I don't know what that guy must have been smoking, but playing the game offline is probably the easiest way to play it because you can't get invaded by other players. I don't remember if you got pure white tendency (mobs get slightly weaker) default for being online, but I doubt it. I would say it's definitely worth buying even if you never go online, I did that my first play-trough of Demon's Souls and it was very enjoyable and good for me because when I started going online and got invaded I actually knew how to play the game.
Thanks for replying. In the review (ign.com) the editor said that in Dark Souls the online-interaction between players has gone a lot towards helping INSTEAD of killing others. I also thought about this in the first place; how does he know that since the game wasn't out anywhere by then? Thats quite a judgement if he only played with other journalists. Anyway thanks for your opinion, gonna check this out on friday

Im a little familiar with the game concept, but haven't played the prequel before since I own an x360. Im hyped for the game and Im hoping to buy it as soon as it's out in EU, but is the game anywhere near playable without being online? I've read a couple of reviews where the editor has underscored the fact that the online play is a mandatory part of the whole experience, and that being offline makes the game SIGNIFICANTLY harder. Is this really true, or do you really find the possibility to be online a mandatory? Is the game worth buying if you cant play it online?
The reason im asking this is that my network equipment are quite far away from my xbox, and i use xbox live very randomly, like 5-10 times a year when i play a game or two online or when i download stuff. It's always a hassle with the cables (it's like 30 meters of cable required), so i usem them only when i need something specific done. Sure, i could buy the xbox wireless adapter, but it feels like a waste since to me Dark Souls seems like the first and only game that requires the online capabilities permanently, instead of just DLC downloading or random online matches twice a year.
Depends, in the original Demon Souls, when I first started off, the tips left on the floor by other players were immeasurably helpful (the higher rated ones that were), without having to look at a faq. Being able to summon players is also very helpful in clearing the early dungeons although it is not a necessity, as one could clear the entire Demon Souls solo if one is careful with their stats leveling and equipment. Without the online capabilities, you would be looking missing:
1. Blue phantoms (coop) 2. Black phantoms (pvp) 3. Hints on the floor 4. White ghosts that you can see (people who are also in the same area as you are in, in their own game)

Alright guys the game is out and I completely forgot about this thread. I'm going to start updating it.
edit: I actually can't edit the OP o_O. I guess i'll make a new post and ask a mod to edit it into the OP.

Introduction: Prologue
+ Show Spoiler +Enter a dark world filled with despair and threaded by hope where your ability to creatively strategize, learn and overcome unpredictable and unique challenges determines your fate. Dark Souls will demand your absolute concentration, unflinchingly punish your mistakes, but reward your ability to learn from death. Each challenge is a mind game met with endless combinations that will test your ability to creatively strategize a way to conquer unimaginable monsters and progress deeper into this bleak and forbidding environment filled with the un-dead.
Extremely Deep, Dark & Difficult - Unforgiving in its punishment, yet rewarding for the determined - learn to strategize freely and conquer seemingly impossible challenges. You will organically design your own gameplay style by developing your character and continuously trying different strategies to finally achieve successful progression. Fully Seamless World - Explore a completely integrated world of dark fantasy where dungeons are seamlessly intertwined, with great height.
Mastery Earns Progression - Contains 60 hours of gameplay, with nearly 100 uniquely despair-inducing monsters & an incredibly nuanced weaponry & magic spells system, the effectiveness of which is determined by combat situation, fighting style and character attributes. Player success depends on their eventual mastery of how and when to use the magic spells, choice of armor, the number of weapons, the types of weapons, and the moves attached to the weapons.
Network Play - Players may cross paths with one another, interacting with each other throughout the game even as each player plays their own game. Networked play allows users to cross paths with one another to enhance the single-player gameplay experience without destroying it.
Flexible Character Development & Role Play - As the player progresses, they must carefully choose which of their character's abilities to enhance as this will determine their progression style. Players can choose to play as a sword master and a wizard, for example. Community - See other real players and empathize with their journey, learn from seeing how others died, find and leave messages for your fellow players; helping them or leading them into death.
Symbolic of Life & Hope - The Beacon Fire is an important feature of Dark Souls for many reasons. Though in gameplay it serves as a recovery and re-spawn point for players whose health gets low, it is also where players can emotionally share experiences with other players, and is the one place in the dark world where players can find a fleeting moment of warmth and calm.

