IdrA Interview for GSL:

+ Show Spoiler +

- How do you feel about making it through with all wins?
▲ I'm happy I made it to the tournament with defeating everyone.

- You've been doing well in StarCraft II tournaments
▲ I got 2nd in IEM in Germany, and before that I won the King of Kings End of Beta Tournament.

- You're still CJ player as far as I know, did you have any problems entering the league?
▲ I was in CJ, but I left already. My contract ends the 31st of this month, and since it's almost over, I joined GSL.

- Have you decided a new team to join?
▲ I want to join a team not associated with KeSPA. I don't have a specific team yet.

- You were Terran in SC1, why did you switch to Zerg?
▲ I thought about changing race in SC1 since Terran didn't fit me, and I felt that Zerg fit my style better than Protoss. That's why I chose Zerg.

- What do you think is attractive about the Zerg race?
▲ I like playing games having good economy and large armies, and I think Zerg fits that description the best.

- What do you think about the balance?
▲ It's difficult to defend early rushes as Zerg, but I think the balance is getting better after every patch.

- Where are you living in Korea?
▲ I'm still in CJ house, but I'm leaving soon. I think I'll stay with a friend until I find a team.

- Your goals and determination for this GSL
▲ I hope the Korean fans enjoy my games. I'm honored to have a spot in the GSL, and I think it's going to be fun, so look forward to it.

He is leaving CJ, but it does make sense. I wonder what team he will join. Aren't oGs and Prime the only dedicated SCII teams?

Edit: More importantly...IdrA looks baller.

I guess he is limited by Kespa, so moving on is probably a good thing.

Hopefully he can make a salary soon commensurate with his profile in SC2. I'm sure he'll be one of, if not the, top player in GSL.

I hope he can win anything in SC2 just because he has shown us time and time again how much dedication this man brings to the table.

I don't think any one of us realizes how hard these years must have been on IdrA, so seeing him rippin the entire scene apart makes me personally happy for him.

Here's to you Greg, give em all hell.

Idra is a happy man!

Im kinda glad he left CJ, maybe he'll get more out of some other team like oGs/prime etc. He was kinda lonely in Sc2 while playing in Entus.

Gl in GSL!

you dont join a team and then get good, you get good and then join a team.

That's the problem the OP wants to highlight. The infrastructure to get good in NA is not as good in Korea, and this creates a selection bias. There aren't too many 15+ year olds in NA that can just turn their life into full time gaming, unless they already have a lot of money or a very supportive family. The concept of B-teams here doesn't really exist.

I mean if we look at the top level pros on the scene today that support themselves only with SC2, a lot of them are there because they had the first mover advantage (HuK) or had the chance to develop before (you). This is made worse by the fact that a lot of tournaments are mostly invite-based.

how do you think i got that chance to develop? i ignored school and didnt have a social life for 2 years in order to win a tournament and move to korea at 18 to sit in a house and play starcraft1 with 0 return for another 3 years
huk played sc2 all day on a shitty computer during the beta when there was no money in it and did everything he could to get to korea and then spent a year+ practicing in a korean house.

most a team pros dont make salaries in korea. none of the b teamers do, the bottom of the barrel doesnt get to live in the house, they just get the priviledge of playing with the team if theyre good enough for people to want to practice with them. you have to sacrifice pretty much everything while you're on your way up. koreans are better because hundreds of them are willing to do it, a handful of nonkoreans are.

I'll pass on ads, and I'll help E-sports flourish in the process. Things evolve with love and care, not money.

You are endorsing a money farming machine. Not Esports.

Wake up children. Block ads. They will continue to operate regardless.

fuck you you obnoxious little imbecile. you're entitled to watch everything for free? and you have the nerve to act superior because of it? you cant afford to allow an ad to run at absolutely no cost to you in order to give the people providing entertainment for you, the people who esports does not exist without, money? you're a leach on the community. get the fuck out.

I fail to see how mutas don't work vs terran mech. I think that a majority of Zerg players make the following mistakes with their mutas:

1) They directly engage multiple thors
2) They are afraid of killing missile turrets (more on this below)
3) When the opponent's army attacks, they run back and fight it

The conclusion I came to from testing was that Mutas are the answer to terran Mech. If the Terran player attacks, just have a base race. You will both end up losing your base, but the mutas can fly around the map preventing terran from expoing while zerg can continue to expo and stay alive while thors are too slow to prevent it.

Zerg players throw a panic fit when the Terran places missile turrets and then attacks. Once you get 6+ mutas, you can drop missile turrets without a scratch. Just drop the turrets. Zerg players are WAY too scared of missile turrets.

You can win a fight vs mutas with thors but if the fight doesn't occur that advantage is completely negated.

the only way to win was to either have your opponent not execute it correctly, either in terms of mechanics or not using sensor towers or ravens, or to simply be way better than them.

easy, if the rest of the world doesn't care about your major sports, like american football, basketball, - who plays baseball anyway - and in regards to icehockey .. yeah go usa... hmm... wait a second...

the US is pretty good in soccer considering none of the best athletes in the US play soccer. i'm amazed we even have guys playing for club teams in europe when they are clearly second or third tier athletes in the US.

yes well we are good at cricket, football, rugby and darts :D. We have mad diversity too tbh.

And you also have to realise that practically none of the guys who play american football or basketball would be good for football, and not a huge amount of baseball players would necessarily be great at football.

