I Honestly find Skyrim to have way more replayability...its actually fun to replay every few years and just play a different way. Last year I redid it with all the harder mods and some added end game content and it was as fun as the first time. I also played through Morrowind and while solid it just doesn't have the pull Skyrim has for me. Both suffer from just becoming too powerful for the world though.

i bought it from steam like a year ago during the winter sale, but never got around to playing it until recently. started with a pure mage, but was underwhelmed and stopped. saw a youtube video about the werewolf so i am currently playing a pure werewolf, which is fun. once i beat it, i am going to try a bound archer, or sword and board warrior.

its a fun and beautiful game, but too much talking for my taste.

thanks for the info!

Unfortunately, Morrowind doesn't hold up. Hell, the first TES game I played was Oblivion right when it came out, I bought Morrowind right after I beat it because I figured it'd be awesome too and I found it unplayable.

That heavily depends on what you want from your game.
If you want a Role-playing game, then Morrowind does hold up. Even more, it holds up better than Oblivion and Skyrim combined.
If what you are looking for is an action-adventure, then yeah, Oblivion or Skyrim may be preferable.

It doesn't hold up if you're looking for a playable game. The UI is atrocious, it's incredibly hard to tell whether or not you're hitting something in melee, and the graphics are extremely dated.

Agree completely with Myr. Morrowind is much better than skyrim imo. but I prefer roleplaying games to action adventure games which is probably why

Lore, characters, story, etc. is much better in Morrowind.

The game itself is clunky as hell, and a lot of it was from release day. You couldn't level any of your skills naturally...had to grind by doing the stupidest things imaginable (swimming into a wall, casting spells 1000 times at wall, locking a door just so you could unlock it). Lack of decent map markers, escort missions that forced you to walk across half the place. And Cliff Racers, never forget the Cliff Racers.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

I really preferred the non-voiceacted, topical dialogue system of Morrowind where you unlock new topics seemingly more dynamically than the extremely stunted one-topic system of Oblivion and Skyrim, although they could have made so much more out of Morrowind's system than what they did. It's a shame poorly voice-acted dialogues is what they decided to focus on, rather than the deep and engaging storytelling written dialogue can bring.

Anyhow, it's 5 years since Skyrim came out, and it came out four years after Morrowind. Is it time to get hyped for TES6 yet, or should we accept the franchise having gone into death by MMORPG, as with Warcraft?

The game is 13 years old... Idt'd better be extremely dated graphically and UI wise, but you can probably fix a lot with mods for that.

I mean, I don't really get the argument of graphics/UI on a forum where Brood War is still greatly supported - a game that turns 20 in two years and which, to be fair, has attrocious UI/graphics compared to todays standards.

I'm not convinced that TES:O will dead end the series. I haven't played it but I was under the impression it was tangential, different dev team and all. Now that FO4 is out I'm guessing Bethesda will announce/switch focus to TES6, whatever it may be. Morrowind was 2002, Oblivion 2006, Skyrim 2011 so the timeframe is right. I can't believe it's already been that long since Skyrim...

Yeah, Skyrim made a boatload. ESO was always a side project with a different dev team. They'll make another proper ES RPG.

I'm personally rooting for going to Elsewhyre (sp?) to see the elephant sized battle cats and the wackiness of Kajjit society. Would feel more Morrowind than Oblivion or Skyrim in terms of the strangeness of the world.

Isn't Blackmarch confirmed for ES6?

Edit: no it isnt

I know, but when you're measuring whether a game holds up today despite the passage of time "oh well of course it's old" isn't an excuse. It's unplayable and atrocious by today's gaming standards, only nostalgia can really cover it. It was amazing for it's time, a landmark in the genre, but it's not worth going back and playing it now.

Look, you can easily play morrowind with the graphics mod and UI mod to make it not feel NEAR as dated.

What you won't change is the fact that I can just murder every person inside houses and the town guards never catch on, that the interactions are not near as well done as Skyrim, that you can get a stronghold but its in the middle of nowhere and servers no real purpose, and that both games offer the open world wander until I find something awesomeness but Skyrim has much more interesting and fun puzzles in its dungeons and slightly better combat and so forth. Also Skyrim's story is determined by you. Skyrim is definitely an improvement on morrowind.

Most of the best RPGs I have played come from around the time Morrowind was released, admittedly I wouldn't say Morrowind is one of them. Apart from Fallout: New Vegas I really struggle to think of many superb modern games within the RPG realm, unless I delve even more in to the action side of RPGs to draw games from the Witcher and Souls series.
