If they had implemented this in a completely new game there would not have been this much of a problem. By the way I hope paid mods never becomes a thing... ever.

why shouldn't people be compensated for their work? back in the day, people pirated all the games, software companies lost money. so they switched to online only games and/or dlc. then entitled people whined and whined. its like the same ppl who whine about gsl on youtube being low quality. well this stuff isn't free, someones gotta pay for it, and advertising isn't gonna cover everything.

If mods were monetized from day one on Skyrim you could make that argument. People didn't expect any payment when they started making mods for Skyrim, and the entire system was built around sharing and love for what they could do with the game.

Its kind of sad that the videogame industry is one of the very very few in the world where the seller is always right. They can shaft their consumers all day long and there will still be people defending them, not to mention the poor misguided souls that will buy the games anyway.

edit: I mean look at this shit, Bathesda claims to be anti-DRM. Anyone with even minimal knowledge about Zenimax knows this is the biggest bunch of crap on the internet.

It isn't about people being compensated for their work so much as it changing the market for how mods develop. Sure, in hindsight you'd definitely want the people involved in the creation of Dota or CS or Gary's Mod or Footy Frenzy or Median Patch or whatever to make money off of their creations, but like the advent of "indie games" becoming a self-titled tag rather than something organic, making mods a pay thing off the bat corrupts the spirit of the thing.

Mods are made from love. If the mod-makers WANT to monetize that somehow, I certainly do not object, but opening a market that encourages mod developers to expect a return on investment is a mistake.

The moment you start asking me money for your mods, is the moment you're selling me a product instead of distributing your hobby project. Once you start doing that, I'll start demanding all of the rest that comes with selling a product, like customer service and bug fixing. This ploy they tried to pull gave you no guarantees that the shit you buy works, or receives support from the mod dev should some new update break it. You got 24 hours to refund from purchase and that's it. They would been allowed to sell mods that require other paid mods to function in the first place.

If you see nothing wrong in that business model...

BTW, a lot of the mod authors said exactly what I typed above. It's a hobby, once you put money into the picture, it's no longer a hobby, it's a job. The amateur and the professional scenes should be kept separate for a reason, like they are in sports for example. If you want to get paid for your coding/designing/art work for mods, then apply a job from the field, don't start charging for mods.

They should just add a way to donate modders, or pay what you want. So people have an easy way to support their favourite mods.

I don't see the problem with modders being able to make money... If you're good at it and people like it why shouldn't it able to be rewarded. I do think they should have options to make money the way they want to, for example a freebie/premium model, donations or just a paid mod.
I don't get the fuss about this, modders can still choose to keep their mod free right?

Nope now they can't because Valve backed off and refunded all people and stopped the payed mods. See 2 post above you for why it was a bad idea. I don't want bugs and i want bugfix if i pay something.

I don't see why mods of great quality shouldn't be rewarded either. And I don't see why their original creator shouldn't make money.

You can put a donation link in your mod description at nexus. Done. You get rewarded if your mod is of quality enough that people want to donate.

Expecting customer service, support, maintenance is a fair point. That can definitely get more complicated if you have multiple mods and there are conflicts or dependencies. Still in general, I think its a good idea for people who make good stuff to be compensated, but the devil is in the implementation details. Now that I've read these arguments I can see why it was a mistake for Valve to push something so half baked out, however I think its a step in the right direction.

I think nexus is making the donations thing easier from the mod author's perspective to set up, so I mean, everyone gets the mods from nexus already anyway, you can just tip the modders there.

This is one of the best ways I've seen it put. I was never opposed to supporting mod authors for their work, which at times can be incredible and even beyond the scope of 1st party DLC. But not knowing what you're getting into when you purchase a new mod, with such a brief refund time, is a problem. No guarantee of support, both in the present with troubleshooting or in the future with updates and incompatibility with patches/etc, is a pretty huge problem.

I'll be shocked if you manage to get past the starting screen without CTD when you mod in that fashion.

I think you have to enable them a few at a time because I would guess there are a lot of incompatibilities among hundreds of mods :D
