I considered playing MTGO, but to play that, you either have to spend a ton of money collecting cards to build decks, or you have to spend a couple dollars every time you enter a drafting tournament. One of my friends told me that planeswalkers is different, and doesn't have all those fees, so I think I'll get that instead.
What is the general opinion on planeswalkers here? Should I get it? DotP is great as an introductory game and having fun while also being pretty cheap to boot. If you just want to try and see if it's your sort of thing I'd definitely recommend it. It's something I'd really have found useful when first starting this game.

Been testing Archangel in an Aristocrat Act2 shell, and loving it with blood artist triggers my souls and even blood artist himself become finishers.

But I promised myself no Magic Online. And I think without the convenience of literally being able to draft whenever I should be ok.
I went to a local prerelease this weekend and even though I couldn't do anything with the cards I got I did get a foil Scavenging Ooze which pretty much paid for the event already so I'm happy and just wanted to come here and brag about that plus I've been watching this thread for a while and jonesing for some Magic, and I can finally join the discussion. Is Scavenging Ooze that valuable? You get one for buying Duel of the Planeswalkers.
SCG is buying it for $20.00 so it paid for the sealed event for me. I'm happy with that.

How is that deck right now? The few pilots I have played have been just average, and post-board the match up seems rougher for them after M14.

I just made a discovery which I wish I made a long time ago. Pauper is a fun format. The metagame is pretty intense and so many broken common combo's! I highly suggest if anyone wants to break into constructed and spend as little money as possible Pauper is the way to go in MTGO.

I was considering pauper for that very reason. Do you have any suggestions for how to get started with it?

Search for the T8s of pauper dailies, find a deck that appears in (ideally multiple) T8s and copy it. I don't really know what the metagame looks like now, but monoblack was a pretty good cheap deck the last time I played. People also win with monogreen, monoblue, Cloudpost, and Kiln Fiend.

I just took a look at the types of decks that were being played in the dailies. and scoured through the decks to see which one would be fun, and which "expensive" commons I have the most of. I also google'd a few articles and watched a few youtube videos of the decks being played that caught my eye. Learning the match ups is probably the most important step and I haven't quite done that yet.
http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper Will save you some time on looking for deck lists. (the price is usually the amount of tickets you will need to build the average deck of that style from scratch.)
I am playing Mono Blue Faeries since I love card advantage and having some control of the gameplay.

Thanks.
Which cards are legal in pauper? Is it the standard sets, modern sets? etc

Pretty much any common/uncommon(if it was printed as a common during MTGO's existence) is legal. Except for maybe like 5 or 6 super dirty cards lol. Banning a common who would have thought! https://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=magic/rules/Pauper

The deck is just so flexible and has so many routes to outplay people I don't see it going anywhere. Depending on what other random shit comes out I wouldn't be all too surprised to see the zombie core variant really shining, or even the BW midrange taking down some opens, of course still very early to tell as you never know what random stuff people come up with.

The frustrating thing about pauper then is how you won't be familiar with some of your opponent's cards unless you are a devout magic player (in which case you probably aren't sticking to pauper!).
I would prefer a standard-pauper or something like that... I guess beggars can't be choosers though.

Have you seen differences in what people have boarded against it when you were testing?

Seen more electrickerys in the last few days than any point in my life before, seen a few Lifebane zombies/Shrivel, other than that mostly the same ol Rest in Peace and whatnot.

I really want to make some sort of BW midrange deck with Shadowborn Demon but I don't think it will work. I really like the card though.

Invested in some Lilys. Nice addition to standard and one step closer to Modern =)

How much that run you? :p
My Lilys are out of the binder at this point.

Now that people have been able to think about M14 limited a bit, how do you guys like it?
Personally this might just be the perfect opportunity for me to direct my draft moneys to buy some much needed fetches so I can finally get into Legacy (emphasis on Legacy as it's like the only thing aside limited and Highlander that's played over here) and Modern a bit.
Then again I probably have missed something deep in the set and once somebody points it out, I just start drafting again.
|
There's no money in this set. All of the money cards will come down soon so you really don't have that much time to draft money cards.
Edit:
Completely missed your point. I guess that's one way to go at it. It's core set draft so people usually take off for it anyways. This set seems extra bland since the keyword is indestructibility.
I don't know, but it seems like all of the the recent changes and this core set implies that Theros will be complicated on more than one level and Wizards is trying really hard to make that set palatable to everyone which Kamigawa wasn't at all.
