Gurren Lagann - Haha, very unique ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWA
I'm not sure if 'unique' is a word I'd use for it, but its a good show. If you are looking for shows similar, they are out there. Gurren Lagann draws alot from Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster, and its sequel, Top wo Nerae! 2 Diebuster. Both are worth a watch (Gunbuster is one of my favorite animes of all time). Gunbuster itself is a classic from the 80s, and Diebuster is fairly recent. New Getter Robo would be the next closest thing to Gurren Lagann as far as I can think of, and I do highly recommend this show. GaoGaiGar: Final is also very similar in terms of style and awesomeness, except you would sort of have to watch through the 70 episode series itself (Final is a sequel OVA to the series), and it is kinda 'monster of the week' for the first 40ish episodes lol. Honestly, most "Super Robot" type mecha shows would be a good watch if you enjoyed Gurren Lagann.

Had a good cast of support characters though; Ami, Inko-chan, Yasuko and student prez.
Actually, i think the ending couldn't have been more appropriate. Toradora it's not just a story of love, it's mainly a story of growth (or life if you prefer). The ending was forced since the characters had too many things to fix before they could go on. I had found a couple of very well thought-out reviews of the story and character relations over the net, but they're in italian so there's little use for them here. I suppose Toradora isn't that loved by the anime community since it's not really an anime, it's more of a romance (in fact it was a light novel originally) with his pace and characters (seriously, a normal non-dummy male protagonist? a mature girl with no exxagerated personality trait? those are pretty rare if you ask me. Kare Kano has much more unrealistic main characters and still it's considered the best romantic comedy by many). The ending being spoiled the first 30 seconds of the first episode made immediately clear one point about Toradora: this is not about who's getting who, it's about how people growth and find their reasons to be (and still you'll be crying, at least i did, a LOT). The OST is also hot stuff.
If anyone ever asked me for a romantic anime, i wouldn't have doubt: Toradora for the modern era and MI for the classics. Imho Maison Ikkoku rest unsurpassed, but it's an anime for a more mature audience (the characters in that house are so fucking beautiful, romantic paintings of the decadency of the modern era) and has a pace that's way too slow for modern standards (90+ episode thx but no).

Just finished Disappearance, and it was pretty good. I liked it. IDK what the reason was though, but it was so quiet I had to crank my sound up really high for it to be normal volume.

I love it and despite it CLEARLY being aimed as an all-male audience that is just a bunch of drooling retards you come to care a lot for the characters and story (when they are actually doing shit with the story and not a billion boobs/panty episode, but who cn complain about that?).
Sora no Otoshimono Forte -Yeah they made a second season, and it's even more ridiculous than the first. Apparently they are making a movie now too! T.T If you're experimental check out these 2 seasons, otherwise see the others previous on the list. Cool, someone else who watches Sora no Otoshimono and appreciates it
I usually hate ecchi harem shit but this show puts a smile on my face.

I MEAN SERIOUSLY WTF you just made my day
btw to anyone who still hasn't watched School Days, this guy is joking. If you love good romantic comedies, watch it!

Can't say I thought about it that deeply. Yeah character growth is a part of it, that and the characters were the strong points, but the other parts were still mediocre to me, and it just doesn't make it "great" for me. I don't think the anime community dislikes it (at least /a/). The reaction is fairly opposing (not nearly if you discount the trolls), but I'd say more people like it than not.
I read maison ikkoku. Way easier to do that than watch it.
I'm not the biggest fan of pure romance/drama stuff so my opinion is probably a bit skewed.

Toradora was really popular in the year it was airing; IIRC, general consensus revealed it to be one of the most popular that season, if not that whole year, arguably being beaten only by CLANNAD/CLANNAD After Story.
Nowadays with a lot less exposure, the series has become more of a hidden gem than anything. Still feels a bit mainstream personally but if someone hasn't watched it yet (and doesn't really get turned off by Kugitsuns) then it should be amongst the first series I recommend.
I also think that a lot of people that watch Toradora tend to miss the general points that were pointed out by other uses previously; yes it involves romance but Toradora goes a lot more deeper than just establishing a "Good End" based on the protagonist(s) getting a boyfriend/girlfriend. Realistically speaking (and Toradora reflects this), people at that age are just not ready for such a huge responsibility, but in time they will be.
In other cases, does anyone know when the alternate ending episodes for OreImo is set to be aired? The TV ending was alright, the plane ticket reference was pretty funny (though I wouldn't expect it for a while), and the ending definitely did not feel conclusive at all, which it shouldn't. At least we got some development on Kirino and Kyousuke's end, even if it was rushed a bit.

Toradora is one of my favorite anime of all time. I remember watching it in kona's streams once, and I was like ooh that looks pretty good and started watching it.

I should have a computer in about two weeks, just in time for the winter season. I'm gonna watch the anime adaptation of the American TV show Supernatural. I'm interested to see how it's adapted.
And Spazer, I love you for those charts.
Final note: Can't we just PM a mod and ask him to edit the OP with the winter chart/general recommendation chart?

I just installed Ever17. Will play it through the holiday. Is it any good? And any suggestion as to which arc I should play first?

As for which arc to play first, I'd go for Sora, since iirc it relies the least on understanding other stuff going on. My recommended order (someone feel free to correct me if there is a better one) would be Sora, Sara, Tsugumi, You, Coco.
Edit - speaking of which, I should get around to Umineko ep 7 now that it's out...

IMO I'd do Tsugumi's route first, since that is the "canon" route for Takashi. Sora's route is pretty meh afterwards. Similarly, I'd do You's route first for the Kid, and then Sara. Coco obviously has to be done last. Coco's route is what makes the game, its so good. If you ever get bored or anything while playing through like, Sora's route or something, just keep at it. Getting to Coco's route is completely worth it.

The reason I put Sora's route before Tsugumi's is that Tsugumi's is so much better. Putting the weaker routes first makes the better ones shine more, wheras if the better ones are first the weaker ones seem a lot worse. When you play the first few routes the mystery is still interesting. Afterwards, exploring Lemu is less interesting, so the routes need to be better. Maybe.
I'd rank the routes: Sara < Sora < You < Coco < Tsugumi
|
Honestly with You/Sara either one can be done first, but with Tsugumi/Sora, I gotta disagree. In terms of similarities, those two are closer to each other than You/Sara. I feel that playing Sora's route first might lessen someone's enjoyment of Tsugumi's route. Which would be a shame, because Tsugumi is a much better character than Sora, and the things that make Tsugumi's route unique are alot better than what makes Sora's route unique.

a new Kurenai OVA is out too cant wait to see it

watching cowbow bebop right now and just bought a bunch of Hayao Miyazaki movies. this will be a good holiday

I just finished watching the Haruhi movie. I waited since it was first released and purposefully avoided any and all possible spoilers and plot descriptions until the day of its DVD release. I had to tell myself out loud numerous times to not DL the shitty camrip. I even actually had to cancel and delete the DL twice.
It finally fucking came out and wow, just wow, was it worth the nearly year-long wait.
I'm really happy they did the film so well.

New Angel Beats episode was pretty hilarious.
Though it definitely wasn't what I expected.

Good to hear the movie was awesome, I'll look forward to it.