Here is a Link to the wikispace of Dark Souls. If you played Demon Souls you'll find this very familiar. It's basically a compilation of Item, mob, upgrade lists as well as walkthrough's as they come in. So check here regularly if you are in need of help during the game
Classes: + Show Spoiler +
Gifts:
+ Show Spoiler +Upon creating your character you're given choices as to what gifts you want to choose to help you along your quest. Here's the list: Blessing of the Goddess - Consumable item that fully restores HP and clears negative effects. Black Firebomb - Thrown item that creates a powerful blaze. Start with 10. Telescope - Used to see distant objects, threats, scenery and enemies. Considered a "key item" and can be used more than once. Pendant - An item filled with "blocked memories". Humanity's Twin - Obtainable from other Black Phantoms. Possibly used to restore character's Humanity. All-purpose Key - A Master Key that can open any door with SIMPLE locks. Not obtainable in the game world. Ring of Life - Increases maximum HP by a small amount. Ring of the Aged Witch - Current usage/benefit unkown.
Online Features can be found Here A few things to note:
Covenants - When exploring the game world, specific opportunities will allow the player to ally with a specific person/object. This oath/allegiance system is called a Covenant. It's a new, unique feature to the Dark Souls online experience which adds immersion and anticipation. Covenants could potentially align your character with other players, or create tension and competition as enemies. This system is dissimilar to an "MMO guild", but will allow the game to create a unique gaming experience for each player. Known covenants: Way of White, Princess's Guard, Forest Hunter, Gravelord Servant, Chaos Servant, Path of the Dragon, Warrior of Sunlight, Blades of the Darkmoon, and Darkwraiths.
Gravelord - Think Demon's Souls was hard? Gravelord intensifies the experience of online gameplay and invasion through sabtoage. Invoking the power of Gravelord ups the difficulty of a random player's world when in a given area. To remove the curse, the affected player must find the Gravelord markings, allowing him/her to invade then kill the caster. The tension this creates will no doubt enhance the challenge of the game.
Global Servers - According to an early interview, players will be able to connect globally, regardless of game version.
Prepare to Die.
Edit: If a mod is reading this, can they change it into the OP? Mine is really outdated lol.

Is there anyone here who plays a archer sort of character? I want to know if it works similar to Demon's Souls when you shoot your bow. I'm quite interested in going archer in this game but I really didn't like it in Demon's Souls in the long run.

Does DS require gold membership for Xbox live playing? I know it feels like a stupid question, this is especially the kind of game that shouldn't require additional fees for online play, but i believe that Microsoft has an opinion on this...

Works almost exactly the same. The quiver system is different, as far as I can tell.

You're supposed to explore! There is no right or wrong path. Yeah eventually you might want to get around to breaking that curse of the undead or whatever. But that will wait while you find your way around the world and level up some. Yes there is. The Skeletons are the WRONG PATH at the start of the game, it's way too hard. The correct path for new characters is to go uphill then upstairs until you enter the castle city.
I found this out the hard way. I rarely follow games in development that i am excited about to keep as much mystery as possible and knew the world was a bit more "open" so when I got to the splitting paths i found the stairs to the jail and a back path to the skeletons. raged for about an hour before i gave up and explored other areas and found the stairs up.
I had a sneaking suspicion that the game couldnt be that much harder than demon souls and was pissy that the skeletons gave no spirits...

I think he can't because it has been over 6 months since he last edited. He clearly "knows" how to edit since he has done it before as shown in the OP. TL implemented this feature a while ago.

I just managed to beat the Bell Gargoyles. Good stuff so far.
+ Show Spoiler +Stupid things were so fucking difficult, way harder than the Demon's Souls Maneaters. The gargoyles would keep covering for each other by spitting fire and I could never get a solid hit in without getting hit. I finally resorted to summoning that Sun Warrior NPC guy who distracted the gargoyles so I could beat them.

Not really a spoiler but just in case anyone doesn't want advice, skip this: + Show Spoiler +What type of weapon you use is totally up to you, but it's important to upgrade. If you like using the longsword, that's fine, go ahead and start upgrading it -- it'll make a huge difference in the amount of damage you do, much more than it appears just by looking at the stats.

I also had an ungodly amount of difficulty trying to kill these (probably died 50 or 60 times). Until I ran back and shot the dragons tail for the drake sword. Then I slaughtered these like they were regular mobs. If you haven't already I would highly advise shooting the dragons tail (think it takes about 20 arrows) for this sword. It has a base attack of 200 and makes bosses MUCH easier.

Yeah, thanks, I think I'll do that. My damage output is just so pitiful, even if I can figure out the boss's pattern I only do like 10 damage per hit lol.

I just finished the boss after the Gargoyles .. + Show Spoiler +I destroyed the butterfly so hard. I adapted my equipment to have maximum magic defense. When she would come in close I would switch to two handed and blast her in the face with all I had. Two times and it was KO'd. This game is amazing. I'm getting so much enjoyment from it.
I'm a fuckin' dumbass. When I started the game I killed a bunch of people in the main bonfire area and then I killed the guy who sells you arrows. What a mistake that was... No drakes sword for me+ Show Spoiler + (Where you shoot at the dragons tail until you get the sword) Whoopsies :p I need to choose the humans I kill very wisely.

I would do fine until they both got down there, then I couldn't get close enough to one because of the firespread just destroying me.
I'm determined to kill that guy in front of the gate near the bonfire that's above the blacksmith.
