Don't worry about your fedhas piety. It doesn't decay over time, and you don't have a ton of reason to keep it high either since it does nothing past 5* level.

Think of mushrooms dying as being like piety decay over time ... it's probably a similar amount of piety loss (or less).

See the problem is, I have this Human Gladiator who isn't very strong. I havn't found any good items, so I'm surviving on a blowgun, nets, and these mushrooms. I'm going through mushrooms pretty fast, considering anything like an ogre/unique/centaur can blow them up in 1 shot. Should I just toughen up and use less mushrooms or what?

I assume your hugl started with a weapon (hopefully trident, falchion, or qstaff) ... try hitting things with it? As long as you are standing next to your mushrooms then enemies will attack you instead of your mushrooms most of the time, and you should be able to take a single hit from an ogre no problem (and the ogre is simultaneously standing next to some mushrooms and they have 20 damage confusion melee). If you get hurt enough that you are then in danger of dying on the next hit, swap places with a mushroom so you're no longer in danger.

Centaurs will kill mushrooms, yes ... this is just what enemies with strong ranged combat do to things that don't move.

Try getting 3 mushrooms and positioning yourself so that 2 mushrooms are next to you and 1 is behind you, that way you can always retreat through a mushroom wall if you're taking too much damage.

Also, you get a lot of mushroom hp from Invocations, so maybe you're not putting enough points into that. 6-10 should be fine to survive 3 hits from most things.
We found Dove in a soapless place.

Hey! I'm the aforementioned "BountyHunterSAx" from Crawl Tavern. I do dungeon crawl vids on my youtube channel - one each weekend with some extras here and there. My schtick when I do these Let's Plays is to explain my logic and reasoning for playing the way I do and the decision-making process for how I play.

Of course, I'm not always as careful as I should be, and the vast majority of my deaths come from that sort of carelessness. I don't believe in only posting successes, so you get a sense for just what my talent is/isn't. Suffice it to say, when I use more powerful combinations I generally at least get through the Lair provided I'm not playing super carelessly.

I've got 9 wins at this point. In particular my first ever Felid Summoner "Cat of Nine Tails Run", (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN8vJzcK0VY ) won the game with a full 20+ part recording series. It's a very easy to play, easy to run build with a lot of forgiveness since cats get extra lives.

Also, I run the entire extended endgame with Shinegami (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkzpGavm3917KNvjT-6EreuYcQwGsMiwa) starting off at having cleared out Zot:5 with 5 runes and then proceeding to get the rest.

Most useful to a starting player though would be my "How to start a Spriggan Wizard" video. Unfortunately, this is one of the very first videos I ever made for crawl back before my first win. My knowledge and skills have improved vastly since then. So while it wil reliably get you to the Lair and in good shape, I can't strongly recommend it anymore.

Okay, so I've started incorporating spellcasting into a melee character and I like how it's been going. On this DDFi I found a vampiric trident on D2, and have been worshipping Ashenzari and stabbing my way through the game (I figured out how the cookbook works). This is basically going to be a 3-rune run since everything is the extended lategame isn't subject to weapon vampiricism. I'm at 2/3 runes and the 3rd one is on Swamp:5, but Mara lurks on Swamp:4. The thing is, Mara has a vampiric demon trident and I really want it. I spent a couple hours trying to kill Mara but as a character with kinda poor damage output, no conjurations, etc I always fail to tag her before she can get away. Even worse, Mara isn't subject to weapon vampiricism so I have to keep on going and hitting other things to heal up between attempts.

I asked for some help in ##crawl and someone suggested with my 19 earth magic I could learn Iron Bolt and LRD and try to faceroll Mara with conjurations. I've been able to mitigate the dangerousness of my "ghosts" that Mara makes by wielding a bread and swapping back to a weapon, but once they know conjurations things will get much more dangerous. Thing is, after a couple hours trying to kill Mara over and over again just to see her teleport away or me have to back off and heal, I'm beginning to think that this is one of those decisions I'll look back on as an unforced error that could lose me a winning game.

In any case, guys, do you think this character can run Zot as-is? I'll probably level up a bit clearing out swamp:5 and D20-27, but I'm basically stuck with the vampiric trident as a weapon. I want to just get the orb and get out, and if that can be done with the trident instead of a demon trident all's the better.

Got my second win as a Centaur Hunter. Zot: 5 was MONSTROUS. I seriously at one point almost gave up, when I ran out of arrows. I nearly suicided myself going for the Orb, but decided to teleport out and see if I could salvage something, anything from the wreckage. Used my backup lajatang that had never been drawn in anger before Zot 5, expecting to die, and ended up killing some foes, collecting a bunch of my arrows from the floor and grabbing some Oka ammo gifts. Somehow, I managed to claw together a run to the Orb chamber: I'd actually killed almost anything, and my rush to the Orb appeared to have scattered the opposition, and I was able to get to the Orb. I almost died on the Orb run: Had 12 hp left at one stage while I was exiting Zot, which I hadn't cleared due to ammo shortages. Luckily, with the help of some power-wands, I survived that and the run was fairly easy from then on. Definitely clawed victory from the jaws of defeat in that one. Lesson learnt: Never give up.

