7, everyone was pretty similar except for the limitbreaks.. Which iirc was Tifa/Cloud > rest (well Vincent was good somewhere in the middle but sucks in the End... And has an anoying ultimate weapon to "make strong").
FF8, Rinoa in Witch-Mode... I just gave her only the strongest spells (she choses only spells she actually has.. So Ultima/Meltdown/Flare/Meteor/Aura/Wall... ftw...) and she basically just beats the shit out of every boss there was on her own while Squall does Physical-DMG and the 3d Char just supports/heals.
FF10, Yuna delivers.. And her ultimate Weapon wasn't a bitch to "get", unlike Lulu's. Kihmari seemed EXTREMLY terrible. Tidus/Auron were ok.. Couldn't stand Wakka/Strangegirl so i nearly never used them (never made it to "REAL" fighting the dark summons).

My favorite game is FF VII by far, cuz I remember when it came out......and it was freakin incredible for its time.....and I consider it to be one of the best games ever made...
All though its been a while since I played the old FF games. Recently I bought a ps3 and the playstation store FF psx games.....so I will play alot of FF for the time being they have 6-9 (not 100% sure) in the store btw...wish they had some old ps2 games though :/

Wakka was one of the most useful players at the end of the game (Dark aeons/ battle square) because his attack reel overdrive could hit 12 times, producing over a million damage if you are strong enough to do max damage per hit (with break damage limit). Best squad for the normal game was imo Yuna - Summons/mixed mage. On the expert grid you could jump over and get the lvl 2 black magics extremely early, then return to the white mage path which contains much more magic power than the black path. With the increased power, the lvl 2 spells will see you far enough through the game to complete the white mage path and go back to the black (with holy). Wakka - Hits flying enemies and has enough speed to take down enemies that were supposed to be tidus' specialty. His overdrives start off good and just get better, dealing with bosses like nothing else in the game (providing you can play blitzball) and he can throw out status effects. Tidus/Auron - On the standard grid you want auron, his power is unmatched by the other characters. ON the expert these two are pretty interchangable, as Tidus can jump straight onto aurons grid for the attack power, and has much higher speed stats, giving him a higher damage output. Remember though, tidus weapons dont pierce armour, whereas aurons do.

fighting the dark summons).
Was raging when I missed Tidus's ultimate weapon and then went back for it just to have a Dark Bahamut sitting on the way. >.>
Think I got just about all the other Ultimate's. Went with Tidus/Auron/Yuna party all the way, though I didn't go for Dark Summons and beyond those.

I'd say Selphie and Yojimbo technically have the highest damage potential...
As far as actual numbers go, Zell is definitely #1 in FF8. For ffx, Mindy can actually do more damage in a round than Wakka with Passado. You can't control her, though.

I really want to go out and try the older ones (6 and earlier) My top three are; 1. 9 (IX)- The world of nine really appealed to me and i loved the sound track 2. 10 (X)- IDK why but i just really like 10... (until u reach zanarkland then i kinda gave up) 3. Final fantasy tactics- It may not have a number but i really loved this game

The only FF game I've liked is FFX. I cheated the heck out of that game and basically just walked through the story with some random combat, simulating a journey. The cut scenes are great, I like the characters in general. I liked the romance. Especially the scene where they swim in the pond in synchronisation to the Japanese lyrics, got goosebumps there.
FFXIII had all the elements to be good, linearity and a cast with different genders. Sadly they didn't do anything with it, nice cut scenes though. Horrible combat, in a game such as FF I don't want to pay attention in combat or quickly jump through menus. I basically see FF games as something that rewards you for forcing yourself through their combat by allowing you to see cut scenes and nice areas with some fun items.
Other than that I've dropped any other FF game I've tried in the first couple of hours. Heard a lot of good about Tactics though.

I strongly suggest you do, The graphics are outdated but the stories are amazing. 4 and 6 are the best Also play Chrono Trigger if you want another amazing game.
