Just wondering if anyone's a big fan of the social coupon site fad nowadays.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, the most famous one (and the one that Google recently failed at purchasing) is Groupon. The concept goes like this:

1) The website, once a day, gives members the opportunity to opt in for a substantial coupon for a particular business. The coupon takes the form of "pay $[X] and get $[Y] amount of stuff at our store". Usually the ration is at least $2-to-$1 if not more.
2) The website requires a certain minimum number of group members to opt in over that day for the coupon to actually take effect.
a. If not enough people want it, the coupon dies at the end of the day and nobody gets charged anything.
b. If enough people want it, "the deal is on" and the credit cards of those people that signed up are charged for the amount of the coupon.
3) Print out the coupon (or bring it up on your smartphone if you're a douchebag hipster) and present it at the store, and it's as good as cash for the amount of money indicated.

It's an excellent business model to all involved. First, it's good for the buyers since they get a deal. Second, it's good for the business because they get to only offer the sale if the amount of business it generates is good enough to justify it. Third, the website makes hella money and businesses are breaking down their doors to get featured.

The problem is because it's such a simple model, every coupon site has shamelessly copied it. In addition, since Groupon has snubbed Google's offer Google is now approaching all its competitors.

I'm personally signed up for the Toronto version of Groupon as well as Living Social and Redflagdeals.ca's Deal of the Day. Anybody else love this shit?

Looks like a good deal. I've never heard about this and the first thing I wonder how legit is it. What is the trick ? But as people seem to actually be able to use the coupons it might just be a good buisiness plan. I guesse if there's enough reveneu created by the larger groups wanting the coupons it's a good deal for the company as well as the site (I assume they just get a few % of the coupons).

Heh, I'm willing to delete a few emails every day for the off chance that one gives me mad deals. But that's just me.

omfg, this just got big here in Czech republic, like 20 sites during two months out of nowhere and every single of them prospering very well (this is basically risk-free business anyway). Why didn't I hear about it a year ago, could've been millionaire

There's no trick. The first company which started this here few months ago sold coupons for almost 8 million euros already. For the whole time they've been doing it just with 4 persons, now they employed few more. Now I don't know how many % they take from each coupon but even if it was only 5, it's still fucking gold.

Only checked for Groupon and especially liked Part 3 (4 is also interesting) of the Privacy Policy, making that site just another data mining place for companies. The Privacy Policy wasn't too bad, better than Facebook, but i have no doubt that other sites have far worse policies.

Even ignoring the privacy concerns, i don't see any reason to register to such a site. It's just something else that makes you buy things you wouldn't normally buy, just because you get them cheaper.

Of course it's data mining for companies, it's an advertising site. That's why Google was so interested, in addition to the foot traffic they can offer businesses customer analytics.

Targeted advertising based on data analysis isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I've used Groupon, I can vouch for the site as I did indeed get the deal I paid for pretty awesome price too.

If anyone is thinking about signing up to Groupon and uses me as a referal and i'll put all the cash into an SC2 tournament :-]

As for czech sites, you don't even register there, all the info you give them is your e-mail, where they send you a voucher. Haven't recieved any e-mail ads yet.

And as for usefulness. The offers are really fucking great, minimal discount is 40 %, mostly it's between 50 and 60 %. Would you normally buy Ferrari? I guess not. But if they offered you it for 10 euros I'm sure you would. There was for example this great deal where they offered you 5 beers in really good pub for 0,6 euro (normally it would cost you 7-8 euros), isn't that sweet?

And I can say it saved me lot of money and time this christmas