Did they have any real evidence to support otherwise? It's a part of science to have a certain amount of doubt and uncertainty when making these kinds of observations. I can see you did a great amount of Wikipedia research. But really now, put yourself in their shoes? What kind of empirical data did they have? It's not like they could send up their own satellites or anything. The best they could do was Galileo's telescope, which could only see as far as Jupiter. How were they to really know? So maybe you should consider that before going trolling on people's posts. Copernicus was a stepping stone to achieving where we were today.

whos trolling who?

Do not mock the Lord. You know little of the danger you invite.

Galatians 6: 7
"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap."
Thus spake the Lord.

To those that trust in Him, lend me your ears and give heed to His words:
1 Corinthians 6:18
"Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body."
To sin against your body is to sin against the temple of God. Do not consent to the wickedness of the Gentiles. Guard your thoughts and your actions carefully and you will be rewarded.

Rewarded with what? Because sex seems like a pretty good reward.

It's this really cool theme park in the sky. Like disney world, but way better. getting a ticket is really hard though, cuz there's like a really long line with all these gift shops and food stands along the way, but if you buy anything from those stands then you dont get to buy a ticket. but it's hard to not buy from the stands cuz all the salesman are like marketing masters so you're like "omgmusthaznao".

but the theme park has everything you could ever want and more. if you can't imagine something better than sex then i pity your sad sad imagination.

This is a great analogy (albeit a bit unrealistic in this world, since everyone is more like buy as much as you can so we get rich) to represent this belief... I'm going to use this from now on, if you don't mind, when I'm trying to explain it to other people.

its actually a terrible analogy

a more fitting one would be some people wanted to make money so they told you theres this awesome theme park but you cant see it until you buy the tickets and to buy the tickets you have to do whatever they tell you to, no matter how retarded it is. and then once you buy the tickets you die without having led a fulfilling existence because you devoted yourself to a bunch of idiotic bullshit.

now THAT was a good analogy.

rush to obs and warpgates once you know they arent proxy raxing. the combination lets you come out ahead vs anything, if theyre rushing hard you charge out a couple of immortals, along with warp gate units, and then get to collosus, if theyre teching you can expand and then pick a unit path that counters their tech, if they expand you can double expand. given that you're always gonna end up with an early game advantage playing like that its just a matter of macroing well.

its best to rely on collosus to deal heavy damage since they take the least damage from emp. always have sentries with every group of units and put up shield before engaging. put your units on at least 3 different mixed hotkey groups and spread them out. really if terran isnt allining theyre not going to be able to be aggressive vs collosus/chargelot/sentry/stalker for a long ass time, just abuse that fact and by the time they do have a respectable force you can have 4 bases 2 robos and 10 warpgates.
terran should not ever win the matchup without getting lucky or having something stupid happen early.

You dont need to proxy rax to rush a teching toss. I've said this in other threads but still seems people dont do it. All you need to do is make ur supply depot+rax down ramp( only requires 2 buildnings to block ramp then). Often this completly denys any protoss scout, and he wont have any idea what you are doing.

If you from there go 2-3 reactor mass marine, he wont know and will die if he techs unless he gets forge and few cannons/sentry before you reach his base. The mass marine completely DESTROYS stalker/zealot/immortal and he wont have colossus by the time you rush. Only way I lost doing this is to people who make cannons not reachable from down ramp, and cuts ur army in two with forcefield when u try break the ramp.

Done this to 1900+ elo platinum players and they usually stand no chance, seems kind of OP atm...
if all you're making is marines then all p has to do is stall for collosus, which comes pretty fast off 1 gate robo and stalling isnt hard at all given force field. sure you can catch some people off guard with that but its not a sure fire counter to all tech builds.

also if you do that theyll see the reactor on your wallin barracks, which gives away some kind of marine rush and lets them cheat early since they dont have to fear reapers or go immortal for marauders.

I can push out around 5.15 with 10+ marines , and reach enemy base 30 sec later usually. Then have 6marines or 4 marines/1marauder coming from my base every 20 sec. How long does it take to get one colossus out if u have to make sentry while doing it? None of those i have played yet have made it to colossus without making any cannons.

dunno, how long does it take your marines to jump over a force field?

Maybe because your units operate between 5 and 3 range with no utility functions at all? Of course for 150/150 you can make that 6 to 3 range. Maybe its because zerg cant create impassable terrain to prevent your opponents ranged army from forming a concave? Who knows. Maybe this mythical micro you envision pro-zergs having doesn't actually exist and when 20 stalkers are bearing down on your natural and you don't have the option to retreat to a forcefielded/blocked off ramp, maybe just maybe attacking with your hydralisks is the best option. we have no zerg players in general. who used to win as zerg when zerg was OP? like dimaga, who else ? haypro and zpux? i cant even name any other zergs that were on top of their game... we simply have few zergs participating in each tour and i think thats a bigger factor than the actual imbalance

i almost wanna switch to zerg just to show it is possible, its not a coincidence dimaga is by far best zerg atm, he simply has alot more skills than the other zergs. i pity these lower level players that blame their losses on imbalance when dimaga still manages to win. we have 30 terrans who can fight nicely on the top in tvt but who can compete in zvz? the skill gap is huge there and so few players...

youd be gold league if you played zerg
not just as a switch, if youd been playing zerg since the beginning youd still be gold right now

On January 13 2010 16:19 KwarK wrote:
I'm an athiest. I'm an athiest because I believe that things that happen have a rational cause and even when that cause is unknown there is no shame in admitting ignorance. Therefore I don't see any room for belief in a supernatural being because there's no evidence for one, nor any niche for it to fill. I can see why an ancient agricultural society would need a god to guarantee the rains and the harvest but we have weathermen for that now, the unknowns in my life (such as creation etc) aren't issues that hold any relevance to my life. Anyway, this is besides the point. Suffice to say I am a rational athiest.

