Frankly i haven't been "burned" in quite awhile when it comes to day 1 releases, anything ive bought on release day or pre-ordered worked great. I had no troubles at all playing Mordor, Alien Isolation, and Borderlands day 1, and was happy to play them immediately. I could see how frustrating it would be if you bought any Ubisoft game in the passed year, but frankly, you get what you deserve for giving Ubi any money in the 1st place. I guess im a little pissed off at Beyond Earth, but even then, the game worked fine, and i played it non-stop for a week, even though its not really good. Also who would have thought that Creative Assembly, who always publish buggy messes on Day 1, would release (at least for me) a bug free game in Alien Isolation, lol. Imo, if the game is single player, its not always bad to buy Day 1 since their less likely to fuck it up, if the game has any kind of multiplayer, or server side component, (say an MMO, or something which needs always online checks), then stay the fuck away. Hence, anything from Ubisoft should always be a no go, since you know Uplay is going to fuck you in the ass, and the amount of online garbage Ubi makes people do for all their games, should be a deal breaker. Uhhh, /rant.

Even when you have realistic expectations, which are usually based on the games features/selling points, most game makers fail to deliver over and over again, which wasn't the case in the 90s (ok well maybe it was, but clearly not as widespread as it is today). Remember when people were waiting for X game to release and pretty much everyone was blown away by how cool and good X game was? Nowadays, most games end up being a deception because game makers hyped up their games with lots of cool stuff that aren't even there at release, it was just so poorly executed it that it end up being total crap or it just won't ever be in the game. Sure it doesn't apply to all games, but I'm pretty sure a good amount would end up in that category. When you're at a point that having realistic expectations means expecting the game to be bad to not be disappointed or just to play an "okay" game, there's something wrong IMO. I think it should be game makers who should be more realistic about their approach on how to sell their games and not deceive their customers instead of gamers having to lower their expectations. But it doesn't work that way and never will. Also, it's subjective how good a game is and if it's worth a preorder/release day buy. Some people would be pretty happy with what I consider an "okay" game but I'm somewhat pretty judgmental when it comes to games.

I haven't bought any of those game, but I did pre-order Sanctum 2 (which also gave you another game freely) and I don't regret it

Can't say I've made any pre-orders/day 1 purchases that I've truely regretted in years, like currently I have Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity pre-ordered and I'd be quite surprised if those didn't deliver. Diablo 3's lack of any PvP was probably what I felt most scammed with.

Games are sold today mostly on hype rather than substance. It's even hard to trust a lot of video game reviewers/critics since most them either have to hop in bed with game producers or find a new job. The ones who have managed to avoid that fate are few and far between. TB does an excellent job of being highly critical of new games which are bug-ridden. He's quite fair when he reviews games imo, not that I agree with everything that he says when he does "wtf", but he's quite a fair reviewer. I still haven't bought anything off of steam yet. I'm not even finished playing all the games I got for free by following this thread.

For me it was FFXII in 2007. I legit thought it would be the last great game on PS2 and bought it without reading any review a few days after relase. It was so utterly bad and boring I had to drop it halfway.

I initially thought I bought the wrong game when I started playing that. FFX-2 was probably even more wtf coming from the awesome that was FFX, rehashed maps and magical girls.

I preordered Titanfall and love it still. Not exactly game of the year material, but exactly what I was looking for. What's the problem? As a full disclaimer though...I played the beta and didn't pay attention to any of the marketing outside of early "this is a game that is going to happen" announcements; my decision was based entirely on what I'd played so I think that's why I wasn't disappointed by anything. Without that beta I wouldn't have launch purchased because I'm considerably more careful about buying early now after the ME3 fiasco. Got really burned on that one. On December 30 2014 17:18 Vaelone wrote: I'm actually considering picking up colonial marines for some co-op action since it's so cheap now, wouldn't consider playing it alone but co-op can make utter crap games quite playable. I always find Colonial Marines to be unfairly maligned. Its a poor quality game but its not "zomg worst game evar". I found it to be a somewhat dull shooter with questionable gameplay mechanics. I got it for a couple of quid in a massive sale the other year and whilst I'd hesitate to recommend it even cheap I wouldn't discourage people from it. Its worth the price of a sandwich for the entertaining bits and its not exactly completely broken or anything. Colonial Marines always seems a case study of not living up to the hype based on gameplay trailers. Which, frankly, everyone should be suspicious of by now anyway. On topic: Mafia 2 and Tales from the Borderlands at £5 and £14 respectively. Thoughts?

None, since I actually think that there has come some really good games as of late. The bad GUI aside, I love Civ: Beyond Earth (I actually think it is better then pre-BNW Civ5 was). I also don't regret buying Sanctum 2 at full price (Even if the story and level design was bad in the last DLC)

The last game I bought at full price was the last of us on PS3. Well worth the money, better than the asking price. Feels like the era of buying at release on console is over as well, so many games are patching instead of releasing solid now a days. The most ironic part of pc gaming for me is going into a store, buying the game, going home and writing the cd key into steam then throwing the disc away. That is so often cheaper than buying it on steam in the middle of a game's lifetime.

What I got so far are: Monaco, Hammerwatch and Accleration of Suguri. Haven't had a chance to test Monaco since I am waiting a friend or two to hop in with, but Hammerwatch has been decent fun like I expected, will probably play more if I can get few friends into it. But the biggest surprise was the Accleration of Suguri, an ugly doujin game PS port with asspull story but super solid gameplay. It seems so simplistic but has a lot of things going on for, I really hope someone will eventually pick up the concept and build upon it, since it's a bit like GunZ in a way that there might be slightly similar games but not truely the same which have some of the finest gameplay I've experienced (gunz2 so lame ._. ) Now I'm sitting on some 4€ from market and waiting for more possible grabs, hoping to find gems.

The "puzzle" is decently challenging, and some achievements require you to crack your brain, which is another plus point. You can actually brute force your way through (which I shamefully did), but that's gonna defeat the purpose of the game
