I believe a lot of people really dislike FFXIII because it's so linear - which is not what the "older" FFs were about; so it's really disappointing when that exploration is gone. Personally, I didn't mind the linearity so much because I just accepted that for this particular game I was playing the story they wanted to tell. I did mind the abhorrent voice acting and saccharine dialogue. FFXIII was so unbelievably emo that I eventually just stopped playing. The characters (and their names!) were ridiculously contrived wihle the story suffered horribly for the way it was told, both in dialogue and vocals - Vanille made me want to murder a puppy.

I loved FFXIII's gameplay and graphics. That's about it hahaha

The story was very bleh, I couldn't really get into it and it didn't draw me in the way VI, VII, IX, and X did (never played 8, really disappointed by 12). Characters were a big part of that. Every character was terribly designed. They were all fucking annoying. I expected Vanille to be the way she was as each FF game generally has a cutesy, annoying-esque little girl character. Sadly enough, her character was the one that matured the most and became most bearable at the end of the game.

FFXII was ^ except even worse and the gameplay and graphics weren't nearly good enough to even begin to make up for the downfalls of the game. Granted, the characters were less rage-inducing, but were very uninspired themselves.

Exactly. Numerous times I asked myself: "Did the writers just look at the story and go, 'huh, you know what? I bet we could fit a couple lines of whining into each and every one of these scenes?'" Even Lost Odyssey didn't come close on the angst meter. And the names. Holy Christ the names. Hope? How about you just call him Cutwrists ffs?

People need to stop hating on Hope, it's nice that you're mature and jaded enough that the loss of your mother will have no affect on you mentally, but that wasn't the case. HE'S A KID, HIS MOM JUST DIED HES GOING TO BE KINDA SAD, let's not forget that he thinks that his Dad has abandoned him, seriously people won't cut him some slack.

let me further explain that he has NO ONE he knows or trusts and the closest person he had to reply on is some eccentric hyper girl (named after an ice cream flavor) who's actually some crazy reincarted "enemy of humanity" and all that. Seriously compared to everyone else and their ridiculous angst he at least has a pretty good reason.

Now don't get me wrong this game definetly was not GOOD I just wanted to put a stop to all this hating on Hope the kid has it pretty rough, and he does eventually man up. Considering that he's in his early teens and is now fighting for his life with only a boomerang on a string or some shit, that's some crazy stuff right there.

Altough I love ff8, I dont think it could ever be the best ff made, even if it was for the single reason that you have to stay low level the whole game and then after you have "beaten" the game you can start leveling.

I would much rather compare 7 and 6, 6 is probably the most underated ff made. personally I think there just arnt to many people that played this ff6 ... such a pitty

No, it doesn't (except triple traid) .

Where is the Gold Saucer in FF8?
The Weapons in FF7 were superior, in FF8 you got one weak one and one uber tough one, the 2(3) in FF7 seemed way better designed.
The Drawing system while nice in theory, was just a grind... Oh, a knew enemy wit a knew spell... Lets Draw for 10 Minutes until everyone has 100... Oh, and don't dare to actually use the spells, it will weaken you... The Materia system, while not being THAT great, was way better.
The Story in FF7 also made kinda sense (it was a little stereotype) while FF8 seems to be a huge Clusterfuck (woot, were all Brothers/Sister and the Witch is our Mother while the leader of our Garden is our Father?... ... Stupid).
The Lagnua parts? Ahm, am I the only one that did not "get" what they really had to do with your story? They delivered some background, but why do you get these "flashbacks" in the first place and why are they mostly pretty pointless?

FF8 was not bad... But it was weird.

Oh, and advice for the future, make sure you buy an extra Mage Masher (after youve used a couple in synth) because im at a point where I need a Mage Masher and a Gladius to synth Zidane's next weapon, but im too high a level to actually buy a Mage Masher, QQ.

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet:

The passion and dedication of modders never ceases to amaze me. It looks absolutely brilliant (minor spelling issue aside). I checked the mapsters thread and it's been dead for a few months. I really hope the team hasn't stopped working on it because this is pretty much a hybrid of my two most favorite series.

Ive played the game up untill that treasure hunter bloke turned up and was getting terra out, im going to continue further but im still not intrested to be honest, the ATB system its implemented it much too slow. Gameplay from FF4/5 surpasses it in the 2d games in my opinion.

Turn on Active Battle and game speed to Fastest. Derp.

Also, you cannot form an opinion of the gameplay if you haven't played more then 20 minutes of the game. It doesn't even scratch the surface. Derp.

You two should stop arguing. We are all Final Fantasy brothers in this place.

Anyway, I gave FFXIII another try, and--surprisingly--I really like it. Maybe I wasn't in the right mindset the first go around (or maybe I lowered my expectations), but it's really, really fun. And the characters aren't so grating! Hope actually starts to toughen up a lot sooner than I remember (in the forest, I think) when he's with Lightning.

The Vile Peaks is easily the worst zone ever created in FF. It's ugly, monotonous and so, so long. Especially after the beautiful crystalized lake. Glad the colors brightened after that horrendous trudge. Also, why is Snow helping the enemy? T_T

Vanille is still annoying (worst choice for internal monologues ever), but not as pure stupid as I recall. Anyway, fun game. Glad I gave it a second shot.