However when I run out of alternatives I often pray. I wasn't brought up as a Christian (my school was an Anglican school but almost all British schools have some religious affiliation because they evolved out of a charitable system and the Government likes leeching money out of religion without actually giving them anything in return) and have never believed in God. He just never seemed particularly likely or relevant or whatever. So I don't pray out of habit or anything like that. Anyway, when I pray I generally get what I pray for. In fact, I very rarely don't.

I ought to clarify here. I don't pray for the big stuff, that'd be silly. That stuff bears almost no relation to my day to day life and would be hard to pray sincerely. I mean obviously I'd like world peace but I don't pray for it (although maybe I should). Rather, when there's a part of my life I really want specific localised help with and I've exhausted every option within my power I generally talk to God. I'm usually frank with him, explaining that I'm asking him because I might as well use his benevolence if it doesn't cost me anything, explaining that he won't get any belief out of it etc. I just talk about what I want, why I want it, what I've done to help myself out, what I'd appreciate him doing for me and then thank him and go on with my life.

The latest answered prayer set me musing on the subject and I figured I might as well blog it because I'm bored.
Also, if you're reading this, thanks God (whichever you are). If you ever want the favour repaid then feel free to materialise and present me with proof of your existence along with proof of my sanity and the reality of the experience. Then I'll be happy to help out.

alright. my brother has a mental illness that ranges somewhere between bipolar and schizophrenia. the disease has caused him to act crazy and make too many connections. we put him on drugs but he stopped taking them multiple times. our family watched him carefully and made him take tranquilizers, and he was completely unable to think and function at times. it turned out that we just had to let psychiatry take its course over time, because after 5 violent incidents and 6 months of living with him while psychotic, he came around and started a successful career...now he's married and pursuing his masters' in statistics while working.

so here's the deal. over the course of dealing with this shit, you have to maintain a positive outlook or you get really depressed, because it is a really bleak situation. I knew I would have to deal with a lot of bullshit when talking/driving/interacting with someone who is clearly not sane but I stuck through it because I had the hope of eventually reclaiming a loved one. Every conversation when he was on excessive tranquilizers would tear me up because I saw what he was reduced to; but every conversation when he was manic was complete hell. Oh and btw, the system of mental hospitals in the united states is fucking horrible.

And the worst part was: you can't talk a manic out of his delusions. You can't explain things to them because they are making connections in their head at a rate much faster than you, and have memories that are just straight different from what happened. We were told by a social worker that we were supposed to become his "allies" in his illness and not reject his ideas outright but try to convince him of the truth slowly while overtly agreeing with him. So we worked through it, and we prayed in order to keep ourselves from crushing despair. We had to arbitrarily believe it would get better in the future, or it would feel a lot worse every time we tried to deal with it. Make sense?

god didnt do jack shit. psychiatry did.

Gandhi and Hitler had this in common: they truly believed in their cause, and were willing to do everything possible to bring about their perceived ideal realities in the world. Would you risk being Hitler for a shot at being Gandhi? This is the path of extremes that you're talking about.

thats a pretty bad example. they both succeeded quite spectacularly up to a point, it was the ideals they were trying to implement that made one bad and one good.

On January 23 2010 02:18 ilistis wrote:
are all those guys virgins?

Actually I find that us playing Starcraft doesn't really hinder our sexual lives all that much, especially relative to any other activity that we could participate in instead. Although Starcraft has not been proven to have a positive effect in encounters with the other gender, I find that it does not have a negative effect either. According to recent studies, the average college student has sex on occasion, perhaps even leaning toward not having much sex at all. So, those involved with Princeton Starcraft can only be a bit below average (at minimum), or higher. Now considering that the majority of us are rather popular with women compared to your stereotypical nerd gamer, I find your conclusion to be a little ridiculous. Not to mention that Princeton is full of nerds, which helps the gamers at Princeton specifically even more. On what grounds do you make your claim?

And anyway, why does it matter if people are virgins or not? I'd say about half or more of college age people have had a chance to have sex, and some choose to do it, some choose not to. And those of us who do chose to have sex, more still refrain from bragging about it and making childish comments that reflect immaturity. Some people who haven't had sex also choose to pretend like they have, because, who can really verify whether or not someone has had sex or not except for the parties involved? And even if Person B denies having sex with Person A, Person B may just be embarrassed. So there's no easy way of proving or disproving whether or not even real-life friends have or have not had sex. And on the internet, well, that's even harder, isn't it?

I could tell you I'm not a virgin right now. How would you react? You probably wouldn't believe me, even if I was telling the truth. You wouldn't even know if I was telling the truth or not though. So it wouldn't matter whether or not you believed me, because you could never know.

So... why bring it up? Are you a virgin? Don't answer it though, because I don't care.

Now please, gtfo of* our thread.

wouldnt it have been easier to just say yes?

You're definitely correct in that JD is just as 'bad' as Flash is, however, he is at least somewhat charismatic, he has a much better understanding of how to communicate with fans and just plain being an ambassador of SC, just like Boxer was/is. You let your personal opinion decide weather or not BigT is featured or not. In my opion BigT has Great stream quality(one of the best), Awesome commentary, Great game play(talks about why or why he didn't do something, and discusses his BO) this i never see with half the featured streamer, and Bigt is one of the few that will sit and talk with the viewers. Heck none of the featured streamers talk with their viewers as much as BigT does(excluding Day9).

