Quake Live is pretty much dying, infact in the competitive scene, it has been dropped from IEM and ESWC: http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=2101917. Not enough spectators watching the streams and play quake. id doesn't seem to give a crap about QL advertisement and post worthless update. Also, new players never have a chance to enjoy the game since the learning curve is brutal and they resort to playing something easier like COD or Halo .
when people in this thread say quake is dead what do they mean ? Just the competitive scene or the game in general ?
download a pros config as far as settings goes especially visual these are all the best. getting used to bindigs might be hard but you can redefine keys just keep every weapons on separates keys.
tips for beginners: shows some respect. dont cry. dont quit from the match. be glad a better player wasting his time on you. you will have no chance for months if not a year, no matter how hard u try or how much u practice so try to always keep your head up.
quake is dead because the game is too hard and there isnt new players. the game is poorly advertised and not supported by the developer causing viewer number are low and tournaments started to dropping quake because of that. but quake was dead aswell many times in the past, its pretty much alive. you will have no problem finding a game in 2 mins if ure from europe.
First time playing Quake Live today and I was pretty impressed by how fun it is to be running around so fast hopping all over shooting stuff. Never did want to check it out until now and I gotta admit its pretty damn hard to actually get shots on the bots for newbs like me I was surprised by that lol. Can definitely see why so many people have enjoyed the games over the years, think I'll buy all the old Quake games on Steam sometime. :D

The problem for this game, that I love, is that the learning curve is so brutal for newcomers. It's harder than strarcraft and the scene is small, which makes it even harder. It's sad that games like CoD and Halo is played competitively over a game like Quake, which is much more suited for it.

If Quake 5 came out and was made with esports in mind like Starcraft 2 was I'm sure it would become an extremely popular competitive FPS. The same thing happened with Brood War, the community outside of Korea was tiny and the tournaments extremely small scale but when Starcraft 2 arrived there was a large boom because a lot of new players and returning players felt like it was a fresh start. The biggest problem with Quake is there is no influx of newer players to the scene.
It's true that the learning curve in Quake is extremely steep and it's very hard to just jump into Quake 3/Live at this point. If a new Quake were to come out it will give newer players the feeling that they aren't too late to the party.
We do need a real competitive FPS to take over from Halo and Call of Duty, they are jokes, but it's up to a developer to step up and make a game for the esport community.
When people claim that QuakeLive / Quake in general is dying, they pretty much mean the eSports scene. To tell the truth ID Software doesn't give a fuck about the game, and they have pretty much ignored most of the community's hopes and requests for QL. QuakeCon is coming up, and most likely it will end up like last year: bad streams / no streams at all, sick amount of delays, no VODs and weird tournament structures with bad choice of maps. Both duel and TDM grand finals are played in two parts, first map from both, and then they have to make room for Brink finals which will be played in full. Why? Because ID really seems to care only about the money, at the expense of the players support.
Within the last few months more and more tournament organisations have decided to drop QL from their schedule (IEM for example), and going with a pace like this, there won't be any of the big tournaments left within one year.
I've been such a die hard fan and player of Quake since ages ago, and i'd hate to see it go away. QL doesn't have any competitors on the 1v1 FPS field, and they could easily dominate the scene by doing small fixes and actually opening up their ears.
Yeah, too bad they actually failed to do what they attempted: the original QuakeWorld gameplay was watered down (less explosion concussion, watered down weapons and addition of abysmal strafe jumping mechanics) and the game right now is not even as popular as the original QuakeWorld, not to mention its client development is ages behind Ezquake and FTEQW.

I disagree. The level at the low tier QL servers is pretty low.. a guy who has some basic experience with the "tactical" shooters could easily hold his own there, without coming in contact with the brutality of veteran players.
The problem with Quake is a different sort. It is the structure of tension build up and release. As any entertainment, the key component to enjoying it is having pressure build up in low intensity time (like early game of starcraft, being dead in cs and most of cs round time where there is no action) and increase until reaching the culmination of action where it is released and the result takes place.
Quake by its very premise doesnt have this structure of tension that other games do. Instead it is all action all the time, except for the clan arena game type. and as such its popularity is limited.
I'm having a really hard time finding out any quake live information/stream link/schedule for Dreamhack Valencia..the "festival schedule" on their site is in swedish or something so it's hard to decipher..plus it doesnt seem to include everything (where's the sc2 matches?) http://www.dreamhack.se/DHS11/programme/festival-schedule/

Late response, but I disagree wholeheartedly with this. One of the many great things about Quake (duel) is that it can be played in a number of ways: Fast paced, back and forth, or slow and methodical with a build up. Opposed to say, Starcraft, where generally there is always a build up at the beginning and no tension besides the spectator knowing what may come by seeing both build orders, a Quake duel could open up and there could be instant action right away and it could be non-stop till the end of the duel. Or there could be no action and nothing but item and map control where neither player commits to any battle for basically the whole duel until one deciding frag, hence build up of tension
Prime examples of this would be watching a Cypher vs Avek duel where they usually play like two boxers standing in the middle of the ring exchanging punches the whole time, constant action all the time. But then you could have a match like Cooller vs Rapha where they are more like two chess players meticulously plotting every action and the game could end up into a 0-0 overtime or a 1-0 or 2-0 victory that is decided in the last couple minutes. Matches like that are extremely intense to watch where every item pickup and every little bit of damage is crucial.