I'm at the end of the game in FF9 now and I have to say, the game was a lot better then I expected. However, the difficulty is not up to par compared to other FF games. FF9 is so damn easy, I've never been stuck on any boss yet which is odd for a FF game and am a little disappointed.

If you haven't been grinding, you'll find that the last few bosses can be quite a wake up call, unless you're using a strategy guide and already know exactly what to do =p.

That said, no final fantasy game has ever been truly challenging. Most of us don't play them for the challenge, we play them for the story, and for the characters.

As to final fantasy 13, I enjoyed the fighting system a lot, and I loved the full health/resources after each fight system, it made the battles less of a chore to get through with just auto-attack and more of a question of which resources are more effective. The game would have benefited from allowing you to switch control of characters mid-fight, since the AI (medic in particular) wasn't quite optimal, and I felt I could have done a lot better with direct control at various points in time. The biggest issue with the battle system was that whenever you switched into synergist, saboteur, or sentinel, you just kind of got bored and sat there without any decisions to make really. Being able to switch party leader mid-fight to control another party member while the other two are AI controlled wouldn't have changed your group paradigms at all, but it would have been more fun, and it would have provided a feeling of having more control over the gameplay.

I didn't mind the linearity that much, it really enhanced the story they wanted to tell, since the lack of exploration made it feel like the party was under pressure the entire time, rather than the typical *the worlds in serious trouble, it's going to end soon! Better go explore this area of the world and find some treasure!* feeling.

I liked the story quite a bit, it was different than the others, with a more fatalistic "If we're doomed no matter what we do, what should we do?" question being asked. It was enthralling, and left me wondering quite a bit about the lore of the world and the game, and I did wind up wanting more of it. I didn't like the way they provided the details of the story through a database in the menu rather than through a more dynamic, standard story telling method like character interaction, but even if you don't read the database, you can understand the story quite well (you'll just lack specific details).

What I didn't like was the characters: Vanille was annoying, Hope was a poor character choice for the game, it didn't need an extremely emo character when the entire story is about fatalism and all of the other characters fill that role to an extent already, Snow was very one-dimensional, and Fang entered a lot later than I would have liked. That said, while I didn't ever actually use him due to him being rather weak, Sahz was actually a decent character, and Lightning, while having a ridiculous name, had quite a bit of depth to her and was interesting.

The other main dislike was the fact that it takes almost half the game before you're given actual, full control over the characters development and battle tactics, and have the ability to control who goes into fights and who doesn't. The first half just feels like a movie that requires you to push buttons rather than a game, since you don't get to make actual decisions. That also kills the replay value.

The graphics were excellent, and the visuals were stunning, but the music wasn't up to par on this one, in my humble opinion (no Nobuo >_<). The cutscenes were fantastic (particularly the one at the start of chapter 12 I believe), although I wish there had been more of them (they felt sparse).

All in all, the game is undeserving of all the hate it has gotten. It certainly isn't the best title in the series, but it actually wasn't bad, and I certainly wouldn't label it as the worst in the series.

*shrug* people like different things. 7 certainly wasn't perfect, and while I do feel it was one of the better games, there are people who liked some of the others better.

Arguing over which is the best is kind of pointless, unless you want to provide detailed reasons.

Ah, Final Fantasy VII.
Aeris and Sephiroth are still the only game characters to give me real chills.

Got a used PS1 copy of it, but the discs are horribly mauled making it hard to even start

I know one of the main points against FF13 (and for some, FF10) was the voice acting. One emo voice or annoying character or overdramaticized wording from characters tends to push people overboard. But, imagine for just a second, what if your favorite classic FF game (1-9) had voice acting in it?

FF4? I'd probably want to murder Palom and Porom, but I'd get a huge laugh out of when Tellah called Edward a spoony bard. Yang's voice would probably be a little annoying whenever he did his battle cries unless they voiced it over with a Bruce Lee impersonator.

FF6? Cyan I think would be the most hilarious guy to listen to, except for when he is super sad about his family. Kefka would have to retain that stupid laugh though, its just a part of the game! The characters in 6 though have very ranging and dynamic personalities though, they have lots of sad, excited, fearful, courageous and so forth moments. I think I would love to hear this one voiced over.

FF7? We all know we would murder the emo Cloud. Most people wouldn't make it past the 2nd CD probably. I kind of just imagine the FF7AC voiced going a long with the dialogue. Tifa would be okay, Yuffie would become like Vanille and annoying. Red XIII and Vincent would probably be just fine.

FF8? I think we'd all want to murder the game for voicing Squall, Selphie, and Zell. I can only imagine the level of emo'ness and then over the top silly comments from the latter 2. Rinoa would also have her fair share of emo'ness, blah.

FF9? Steiner would be hilarious, hands down. Zidane-Steiner interaction would be great, and I'm sure I would still feel even more sad for Vivi's situation if I could hear the timidness in the voice.

Just logged in just to vote for FVII, best game ever I just replayed it and had tons of fun even though the graphics weren't great anymore although i was using a graphics mod (played on PC ofc)!

(it wouldn't even work without that mod, therefore i had to use it and it was better anyway)
