I have decided I will start monetizing my posts on this forum.

It has been a lot of hard work thinking-up-of, writing and posting thousands of high quality posts on this here forum and I think its only fair I receive compensation. Nazgul and friends take a 75% cut (I am using their site after all) while 25% goes to the content creator. Me. Anyone that thinks that 'this is not fair' is just entitled and doesn't realise the realities of the modern world. My posts have changed lives and enlightened thousands, I deserve to receive money just like TB does.

You can start sending me donations through paypal while we wait for R1CH to code a more convenient button. Even reading this message without sending me money is piracy, illegal, and you should feel bad for stealing.

That said, I spoke with our lawyer and having mod A depend on mod B is fine--it doesn't matter if mod A is for sale and mod B is free, or if mod A is free or mod B is for sale.

How can valve say one modder can use another mod, regardless if it's paid or free? Then they refuse to delist his mod... Essentially valve is acting like it owns any mod in the workshop...

There is a diference in a modder using assets from another mod in his own mod, and a mod making a mod that only works if another mod is also present. It's like making a mod that requires an expansion or a DLC from the original company. Legally speaking it makes perfect sense.

I don't mind modders getting money for what they do. Thats why Patreon etc exists. But it seems the only one getting more money out of this is Valve.

I think they want to build a giant robot army to take over the world and they start to fear Google might achieve world domination before them so they try to get extra funding where they can.

Usually (in my experience) software that supports uploadable mods like this does basically grant themselves the rights to use and redistribute your contribution as they see fit.

Seems that volvo are rly smart and were on top of this situation before it even started.
They have been in talks with the SkyUI guys, which as you know have the 2nd most influential mod after skse and they bought them out. Skse will be also available through the workshop but for free.
SkyUI 5.0 will be behind a paywall and since like 99% of all complex and high quality mods use it, seems like volvo has effectively killed modding in a mere 2 days.

ill tell you, i really liked the whole elder scrolls series and how they put a lot of effort into making it a lasting experience.

But all that goodwill suddenly vanished into thin air and now ill probably not buy their next game before it goes into 50%+ sales.

Any decent sized modsetup would cost multiple times the cost of the legendary skyrim pack at this point. Micro transactions boys, gotta fucking love modern gaming industry. And people tell me I'm behind the times when I'd still rather pay for a disc with game on it and be done instead of having to buy 3 DLCs 2 weeks after the game launched...

As far as I have heard, skyui 4.1 will remain up for free, and I would be very surprised if any mods require the new crafting menu that is apparently the change between 4.1 and 5. (As far as I know, the only reason SkyUI is ever actually required for anything is the MCM.)

I do think there are a lot of problems with the way Valve implemented this (not least that introducing paid mods several years after Skyrim's release is a terrible idea, it might have been salveageable if they'd done this on day 0), though I think the idea of paid mods is not necessarily bad.

Apparently they looked at the hats in games like doto/csgo/tf2 and thought "ey lets do the same, it works out there" but it clearly a sophisticated gameplay altering mod can not be treated the same as mere cosmetic mods, who would have thought?

Not so fast because the system will be reviewed and implemented again in the future at a smaller scale so hopefully this system is a better alternative. Valve will not give up on a business opportunity.

I wonder what will happen to mods which moved to paid versions immediately(midas magic, wet and cold etc) Some of them even removed their mods from nexusmods. They had pretty bad comments after switching, now they won't even have the money from steam users as well

Really bad PR for those mods
