I remember some russian lan last summer had 5.5k concurrent viewers and it was all in russian (no english). Maybe this is the first game where there are more people watching than actually playing XD
ql is certainly not doing well atm but you are far from the truth anyway. there still is a core community. just have a look at www.qlranks.com for example, its running since august and has tracked "22064 duelers and 292992 duels."
tdm is still alive aswell with a well run nationscup, hoq, esl and cb online leagues and the upcoming dh lan.
things are looking really bad for NA though i gotta admit :/

Its current player base is probably in the hundreds. It is 100% dead, and will never be revived. It's just too dated and bland compared to anything new, and rage/id/etc won't make a new one that's worth a crap.
I can understand dated, but bland? Quake is anything but bland. Best FPS gameplay you can get imo.
I agree.....but after 12 years of it, I need something new. I think I've seen/done just about every shot/play possible on some of the more popular maps like dm6 and ztn.
Hmm what would you suggest then. Quake doesn't exactly have a linear improvement model like Starcraft. Quake Live is already an improved version of Quake 3. I don't really see how Id can improve on the game except if they release and cycle new maps non stop every few months.
That's why it needs a complete redesign that isn't gay, like Q4. Q4 would have been received much better if it didn't slow the game down while simultaneously adding basically nothing new but graphics. And QL is dead, simple as that. It still is "popular" competitively, because it has one of the best top tiers in all of gaming, but casually, it is very, very dead.
Did they release a terrible update recently? I used to get a constant 125 fps on this machine when I played a lot back in 2010, and when I play now I fluctuate from 60-125 fps. It's very annoying and it's keeping me from playing QL properly.
Edit Oh, enabling threaded optimization on the Nvidia control panel fucks it up. nvm

I just played my first few games of Quake Live and...I...I can't believe how good it is! Whenever there was a clash between me and another player or two, it was so exhilarating and so intense that when they occurred it felt as if the world around me didn't even exist. It made me completely forget that there was a keyboard and a mouse underneath my fingertips, that I was staring at a screen, and that there were people moving back and forth behind me. I love how all the weapons feel, they all seem excellently crafted, fair, and deadly in the right situations. The only thing that's annoying me is strafe jumping, I can't seem to grasp the mechanics of it yet.

This is for Q3 Defrag but the same principles apply (mostly, overbounces don't exist in QL).

ESL added Quake Live Duel to their Versus-Matchmaking System. Maybe give it a try. It is new and to work it needs to reach a critical mass of players. http://www.esl.eu/eu/versus/
Not expecting any surprises from groups B or D, pretty cut and dry. I haven't been watching for a while, has toxjq been taking things seriously enough to be the number 1 tournament threat like he used to be?

He's good but I don't know if he's a huge threat to the top tier ala rapha, strenx, av3k etc.

This game definitely makes me realize how bad I'm at it. That combined with all the Tier4 people coming to just troll around when I'm trying to learn how to play make me frustrated as hell from time to time.
I started QL just now and well... Duels aren't easy. Fun as hell, but definitely not easy.
Some hopefully not-map-specific questions(If you need a map to base on, let's say Blood Run as that's where I have played the most duels in):
How should I play when I have the advantage g.e. when I get a frag and stabilize? What about when the exact opposite happens and I have a disadvantage(Big enough for me to not rush in for a frag right after spawn)?
