New Jace will hit 100$ each before he rotates out of standard. Its just a matter of time, and a matter of how many MORE control cards they will be printing in the up coming sets. Scars of Mirrodin is bring out so much more power in term of both creatures and counter magic. Enough so that counter.dec might even be viable in limited and draft. Personally, as a tourny player who boarders ever Pro Tour to qualify, Scars brings so much more flavor in terms of options than Zendikar or Alara did that I might need to dedicate more focus on metagames than previously anticipated.

I played it for a few hours. The only reason I picked it up was because of the similarities to Magic, I found it a lot less complicated however, that's what attracts me to Magic.

Still a decent game though.

Are we looking at the same set? I see three counterspells, two that are situational, and a third that is Cancel unless you draft artifacts hard enough for it not to be. They're not bad cards, but Cancel/Essence Scatter/Negate/Flashfreeze in M10 is arguably a stronger countermagic suite than Halt Order/Stoic Rebuttal/Turn Aside, and that was never a viable draft archetype, never mind the fact that Scars Blue has no draw spells.

Scars blue has plenty of flyers to make it useful. Will it ultimatly need a second color, yea most likely, but in just testing it with MWS (for draft) getting and keeping 3 artifacts isn't as hard as most people make it out to be. Heck for 5 mana you get 3 artifacts that also block and potentially could alpha an opp. if unblocked. As for M11 counter magic, the counter magic there was too situational. As in you needed to have 2 or more of each to make sure you didn't miss a counter. Scars counters can all hit everything as far as I can recall off the top of my head. I think there might be one that counters just an artifact.

The lack of draw is an issue, but it is aswell for the rest of the colors in this set. 2nd pass after sleeps makes my idea seem way less likely. Green, Black, and Red all have better limited bombs and removal, but if paired with blue correctly could be very difficult to stop.

Precursor Golem is nice, sure, but you generally don't plan your Limited play around pulling a bomb rare.

Uhh, no, countermagic in Scars is MORE situational than the core set:

Halt Order - 2U
Instant - Uncommon
Counter target artifact spell.
Draw a card.
(Rarity makes this less reliable in Limited than Essence Scatter. They hit similar numbers of targets, but with Essence Scatter you were more likely to pull multiples.)

Stoic Rebuttal - 1UU
Instant
Metalcraft - Stoic Rebuttal costs 1 less to cast if you control three or more artifacts.
Counter target spell.
(Obviously strictly better than Cancel. Worse than Mana Leak IMO, because Mana Leak plays better with other colors.)

Turn Aside - U
Instant
Counter target spell that targets a permanent you control.
(If you want to talk situational, THIS is situational. Negate is more solid, despite costing 1 more.)

The difference is that the lack of draw hurts permission far more than it hurts other archetypes. Permission needs card advantage to make up for worse card quality.

I actually agree that blue is going to be one of the strongest colors in Scars Limited, but based on the strength of its countermagic? That's a little silly.

I was a pro tour player for some years, but I haven't played much Magic in a long time. I still follow it, and modo it up every once in awhile, but overall I don't like what they've done to the game. When they removed rochester draft from the PT rotation and replaced it with Two-Headed Giant, that was the beginning of the end. Ever since, sets have been dumbed down, and they haven't managed to keep a consistent power level. Not to mention the HORRIBLE idea of Mythic rares.

I'm hopeful for Scars. The original Mirrodin was an awesome block. But anyway, I think modo is a pretty good tool for improving at Magic. The competition is substantially better than FNM, there are pros playing in every daily and most 8-4 drafts. MWS is really great, but the only league for it is a really poor community and their tournaments are won by joke decks, so I would only use MWS to playtest with friends.

anyone from the chicagoland area play magic?(hell anyone goto northwestern university?) i need to find some friends since i just got back into magic >_<

as far as core set drafts go, M11 is actually really fun. its not as skill intensive as block sets since there arent as many synergies that fuck with card evaluation, but there are still enough archetype-y stuff to make it fun. and there arent as many ridiculous bombs as in M10(although there still are some). idk its good for me cause im not that good at draft.

mythics were nice cause they lowered the price of normal rares, but they need to not print anymore "Jace" type cards where its a staple in any deck that can play blue. its fine to print them in flashy cards that see play in one or two decks but not in every single one. its like printing all the good lands in a set at mythic.
really i just miss playing control but the only decks im willing to invest in atm are aggro like RDW and WW.

I mean most local communities are pretty friendly for the most part, you'll have your d-bags for sure, but MtG players are pretty friendly for the most part.

Just search around online, shouldn't be too hard finding a scene in a big place like Chicago.

I used to play in New York at Neutral and Schwartzman's store back in those days. Goblin clamp was pretty fun where I could outdraw B/W angel control decks with all their deep anals ^_^.

I feel simmilar to him, i used to play magic long long ago, but it never was popular here, so when pokemon cards came, i switched to that because i didn´t have anybody to play magic with (i was such a child, but it surprises me now how i knew all the rules/gameplay of mtg and beat many older players), but now that i started watching and reading again, and i don´t really know any of the new cards, abilities, and playing styles; and it all seems so different.
Is there anything i could watch/read/play =P to get an understanding of the actual metagame?
thanks

shrug, I mostly think of sets in terms of limited. Constructed formats tend to run together for me since I don't play T2, and I love every block format regardless. For booster draft, Mirrodin was definitely one of the most skill-testing formats as pick orders were so variable, and for rochester it was probably the best limited format ever.

I still don't understand who thought that was a good idea. Take out one of the most skill-dependent formats ever, and replace it with...Two-Headed Giant?

Mirrodin Limited was actually pretty good. As broken as Affinity was in Constructed, it was well-designed for Limited, because you couldn't build your deck such 90% of it was artifacts.

People of course forget that thanks to the absolute house that Affinity was in Constructed.

yea affinity was ridiculous but i think the format was FUN. i mean there was so much hate for affinity that it sorta kinda but not really balanced out. but everything was overpowered and DRAWING SO MANY CARDS was epic fun. idk maybe it was just me.

There are usually a few threads that pop up here and there around the time of prereleases and events like Nationals. Attempts at solid threads generally fail because a lot of us are on-and-off players, so we get lulls of several months where people aren't really interested in the constructed formats. Personally, I'd try to necro one of the old threads, seeing as there are enough of them.

The Wizards MTG website has a lot of fluff, but they do a decent job when it comes to tournament coverage. I generally ignore the articles (even good writers like Mike Flores end up having to water down their content for the audience there), but I do check event lists, match videos, and deck tech occasionally.

Other sites of interest:
Deckcheck.net - Decklists from various events. Obviously a netdecker's dream, but is much more useful than that.

ChannelFireball.net - Weekly articles by some fairly good pros, plus draft videos. Personally, I found some of the draft videos to be a decent way to get a feel for Limited card evaluation.

StarCityGames.net - Another site that has articles by professional players, but most of the ones worth reading are Premium, which means without a subscription, you can't read them till they're a month out of date. Some of the older articles are good for learning basic magic theory (card advantage, approaches to building sideboards, etc.), but I think with a site revamp, they took out their list of must-read theory articles.

Magic.Tcgplayer.com - Different site, different writers. The only writer I read regularly there is Mike Flores, but someone else's style might be up your alley.

Aside from those, several pros keep blogs that can be worth reading for random deck tech and ideas. That's more personally interesting than generally useful, though.