But again this is my opinion and shouldn't lead to him being featured.

What you should look at is Does BigT bring in viewers? Which he does, and i have notice that BigT has more viewers then most of the featured streamers that you have made featured. This is about expanding E-sports not deciding who is your best friend and who you do not like personally.

But again this is just me talking and hoping E-sports get big in NA. But it gets hard when people let their personal opinion speak for them.

if esports is gonna get big its not gonna be because of people like bigt

did I do it right?

in all honesty, the hype is just gone from HDH2. The first one worked cuz they did it in a sunday afternoon with no other events on and advert'd the hell out of it, then we realized then better commentators started casting games, and now we have gigantically large scale events like IEM, MLG, GSL, WCG, Blizzcon, etc. week after week.

I already was telling people as the patch came out how ZvT would end up, and it's finally there.

Every high level TvZ is an aggro all-in, or gimmick in order to not go late game versus Zerg (back to early beta status).

Do not expect it to change. And do not expect Terrans to win even with this stuff. It's not just a trend - it was inevitable. After all of these nerfs to Terran, not addressing Zerg's late game macro, which always has been invincible...

Except in the era of tvz mech. That's when Zergs whined because they were mad Terran could actually play a late game management game and not automatically lose. Although, just as an aside, mech was imba back then. Anyways

Terrans basically already exhausted all of the options for attempting macro management play...to no avail. A management game versus Zerg in lategame is never an equal game.

Foxer made marines popular TvZ, sure, but what he really made popular (if you want to call it a "trend" or "metagame shift") is the mass early marines to make it so you don't have to go late game versus Zerg.

People say I whine and am "arrogant" in my balance analysis...but I'm pretty sure the people that haven't hopped on board the ZvT ANALYSIS wagon are the ones being arrogant now.

How can people looking at balance or GSL games honestly look at the games and assess that "pros can't macro lategame with Terran," or "Terran players are bad," or "this is all gimmicky stuff."

To all of those people I say - get over yourselves. You can pretend Zerg is as underpowered as you want or that mules are too good (LOL). But look at the fucking games.

Every Terran, even goddamn intotherainbow, is doing marine/scv all-in variations. These players are not stupid. They understand the state of the game.

So please, especially general forum SC2 posters, stop acting like the progamers don't know what they're doing, or, in the more funny posts, acting like Terran's are abusing some mystical strategy that is uber good!

It's not. At all. All of these scv/marine all-ins are to completely avoid lategame.

Expect more of them. ALOT MORE.
Good day!

and yes, I know I take a lot of flak for being outspoken on the boards about this stuff. That's fine. Bring it. But I wonder if people can manage to attack my arguments instead of me personally.

If you honestly feel Terran can compete with Zerg in a late game macro management game, I would be happy to see your arguments. I'm sure you'll have plenty of GSL games to back those up as well (LOL).

One more note to readers - if it seems like I've repeated myself over the course of the last 3 weeks or so...guess what? It's because everything I said back then applied, but the game was still developing up to this point, so people were quick to bash me instead of looking at the game and analyzing it more objectively.

hey avilo
you lose because you're fucking awful
not because your race is hard

Hello, that's debateable, you lose to players you shouldn't because you're immature and stubborn, so what?

Put up some arguments, or do something more useful, like practice ZvZ for GSL.

you're impossible to argue with because you just say things that are flat out wrong since you approach the game believing you aren't terrible and thus it confounds you when you lose.
'2 rax pressure is easy to deal with' 'tvz late game is impossible' no, your micro is bad and you dont know how to macro.

I think avilo's style of arguing invalidates his points. basically he writes some stuff that is correct but then as a direct consequence of blatant exaggeration it actually becomes incorrect. (as "zerg is advantaged if they reach the lategame unpunished" is a very different statement from "zerg is invincible unless they're killed early". )

and watching someone butcher their own valid arguement like this is to me quite saddening.

the fact is that the new special abilities of all the races (queen+ creep bonus for zerg, mule for terran and chrono boost for protoss) are all overpowered at certain stages of the game.
mules are ridiculously good in situations where both players are short on peons (meaning that terran players should inherently be aiming for a low-econ style of play.. this is something that has been mentioned many times, but apparently not sufficiently grasped by some - 50 peons vs 50 peons means that each mule is hardly of any importance, 6 peons vs 6 peons means one mule gives one player twice the income.)
creep suddenly being a resource means that zerg units have to be either too good on creep or not good enough away from creep - now that zergs are finally starting to do a good job creeping we see the consequences. additionally, this obviously is a lategame boost because more creep will normally be spread the further into the game we go.
queens being worth more than a hatchery in production capabilities, and being able to make infinite larvea in late game, is definitely overpowered in a situation where both players are at limit and where both players have a lot of resources saved up. there's no question about this.

as for protoss, chrono boost has left protoss fucked over because the one area where chrono boost really shines - allowing them to tech to something or attain a unit combination really really fast - has been nerfed through increased build time or nerfing of those units.. in late game it's practically worthless compared to what mules and queens can do.

