It'll be what it'll be, and no matter what, there will be a vocal minority which will cry about it not meeting their personal near-impossible expectations. WoW is a classic example, with all of the changes they've done over the years, there has been many people who love them, and many people who hate them, with such a high player base, they just cant make the game perfect for everybody. I personally have a lot of faith in what Blizzard do, I read the new additions and changes to the game, and some i was a bit unhappy with at first, but then i realise that this is just the way things evolve, it'd be boring to be exactly like every other RPG out there, and it'd be stupid to be a D2 clone with updated graphics. Blizzard hasnt let me down yet, and i dont imagine i will be let down with Diablo 3 either.

If there wasn't RMAH everyone would still buy items for real money. It would be as required as usually in diablo games and still be breaking gamerules. That's what I call absurd tho.

Numerous games have proven that there is still a huge market for 100% online games, and it's big enough that you can ignore the pure offline crowd and still make a crap load of profit. As long as this fact remains true, "always online" games will continue. I guess I just learned to accept it. I've been through all the stages of grief: denial, anger, yadda yadda. I'm just gonna stop raging and have fun with it. Games companies aren't gonna stop just because of hardcore internet nerds yelling at them. I think of Diablo's always-online feature as due to the inevitable rampant cheating, not so much for DRM purposes. It's quite possibly the same "security reasons" they won't have mod support. If people never have access to character files, it'll be harder to hack them. Actually I'm kind of surprised that they bothered saying they have a singleplayer mode since it's the same exact thing as logging in and making a private game on battle.net... which was always my preferred mode of "singleplayer" anyway. Dunno who Blizzard is kidding though. There will be cracks that add offline modes. Anyone who wants to play it offline will be able to do so, likely at the cost of great effort on their part, a loss of goodwill towards Blizzard, and an uptick in piracy.

He didn't remember the exact date though, said he'd look it up and get back to me when I catch up with him (whenever I get to where he was, he always seems to be elsewhere though, so we'll see).

I played D2 for hundreds of hours and never paid money for any items, and I don't believe the majority of people have. The blizzard endorsed RMAH will get many more people buying items than the illegal item shops from D2. But hey, at least we wont get spammed by bots. Just curious, but what exactly is the downside for you to random people buying items? Keep in mind that people can only sell items they've found, in other words Blizzard isn't selling items directly. You can choose never to use the RMAH or even the gold AH if you want your characters to remain "pure".

Everyone that is complaining about the item shop has no idea about the extent of "gold farmers" in WoW and D2 etc.

From what I gather, if you die in PvE in HC mode, you lose all your items. But what about if you die in the PvP arenas? Will the HC mode players be differentiated from the normal mode players in the PvP arenas? Won't be "death" just a Knock out or whatever they want to call it
