This should have been posted in anime thread. Well all I can say is it looks like Japan has taken one step closer to becoming like korea.

I'm not one to panic, but really, if your market consists of mainly minors, not being able to sell to them is a huge blow.
I'd imagine almost every category of manga/anime, the major audience is minors.

You would be wrong... obviously they are important, but they are not the market for this material. And if you walk into kinokuniya to look at the manga section, the type of manga this law is targeting makes up about 3% of the floorspace. The people that buy it are not normally minors.

Mani, but it isn't like Kinokuniya targets this niche, it is a general purpose bookstore still. The direct problem is more apparent in the specialty shops in Akiba. That said, there seem to be responses already from publishers starting to strike out contents. The major issue to me here lies in the extremely vague nature of the law applied to a wide scope in the most populous region of Japan.
Meh, its like a ratings system like we do here for games, except instead of an independent entity doin the reviews, we leave it up to the interpretations of people in general. On an issue that is arguable in its importance - you don't see them touching gravure models or the tons of videos that just skirt by the AV category, what's the point of this law?

I want to watch Captain Tsubasa but I can't find it

as far as I understood it, everything that has a hint of Loli will outright get banned and stuff that has a hint of a naked boob will get moved to 18+ so yeah I think it will affect the industry pretty hard.
well time wil ltell but really japan allready has ridiculous laws regarding prostitution, censorship etc so maybe this is just another stupid step and in the end there wont be much of a change. What I am really scared of is what will happen to the anime industry because I really dont want to watch some 6 or older rated battle animes.

WOW!!! since when TL has become like this... god, and i thought combat-ex was the worst...
anyway, in case that guy is reading this: do you even know why echii anime only air late at night? Do you understand that a culture where girls lost their virginity at age of 15 DONT GIVE A FUCK about you rating system?
The rating system (to me) is the language itself: "normal" -> "echii" -> "hentai" + porn.. WTF is so hard to understand? and now they are trying to merge "echii" into porn which is clearly FUCKING retarded... Noticed how they dont ban Child pornography but banning "drawing which look like child porn"... wow, i dont know how many time i tried to make people to understand that fact in that thread...
Question: I heard the ban wont affect VN and games? and even if it does, how the hell they gona block fan made VN that are distribute on the internet? LoL

Also pretty sure real CP is already banned in japan. NVM
Not sure if VN's are rated, but I'd guess you couldn't just buy them over the counter if it's eroge like you can the weekly mags if you're 13.

This makes me sad panda. I want at least in Japan Freedom of expression. Its not like it matters to me, im 21 but more restriction => less people watching/reading => lower budget for new anime/manga.
And i enjoyed how was Japan different in this... damn you westren habits, before they even had one bath for men and women and they didnt need towels .
"Child pornography is banned in Japan by the Act on Punishment of Activities Relating to Child Prostitution and Child Pornography.[4] It was passed in the Diet of Japan in 1998, and enforcement started in 1999. It was amended in 2003." Wiki

From what I've read and heard, the publishers are reacting rather intensely to this. They're cutting a lot of content and asking authors to avoid so much as a school uniform in their works. This law just seems weird.

There a lot of different reactions to this. Some publishers tell their authors not to use anything that can be seen as sexual (including school uniforms), other publishers even encourage their authors that they can continue to write whatever they want, and that they will publish it if it's good.
So it's not yet decided that the industry won't fight back. The prime minister is on their side, as can be seen on his blog and in his statements, but that alone is not enough. Especially against the governor of Tokyo, who is responsible for the bill in the first place.
Edit: To add something else to the thread, due to a recommendation from another site, I've started Eureka Seven. 12 episodes in currently, it's rather good. One of the last episodes (with the illusionary world or whatever was weird, but the rest is nice).
I had to breach my "no Coalgirls releases" policy, because there were no other releases available, so it better has to be awesome. My poor ratio. :|

Eureka has a good sountrack. And Anemone is a great character.

Good series. Gets some hate for trying to be "DEEP" but I enjoyed it immensely. Haven't watched the movie because of bad reviews though.

Sorry, I've made a decision to NEVER post in any TL discussion that could ever get political. I try to not even read the threads, since then I would feel the need to flame several people lol.
But people who are talking about age-rating stuff in Japan, without taking into account their culture, are just dumb... What they are doing, is taking foreign values, and imposing them on the Japanese. Most anime gets censored like crazy when brought out of Japan anyway, when going to foreign countries, so I don't see a problem.
As for Manga publishers telling their artist to not even draw school uniforms, I don't see how some Mangas could even exist without them, seeing as Schools are a common setting. Just imagine Bleach without school elements lol