but, this is nothing new to the starcraft franchise. for years of brood war the counter to mass carrier in tvp was "don't let him get there". a mere couple months ago the counter to a turtled 200 200 terran in zvt sc2 was "don't let him get there". on destination in bw the exact same scenario also had the same counter, "don't let him get there". prior to 3/3 200/200 mech becoming popular in bw, terrans on the other hand had to play a "don't let him get there" style of play with regard to zergs having 4+ gas mining with defiler tech.

so basically, deal with it. if you're unhappy with your chosen race happening to be one that needs to rely upon harassment and which thrives in low-econ style games, change race. the game is a couple months old and is aiming at a lifespan nearing eternity. when races are as different as they are in bw or sc2, they will be stronger in different scenarios. zerg's biggest singular advantage compared to terran or protoss is their ability to spend huge amounts of resources in a short amount of time, terran has the advantage that it's impossible to attack them cost-efficiently and that all of their crap can be healed or repaired quickly, protoss has the ability to warp units anywhere on the map.. avilo has a point but he's arguing it in such an off-putting way that he's actually de-convincing people and I can't say I'm very sympathetic towards him.

no he's actually just flat out wrong

Hi Greg,

I'd like to give a brief introduction of myself. Without disclosing any personal details, I would like to point out that I'm a final year law student in one of the top Australian law schools. I have secured a few internships in the past two years and will be entering one the top firms in Australia in 2012.

The reason I point this out is to separate myself from the general demographic population on this site consisting of adolescents and teenagers who are both immature and quick to judge. I see myself as a well rounded individual.

Similarly to you, I find it unnecessary to moderate my language and my wording to attempt to be modest. The fact is that what you achieve means a lot more than how many faces you can make smile. As we both know, the truth can often hurt.

To give you a little perspective, I am not a good Starcraft II player. I've played a total of 200 games over the last few weeks. I have not learnt the proper hot keys or any strategies. I did however manage to get to platinum with about a 60% win ratio over a span of two days. The purpose of my communication with you is not to discuss aspects of the game but to give some constructive criticisms of your attitude and work ethic. What I say henceforth may not be useful but I hope it does give some further perspective to your current training regime.

First of all, I'd like to give my opinion in that I do not think that you should be coaching. This distracts from your training and will affect your time allocation for personal development. While there is some correlation between teaching others and self realization of mistakes, the benefit of doing so is greatly outweighed by the fact you are teaching material that you have already consolidated. This will subconsciously tend to prevent you from challenging your own build orders, and understanding of the game.

My train of thought derives from the fact that a good teacher generally must have a uncontested view that what he is teaching is correct. Given the perpetual changes in the dynamics of the game, I think having this view will tend to prevent you from improving. The extra time can be used for more useful things such as studying new concepts, replays and personal reflection. Keep in mind how none of the coaches of any proteams ever take dual roles and no coach is ever a good player. In my opinion, you should not be continuing coaching despite the monetary rewards involved.

I take the same view in terms of casting. I personally enjoy your commentary more than any other of your fans. I find them one of the most insightful things that I can learn other than playing the game. However, even more than hearing you commentate, I want to see you win the next GSL. Casting will give away your mentality of thinking, opening up the space for potential opponents with access to a translator to pick away at your tactics. I advise against it.

More importantly though Greg, I feel that you need a competent coach that can constantly discuss build orders and timings with you. Part of your failure in Starcraft 1, along with Ret and even Chinese players like Luo Xian (Legend), was that within the progaming houses, there were language barriers. However, that in itself would not have been bad, if not for the prejudicial views that Koreans hold of foreigners. This doesn't come as a surprise considering that Koreans are the most xenophobic people in the world. They are just very good at hiding it. To that extent, I can fully understand why you choose not to share tactics with other Korean gamers.

Many foreigners so far are too naive or are too insecure to accept this as a reality. I remember that when Luo Xian was playing for SKT T1, he often beat Stork, Bisu, Boxer in games. He had a particularly good in house win ratio against Fantasy in practice games. In an interview, he raised that he used to own Fantasy in almost every game. Despite this, the reason he gave of leaving the scene was that the Korean coaches helped players like Fantasy reach their potential by nurturing them, giving them consistent advice and pointing out tiny details and weaknesses in their game.

LX felt neglected and especially frustrated that, whether it was because he was a foreigner or whether it was because he couldn't speak the language, he received none of that treatment and in return found there to be no need to stay in the country.

Back to the point, I think the reason why Starcraft 1 progamers succeeded to some extent was due to the help of coaching staff. A person has only so much time to both practice and produce working build orders. Having a coach allowed the player to focus on executing the mechanics and the intricate timings that are necessary. The coach would then take on the role of pointing out the flaws of the player that may not be known to the player themselves. It was also for the coach to suggest possible new surprise builds and outstanding situations that may occur. Absent of a coach, a player needs to prorate their time more strictly. This detracts overall from the quality of the training.

If we look at what history has taught us, we will see that many of the greatest achievers thrive in specialisation. Those with gifts in the field of science, engineering, law and medicine, or sports like fencing, chess, badminton, often know very little other than what they do. Those at the very apex of their chosen profession, sacrifice a great deal of their personal or academic life in pursuit of specializing in their chosen fields. Geniuses are almost always obsessive, judges often have no life other than law, and scientists are often inarticulate in expressing thought coherently other than in mathematical algorithm. You need to ask yourself Greg, what you've done to reach the 'apex' of your profession. Also ask yourself whether coaching or making streams is really going to make you win the next GSL.

