Don't consider them to be a contender or a prospect to become one anytime soon. Whether the Knicks think D'Antoni's system is exciting that is beside the point - their goal is to win championships. They have weakened their team - alot. Carmelo Anthony may be a superstar but his actual basketball ability, the major thing he is really good at when compared to other superstars is SCORING. That is all. So when you trade away 3 point shooters, you're 1 point guard, defensive role players - you have to get back a big time player. If their goal is to win championships, then I'd argue that sticking to D'Antoni's system is their biggest hurdle in reaching it. I'm one of those who believes that you need good defense, not necessarily the best or even top 3, to win a championship, and that's simply not possible with D'Antoni as your coach. However, there are those who believe that D'Antoni's brand of great defense and mediocre defense can win a ring. Apparently the Knicks are amongst those who subscribe that that theory, and Melo fits pretty well under it. Carmelo isn't going to fix all of that and while those guys may be role players it is premature to say they weren't going to get better. This was the first year that Fields, Felton, Williams, and Amar'e were even on the team. We can suspect that they may be easily replaced but how is that going to make them better than they are now? A SSOL system with no Steve Nash, and Chauncey Billups who while a good Point Guard was not playing at the level Felton was. I think Felton has shown his best by this point. He was shooting better than he's ever shot in his career in the first few months of the season, and was in the process of regressing to the mean heading into the Allstar break. He was playing great, but not Allstar great, and not great enough to make the Knicks into a contender in the East as their 2nd option. Galo, as I stated, will likely continue to improve and has the highest ceiling of the three traded to Denver by far. Chandler, from what I've seen, will likely never be more than a great role player. That's all just my personal opinion though, so I don't expect it to convince anyone by itself. I think Billups will do just fine as a PG in the SSOL system as he's a great pick-and-roll player, and a better shooter than Felton is. His veteran leadership will also become very valuable in the playoffs, and he also gives them another strong closer. However, Billups is only a temporary solution, and the Knicks obviously have to be worried about filling the PG spot very soon. There are a lot more legitimate PGs in the league now, and NY can hope that the prospect of dishing to Melo and Amare in the SSOL system will be very appealing. Where are the 3 point shooters to spread the floor? Who's playing transition defense for this team now? Is Carmelo going to play the kind of hustle defense you got from Chandler and Felton? Well, I think the first thing to consider with regards to these issues is that this is a team that is not intended to win right now, but one that is still a work in progress and will be filling out its supporting cast around Melo and Amare in the next few seasons. With that said, they currently have Billups, Fields, Walker, Williams, Mason, Douglas, and Melo who can shoot 3s. In terms of transition defense, I have to admit that I don't know enough about the remaining support cast to know who is good or bad in that area. As for Melo's hustle defense, it will likely not be like what you saw with Chandler or Felton. However, he is one of the best scorers in the league and rebounds well for his position, and he's playing in a system where defense isn't emphasized anyway. Again, the Knicks, by sticking with the SSOL system, are basically conceding to mediocre defense. If you subscribe to the idea that the East is top heavy, especially with Chicago, Boston, Miami, Milwaukee, and Orlando being ranked 1-5 in defensive efficiency then you know this trade makes New York even worse. Beating just one of these teams with a terrible defense was going to be hard - but going through TWO of them? Not happening. Agreed. But, again, I'm not one of those who believes that SSOL can win championships. Preaching to the choir here. Also the Knicks don't even have the cap space to sign CP3 or Deron Williams (the same D-Will that said he never claimed he wanted to go to NYK). There's still time for NY to make moves to clear space, and none of us know what the new CBA will be like yet. I think it's safe to say that the prospect of playing in NY did become more attractive to FAs with the addition of a 2nd superstar though.

Utah has agreed to trade All-Star point guard Deron Williams to Nets in multi-player package, Yahoo! Sports has learned. Deal is done. Derrick Favors has been pulled out of Nets practice, and told he's being traded to a Western Conference team, source tells Yahoo! Sports. Favors will go to Jazz with Harris, two first-round picks. Nets wlll send Troy Murphy to Golden State, and Warriors send Gadzuric to Nets.

Maybe there was something to the whole Williams vs. Sloan thing after all? Even if Sloan left, the ownership might not have been happy with D-Will's behavior. There's no other reason to trade a top 3 PG for a guy who can't shoot and an unproven rookie who logjams your frontcourt. wow wtf utah, deron williams is every bit as good of a prize as melo... as long as he doesn't op out. Deron is definitely a top 3 pg and there isn't a huge difference between paul, rose and williams (although rose is becoming an absolute beast).

Humps will earn his starting gig again, so his value goes up. Murphy in GSW is a maybe, I heard they were gonna try to dump him in either a quick turnaround trade or a buyout.

LoL @ Gadzuric though...that guy hasn't looked good since when he was at UCLA. I imagine they wanted Wright more than him though, plus to get rid of Murphy's contract.
