If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Question: Do you watch Anime in Japanese or English?

Most people will say Japanese, but I think there are some "agreed" upon dubs that people think are superior to the original Japanese. This includes like Cowboy Bebop/FLCL.

Also the Ghost Story dub is alleged "must watch."

I mostly try both, sub and dub, and then I decide what to watch. Mostly it ends up being japanese dub with english subs. Some english dubs are pretty good and I like them better. For seasonal stuff I watch subs for obvious reasons.

You should ask yourself if the show is worth watching if you are so bored you have to tab away and do something else.

I guess it has been asked a lot but can you guys tell me?

The problem with watching it in Japanese is I get bored sometimes and want to browse the internet and can't do that when I have to read subtitles.

Thinking about watching Death Parade.

Japanese with english subtitles. IMO if I get bored enough during watching an anime that I want to browse the internet while an episode is on, then to me, its not worth watching in the first place.

Some dubs do better than the original Japanese audio (i.e. Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z) The last 5-10 yrs though have rarely produced outstanding dubs. Looking at it from a linguistics point of view, it's hard to translate perfectly as some of them require contextualization. 91 Days is one of the dubs I look forward to as it's set in the Prohibition Period of the US.

Around 75% of the anime I watched was subbed, that said I don't think english dubs are far behind japanese dubs for the kind of shows I usually watch. Picking subs by default is just the easier option since it's much harder to notice poor voiceacting if you have no clue what they're saying.

If I want to watch an english dubbed anime though it should atleast meet one of the following criteria:

- The show doesn't take place in Japan/Has a lot of foreign characters e.g. Baccano, Hellsing Ultimate.
- The show has a distinct western feel to it (aka it's a cop show) e.g. Darker than Black, Death Note.
- Crispin Freeman plays a major role in it e.g. Hellsing Ultimate, Haruhi.

Also the last two years i've frequently browsed other stuff while watching a show (even on anime I consider to be my favorites). If you're a veteran it could mean you're just burnt out on anime and need to take a break from it.

At one point, I might have agreed about FMA, since the dub for it was alright. But better? After watching FMA03 and Brotherhood in Japanese, there is no way I could go back. The dub might be passable, but its definitely not better, IMO.

I've never heard a dub that's better than the Japanese version. It's not that I'm a fan of Japanese over English, it's that no anime dub has Disney level actors dubbing for them. It almost always sounds forced and half-assed.

Your two points play a large role. Also personal preference in voices and if they seem to fit a character. I agree with the bolded part.

Do you count movies? Because Ghibli Movies often have Disney Level actors dub.

In Japanese. Like Sentenal said, if I watch an anime, it's because I'm interested in it; not because I want white noise. I can just watch some ASMR videos or listen to music if I want that.

I've heard that the Black Lagoon dub is actually really good. I should check that out sometime. I've had an itch to rewatch the series for a while.

This is the only video you need to watch for the BL dub.

Lmao. Sounds like me IRL.

I feel like the Japan arc would be improved quite a bit by the dub...

I've never seen a reason to bother with changing a movie to a dub anyway. If it has Hollywood A listers doing them, I'm sure the dubs are pretty great. There's some passable ones but I've still watched 100% subbed and 0% dubbed. Well, there was one exception.

I'll have to disagree. The majority of english dubs are absolutely awful.

that OreGairu OVA was pretty nice. Only bad part about it was that there was no best-imouto.