As much as you might hate it, perhaps it's time to force yourself to create an extremely strict practice schedule and employ someone who you think would qualify as a competent coach. Otherwise, allocate time in the week to make a particular schedule. As much as you hate training back in the CJ house, I believe there must be some merit in practicing relentlessly the same build over and over again. In one of Nestea's interview (yes I know you don't look fondly on Nestea), he said he practiced about a hundred over games of the same build to prepare. In many sports like badminton and snooker, the same stroke is often practiced hundreds of times to promote consistency.

I enjoy watching your games and I hope you get far Greg. I hope any of these criticisms with help with your development in the game. Perhaps you, Ret, Jinro and a Protoss of your choice can form a trust between yourselves so as to improve without holding anything back. Understandably, you enjoy the publicity you are now receiving. However try not to let that get to you too much. Think only of winning and reward the fans with lip service when you take home the GSL. Good luck Idra, and I'll be continuing to support you.

sc2 requires 5 games a day and a lucky coin

Does it seem to anyone else that lowbie players always go for the easy win? 6pool, Void Ray rush, mass marines, it's just a strategy that low level players can't beat for the sake of getting out of bronze. Does it ever get better? Do you ever get past the easy win strategies to strats that feel like they take more than 1 neuron to pull off? Like a successful 3gate 1robo? Or a well played and executed 1-1-1? Instead of just this crap shoot where whoever has the sneakier strategy wins the game, but you know in the back of your mind that it would never make it past silver anyway.

I understand how people will get annoyed at this thread, but I am having a "should I even bother" moment, and I know A LOT of bronze and silver level players feel it too, where you just wonder if it's always going to be like that. Are you ALWAYS going to deal with the newbie strategies, usually executed by complete, bragging BMing jerks, and you just want to never play again after it. Or do you get to a point where people stop using that crap, because you are good enough that you need a multi-faceted strategy to win, because 1 or 2 units, or 1 concept strategies don't cut it anymore. Does it always happen, or should I just learn how to do mass reapers, or rush cloaked banshees and call it a day?

EDIT: I am going to add another note to this. What do you consider "cheap" or "lowbrow" strategies? Because of my RTS background (which is minuscule) and how I view the term "strategy", I see things like mass void rays, mass marines, anything less than 10 pool, cannon rushing, as cheesy low brow strategies. You should definitely have an early game, but I feel as though you should NEVER be able to get by with one unit. For instance, mass void rays will beat any T army if he hasn't massed either marines or vikings. In my opinion, this shouldn't be the case, but it is. How do you view it?

its just really fucking easy to lose as zerg.

Do you think that zerg is currently at a disadvantage or do you think it is a momentum race that cannot lose momentum if they want to win?

I know that you don't like to respond very often, but I would like to hear your views on the current state of the zerg race (without iNcontrol telling you to shut up like on SOTG lol)

zerg is fucking awful
clearly weakest, least reliable options early game. any viable pressure is nearly a complete allin, besides light roach aggression which is easily nullified. both t and p have lots of ways to put game ending pressure on z early and half of them arent even close to allin, and most are unscoutable and have different counters.

and the idea that z is somehow the strongest late game race is fuckin absurd. hive units are nearly useless and horribly cost inefficient unless broodlords catch them off guard. ya, you can insta remax if you're allowed to get a giant econ, but remaxing on lair units vs collosus or tank based armies hardly matters when you can trade 200/200 for a tenth of their army.

if z guesses, and guessing is required if t and p dont show a ridiculously early expansion, correctly and hits drone timings perfectly then they have a mid game advantage, but its not an advantage that can be used very well. its very easy for t or p to make themselves unkillable and head for that invincible late game army. z gets to use their unit advantage to tech towards hive, which can be nullified, or to expand a bunch so they can throw away a few extra 200/200 armies before getting rolled.

zerg is failing massively in just about every statistic besides gsl first places. the race is fucking awful. i honestly have no idea how so many people dont acknowledge it yet. zergs performance in the foreign scene is very nearly non existent. i think morrow has won one viking cup and otherwise 0 z wins since i won mlg dc. and a pitiful number of titles before that.

to be fair u cant really make alot of statistics of the foreigner scene. i think zerg is a race that simply needs more time put into it than terran for example, doesnt make it imbalanced. just compare t and p in sc1 tosses won more in the foreigner scene aswell because we dont play as much as the koreans.
talked to dimaga he has been inactive if i understood him correctly and darkforce has been busy with studies afaik like most foreigners and i well, im not good enough yet. who do you want to win in the foreigner scene? actionjesus? daboo? skruf? lol

i cant make a good statement what i think about balance since i have so much to learn still but as far as my games go and games in europe i almost hear every p/t say z is imba while all zergs around me tell p is imba

my point is, the level in europe is probably not high enough to draw fair statics from. but i think most of us has already agreed zerg needs more practice hours than a terran to win big tournaments

always such a great manner bear^^. Although I agree with most of this I think its still a lot harder to win in some aspects as zerg compared to the other races, especially at lower levels. To early though to make such broad whine posts as many zergs have though as well.

the fact that you ever win games is more than enough justification for any amount of whining

Look up "Sirlin play to win" on google. If WhiteRa was really complaining about 4gate, then he was simply being a "scrub" as defined by Sirlin's book (which is very well thought out and VERY well-written, I might add).

