You'll want some traps/doors of course to avoid blundering into a zot trap or some horribleness happening to you, and you'll need fighting, eventually, so you have like more than 3 hit points. You probably want enough invocations that spending time channelling is worth it (this is one of the things vampires are really good at), but stuff like stealth isn't as useful since you'll just be summoning things not stabbing

You can win the game training nothing but spellcasting and summoning if you like. Train other skills when they give you what you want.

edit: All from a single game:

I just finished watching the ttyrec of the TeNe game. It is unfortunate that you died to Rupert cause that's where I usually die, but watching it was still helpful haha. Are there any won tutorial games from any player?

blah, just had my second furthest run in my career with DEFE of Vehemut die after clearing dungeon/orc/elves due to starvation from spellhunger

was so easily avoidable... i only let my concentration slip for a second before i was starving with no where to find food

Dying to Rupert was fine for a few reasons:

1) It was taking a huge amount of time to play that game, because I was consciously thinking before most of my actions (and then explaining many of them) instead of just acting. Had I done this for a full game it probably would have been over ten hours, which is excruciatingly slow for me.

2) The most interesting and most difficult part of the game was over. Any death from that point on was going to clearly be me doing something I knew was a bad idea and then dying from it. And in fact I had already said in the ttyrec that Rupert had the potential to kill me outright if I decided to get in view of him and stay there, and that's what happened.

3) The most important things to get from that ttyrec are how I deal with dangerous situations, especially early on when your main weapon against them is playing smart tactically (because you don't have consumables) and you see that just fine. I actually disagree somewhat with my own skill training that I did in that ttyrec but as you can see as long as you do something sensible it's fine.

I don't know of anyone good doing something similar to this in a full game ... there are some videos on Youtube but they come from a player who definitely has questionable decision-making (sky/snow) and from a player who I suspect has questionable decision-making (BountyHunterSAx on tavern) and I'm not sure what kind of commentary they provide since I haven't watched them. Elynae said he might do a full game on Youtube at some point as something like a tutorial.

So I randomed MfSu for my next character, and because I've already won su of sif, ash, and tso I decided that it was time for su of xom.

0.12 Xom is much better than 0.11 Xom: less torment, less stat drain, and he has some fun new effects. Xom is actually maybe my favourite god now, though he's still not legitimately good (unless maybe you're unarmed, then he's probably actually quite good).

Then in lair I found the plutonium sword.

Contam property was changed in 0.12: it no longer gives glow over time; instead it gives 7 contam when you unwield/unequip an item with it (this is enough that you will ~50% of the time or so get a mutation when you unwield). But the plutonium sword is a +16 triple sword (aka a triple sword of doing all the damage), so you don't want to unwield it anyway. And Mf actually has +1 long blades apt.

After hitting some things with it I learned that it got another change in 0.12: it applies "tmut miscast" effects on enemies that you hit with it, sometimes. So this is extra damage, petrification, or polymorph. Altogether quite awesome. I had an amusing moment in lair when I hit some j with it and surprise storm dragon appeared ... the poly is sometimes bad but it's still a +16 triple sword so mostly it amounts to not doing much except occasionally changing the amount of xp enemies are worth.

Anyway summoner is still overpowered so this mfsu has been quite easy, scorpions and Xom giving me fast move 1 plus buying a book of air for swiftness has solved any serious problems so far.

Oh cool good DEFE run brewing... got quick staff of chaos from crazy yuif, lots of good aux armor... researched all spells from book of flames, ring of fire and sustenance

d7 rolls around, and i see a fortress full of kabolds, sure why not should be pretty easy...

clear the right side no problem

moving on to the left

BAM miscast fireball, take me down to 10% health. BAM big kabold throws dart of explosion. You die.

Doesn't chaos brand sometimes haste or berserk enemies? If I remember correctly it's quite likely to cause death.

Chaos brand is actually quite good. It will occasionally do something bad, but if you are prepared for that possibility it is a strong brand. Additionally a quarterstaff is a good weapon early on and Yiuf's is often well-enchanted.

I like Yiuf's staff and use it every chance I get on my mages. It gives you the firepower you need early on to tackle pesky imps and also it transitions well into late-game staffs. The negative effects are not that big of a deal because they rarely come up, especially when you aren't really meleeing things anyway.

Gah, player ghosts are so frustrating, I've lost like 4 characters in a row now to ghosts of my dead FEs 1 shotting me with fireballs..

If you want, play online and you'll be dealing with other people's ghosts instead of your own (most of the time). Dealing with a HoBe ghost is like way easier than dealing with a DEFE ghost-- you can usually just dive and avoid it.

So that just happened to me, any advice on what to do in a case like this? I had no fears, no fogs, TP didn't seem to work in the closed space for some reason, didn't have any way to see invis.

Unseen Horrors are like pretty annoying. You can try conjuring a flame in a hallway between you and it, but I don't really know what else you can do without see invis or just finding a hall and throwing fire down it at him.

@Tarias, stasis on your amu prevents tele iirc

edit, slowass internet connection on mobile fails the day again! And ye, they are quite nasty for casters early on without vision