So after a few weeks of not being able to play I started a new run again, rolled with a random character and got a Draconian wizard, feels like I've been pretty lucky so far this run, things have been going smooth. I've now reached the point where I don't really know how to continue. Where should I be going, what items and spells should I be looking for? any tips would be welcome!

If you don't know where to go, doing more of the dungeon is basically always a fine decision. Unless you've run out of dungeon, of course--then you go get 3 runes and win!

You probably don't really want to walk around with rF--, since getting hit with a fireball or flame arrow or bolt of fire might just kill you. I would suggest wearing your ring of protection from fire while you're walking around (replacing one ring of ice, obviously), and then you can swap in your second ring of ice if you want more power and you're fighting something that doesn't use fire.

As far as skills go there are a few things you can do. Your offense is good enough to last for quite a long time--you have high-power bolt of cold, plus freezing cloud, and combined that's enough to get you through almost an entire three rune game. So there are four things that stand out as useful to me (probably roughly in the order I would do these things, but other players would do different things):

1) Get dodging skill for more EV. It will be cheap for a while and will dramatically improve your survivability. 8-ish dodging is a good target.

2) Get some melee skill. Unless there's something I don't know about lying around (staff of cold, demon weapon) then get long blades skill and you will be ok with that elec long sword. You only need ~8 skill to be competent at hitting things that aren't terribly dangerous, so you can save mp and probably keep yourself out of a bad situation.

3) If you like you can learn shadow creatures, which is a very small investment with Veh and is ridiculously powerful.

4) You can pick up poison arrow or work toward chain lightning or ice storm for bigger conjurations damage. This is a bigger investment than the above 3 options though, so I would do this later.

As an aside I don't think training t&d skill past maybe 5 is worthwhile in 0.12, since you no longer need it to find secret doors, which was the biggest thing I trained it for in the past (finding doors that I as a player knew existed, but that my character did not). My past several wins have all had 0 t&d skill.

Ok I'm running a Hopr now and things are going fairly smooth. Cleared out Lair, first level of Vault, and now I'm down to D:20. Just need y'alls opinion on what axe I should use.

+4+4 orc executioner's axe (frost)
or
+10+6 mythril axe Arga (Speed, MR, Str +2)

I'm going to give whatever I don't pick to one of my followers, so I have to be certain I get the best one.

Wait, what kind of axe is the artifact one? If it's a hand axe or war axe, it's significantly worse, but any other kind is probably better.

I had never seen an axe like it before either. Upon further examination, it looks to be 1 handed/150% base attack delay (I assume it drops to 75% due to speed)/+0 accuracy/11 dmg rating

Normally I would be all over it, but I Acquired that executioners axe and don't really want to give it up unnecessarily because I can't really get it back unless one of my highly groomed orc warlords die.

I have a couple unique bucklers I could finally use if I switched. Does that change your advice any, crate?

Weapon type matters more than anything in Crawl. Even an unbranded +0 executioner's axe would probably outdamage that axe if your skill is high enough.

And no, definitely not worth switching to use a shield. You'd probably only do that if you had a really amazing broad axe.

Alright, well I have another axe in question:

+12/+15 obsidian axe (chop/Lev/Str +3/Sinvs/Curse) Randomly recurses itself

Accuracy -2, Bse Dmg 14, Delay 160%

is it better than my +4/+5 exec axe of frost? On the downside, I cannot give this one to my troops because they wont pick up anything with a curse on it, so if I cant use it then its going into the stash.

Well, that's a Broad Axe which is the best 1-handed axe, but Vorpal is not a good brand. You'll be doing better with the 4/5 exec axe of Frost assuming you have enough axe skill to use it well I think just because exec axes deal so much damage and frost is a very good brand. If you have a good shield I guess it could be okay since it has lots of +damage but really Vorpal is underwhelming.

The problem with the obsidian axe is it mesmerises you every time you see an enemy. This is likely to get you killed eventually. It's pretty strong other than that though.

oh, wow, that mesmerize is actually really bad. Don't use this axe.
obsidian axe[1/2]: A +12, +15 broad axe of chopping that mesmerises you whenever a monster is in sight. +3 Str, SInv, +Lev, always recurses, sometimes summons a usually-friendly demon (3 or 4) when you kill stuff. Also cures confusion when you're mesmerised.
obsidian axe[2/2]: Visions of slaying the oklob plant flood into your mind. You cannot move away from the oklob plant!

need quick help: after reading this thread i got i the game again. got bored of vpsu quickly cause of all the input you gotta do and my 3rd mifi (tab hooray)got some nice drops, through d10/lair/orc1-3.

now im in a sticky situation i dont know is possible to escape but id love to keep him:
Nessos that sucker has me pinned in a smallish area of orc. i dont think i can get out of los but am only 1 tile away from saving stairs. more problem: im at 6hp & red poisnd so almost dead, got potion of health/curing and a invis wand and have heroism on.

def stats : 23-11-27 (ac-ev-sh)

can i get out of this or am i fucked? would hate to lose it since 4/4 ring of slaying, a +3dmg amulet + a demon trident of flaming is such a nice start.


ps dont play when tired latenight and plan to "just quickly clear x" .this situation was so damn avoidable -_-