Don't mean to insult WhiteRa with the word "scrub", but, basically, Sirlin defines it as a player who kind of restricts himself to a certain playstyle because he thinks the game should be played a certain way, and when he loses to someone playing to win, he complains that the tactics that the winner used were "cheap". Obviously, it's not a perfect analogy since WhiteRa didn't complain by calling the 4gate "cheap" (I'm still on the fence about whether or not he was being sarcastic or actually complaining in the first place), but you can see where I'm coming from.

Yeah, I am sure every other pro is totally all like "That guy was awesome, totally outplayed me, I wish I could be like them." when they lose.

Right or not doesn't matter, it's just not how the human mind works.

Wrong, that's just not how Idra's mind works.

Watch a post-match interview of truly elite athletes like Tom Brady, Rafael Nadal, etc, they will always admit there are things they can do better (after a big win and ESPECIALLY after a big loss). The greats know there's always room to improve and that they can only control their own play, that's why they focus on their mistakes and ways to improve. The players who are busy complaining about external factors or failing to take responsibility for their own mistakes are the ones who never achieve their potential.

Those guys don't play a game where they're expected to play against average joes for practice. They're in a community where everyone (to a certain extent) is elite. You cannot compare the two without being utterly and hopelessly biased. (Which you are.)

When an athlete in any sports loses to someone who is considered a lot weaker or an underdog they certainly dont say that he is bad after they lose. Nobody ever does that in real sports...

those underdogs are still full time professional players in fields with much deeper and more developed talent pools than a 1 year old esport.

*IdrA replies to a long post about Protoss getting auto-extractors.
Show nested quote +
Hi everyone!

As previously stated in a thread (I can't find it again sorry), Protoss are having a harder time setting up defense (mainly because to have static defense you are forced to build a forge, it is not direct like bunkers or spines). They mostly have to rely on sentries and narrow chock point, which cost a lost of gas. It does not even allow you to defend, but only to avoid the fight.
Due to warp mechanism and the power of tech units, I have the feeling that Protoss should always lead the aggression during games in a different way that a big death ball or timing attacks. I think that for a long game, a Protoss should have at least 2 branches of the tech tree developed to continue being strong (and maybe win some tournaments...).

The main problem is the gas. Every tech and every unit need a lot of gas and you are force to expand to get them, on at least 3 base without being a bit all-in. 3 bases is kind of hard to defend, since you cannot really split your army.

What I'd like to have is something like an auto extractor for gas. In this way you can have the extra gas you need without investing the 400 minerals that gas be used for Zealots harass and give a little bi of ease when it comes to defend your bases. It could be something you develop through an upgrade at the core for instance (that is only used for warpgate at the time). To avoid sneaking to much auto extractor everywhere we could imagine having different level of upgrades that could allow you to morph your extractors into 1 or 2 auto extractors at a time.
This mechanism could easily be counter by a gling or a marine scouting the map periodically. It will force everyone to gain a little bit more of map control and force fight in different places. But it will allow you to have some power units that can balance you smaller main army because of the harass investment that can often not be saved.

Another thing that bother me is that is hard to have a stargate and a robo at the same time, especially early game. It is mainly because your are forced to build the core and a forge if you want some cannon if your style is based on prism harass. If we consider strategy like zealots phoenix too, it could be far more viable if we could avoid the core at the start, that is only used for warp. Constructing it in a second time, could be great to have warp and air upgrade for instance.

In the end, I just liked to have more depth in the play of protoss.

My english is not very good, so I am having a hard time to make my ideas clear. Please let me know what are you opinions on this.

EDIT :
To make it clear :
- I would still want to have warp gate as a research of the core
- I would only want to have access to the stargate or robo sooner, and it to be an alternative to warp early on. That should be a good news for all I think...
- Since changing the core now is too late. The auto extractor wouldn't need any worker to mine gas, but we could only have 1 or 2 at a time. It is just and additional income (that could have to be teched) to allow Protoss to develop all their tech a little bit faster.

You said, "mouz is a successful team with a lot of good players"--isn't that AT LEAST good enough to be......... . ... .. .. mentioned?

not really. winning, even a team league, is still largely individual. you practice with your team and receive some support from them, but honestly that comes into play more in individual leagues more than team leagues. team leagues are all online, you're not there together talking and giving each other advice (unless you're eg cuz we're the best) you're all sitting at home playing your own individual matches and winning or losing on your own. and even the practice, most people are more likely to practice with friends and regular practice partners, whether theyre on their team or not.

Monetizing the numerous big Western Tournaments would be a a mistake unless it is at a very reasonable cost. There are about 4-5 big tournaments such as the NASL, MLG, IPL, IEM already and if all of them were to charge $50 for every season, what is going to happen? Multiply that by 6 if we count the GSL and we don't even need to argue anymore.

I dont know what kind of rich family the target audience live in that would gladly pay more than $100 a year for watching SC2 and that's only assuming 1 season per year. We are talking about the budgets of normal fans of a niche industry aging from 14 to early 30s here. Finding more sponsors and buying more adverts while continuing the present model is the most reasonable way to maintain the popularity of this scene. Going PPV in the manner of other hardcore sports only makes sense when there is only one big tournament and league, and even then that would only work in NA, not in other countries that don't have that.

Are u kidding me? Did you listen his rant?
How often do you go to cinema, drinking senseless, eating at MC if u ahve a full fridge?
Dude those perspectices like yours are from guys who got illusioned by the "internet". The life is not for free. You normally CAN'T listen to music everywhere everyday everytime for free. You CAN'T watch movies and series for free everytime everywhere everyday.
Did you even know you pay for TV?

Well, ever heard about Hartz4? As a german, im sure you know that term. What do you think, its just a german problem? I have to work hard for my money, others just DONT HAVE IT. I dont know what you do for a living, but i have rent to pay, a car to insure, a family to feed. Maybe if you are some decadent child with absolutely no relationship to money, yeah, then its easy to take 25 bucks from somewhere and dump it into crap. I cant (and wont).

And yeah i have to pay GEZ from my own money, not the money from my parents (or pirated). Even more reason.

Actually, its really ridiculous how many people dont have any sense for money. Mindboggling.

Your frustrations would be better spent on practice instead of QQ on the forums. I'm not saying this to be mean, but there are plenty of ways to deal with that build, and there is no excuse to be losing that much to it. Get someone to help you out, there are plenty of protosses out there that would help you with that, maybe some on your own team.

You are one of the top players in the world and in my opnion, a top 3 zerg with a LOT of succes vs. protoss. It's okay to lose to players who are at the top of their game and their races, just hang in there and work it out.

The shock was massive. The funny thing is, the build order that horror use to beat me was the exact same build order NesTea used against me just now. Thanks to that, I was able to flawlessly block NesTea's aggression. I guess the WCS loss was beneficial in some way.

apparently mkp got one-base bane-busted by horror zzz

Not that shocking, seems the only Zergs that realise how easy lategame ZvT is are Symbol and Losira. Every other Zerg still seems to feel intimidated and cheese people better than them.

LOL

Maybe your sense of how "easy" lategame ZvT is is incorrect, or you're saying that you're much smarter than Top GSL Zergs when it comes to this MU?

EDIT: Also your sense of "better" is probably off too. No wonder you think ZvT is super imbalanced - you automatically assume MVP and MKP are better than all Zerg players (and that goes down the Terran and Zerg ranks too), so when they lose, it must be imbalance.

I don't think MKP and MVP are better than every Zerg player? I know MarineKing is a lot better than Horror though, lol

Do you also attribute MKP's 0-2 loss to ByuL as imbalance? ByuL 6pooled game 1 and 7pooled game 2 winning both.

Point is, MKP's losing to early all-ins isn't due to the fact that Terran is underpowered vs Zerg... (whether it is or not is a different story, although I believe it isn't), it's due to the fact that MKP uses almost the exact same build every single game, and doesn't scout, in order to gain an economic advantage. You can be 100% certain that you are not going to get proxy rax'd by MKP, nor will you be facing reactor hellion build, limiting the options. And because MKP often doesn't scout, you can take a risk and simply bane bust, because he hasn't prepared for such a build.

Same thing that was done to Flash yesterday in the WCS qualifiers, if you're not able to mix it up people will take advantage of it.

It's not like Horror beat MKP in a macro game (by the way, upsets do happen) - Horror used a build that was much more likely to succeed against MKP than against the average Terran player.

EDIT: Your logic would also suggest TvZ is imbalanced in T's favour since a guy who just started playing (Reality) beat Symbol. Not saying that's true (it isn't), but that's your "sound" logic.

In your quest to claim that ZvT early game isn't imbalanced, you forgot to ask yourself why MKP often goes for cc-first builds.

hes done stupid risky shit since the beta

I'm not saying you cannot win, but as it once was that it was a lot more effort to win against Terran, now it takes a lot more effort to beat Zerg than to actually win as Zerg. I hope Blizzard steps in before HOTS, but I fear they won't.

Nani shouldn't leave the way he did, as he is a professional yet I can fully understand him. Generally speaking even though we had a PvP final in GSL, you can see Zergs rising left and right... and thats just not about good play. Hopefully next series will be better.

he plays solely based on bad timings and then sits in the middle of the map for 2 minutes before actually attacking. when you play that bad you're supposed to lose.

Well the graphs just show that zerg is way easier to play if anything. That's why they are hiring low league players for game balance, so they can also work on balancing difficulty.

So it's ok for me to be twice as good as somebody and still lose cause the race at top foreign level is too easy, while I would have to move to korea and practice with the best players there just to be competitive and balance the win rates with my own race. Solid point bro, try again maybe.

terrans limped along on their bullshit and then when it got fixed korean terrans figured out new timings and learned how to macro. it took them 2 months to get back to >50% win while you and all the other foreigners sat and bitched. you never deserved to win. get used to it.

Someone sure is working hard to have the right to display their signature... Good job.

They are funny overall, but some are confusing if you don't know the context of the quote.

Well I tried to include the context when needed. Could you point out the confusing ones? I would like to fix them before I get too far into his quotes.

You did include context for most the quote that would probably be confusing, others might be funnier if you knew the context but context is not required

people should be grateful for annoying phrases, they distract you from their strategical analysis.

I have talked to 4 ther guys, tomorrow, 16 CAT, when the first match starts, we'll be there, on the last row, playing vuvuzelas...whos awesome? we're awesome

first off, no you're not
second, even if you did why would you be proud of being a faggot? some people have weird taste, that means you get to fuck with them to show how manly you are?
(I think this was for Twilight showing?)

well to be fair
fat guy picture
would certainly bring up the level of british soccer as well.

The only funny thing off the top of my head I remember Idra saying is when he got angry that people were calling Hiya ugly in an LR thread.

ty for the help...I can see those being confusing w/o context. I was in a hurry to try to pump out a lot of quotes for the original post and add later.

I didn't add context for "i dont care if orb cheats, he couldnt win anyway" because it is pretty self-explanatory...he is calling orb bad.
