If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

I would also recommend Clannad. They were able to tie all the routes in the VN into one mostly coherent story, so that's plus.

I dunno, what type of anime do you like? Do you like drama/romance anime?

Also, even though my favorite part of Gurren Lagann is the first 6ish episodes, keep at it! The rest of the show is good as well.

I still don't know what to make of this. I see Anime Tenchou with awesome art reminiscent of The Legend of Koizumi and I see Flandre blowing shit up.

I just finished the sixth episode last night, don't kill my dreams like that.

And @Sentenal: Clannad is really well-made, the only reason you wouldn't like it is if you're not into the genre. (As Kakera stated, it's a drama/romance)

I have no idea why this is directed at me, because that is essentially what I said in my post.

WHAT THE FUCK. IS GOING ON.

I can't believe we're finally getting some plot here.

All the Index II fansubbing drama has resulted in the creation of another group. They're basically using other subs (mostly gg-UTW) and editing them to make them more accurate.

The catch is that none of them actually know Japanese, lol.

So Index vol 22 sucked QQ

I was wondering why when I saw that post on Sankaku about some otaku rage about it, now I guess I kind of feel his pain. Misaka totally starting to beat like Himegami for the getting screwed over for no reason character ><

EDIT - Meh, this vol really annoyed me. The character 'development' for Index up to this point is already pretty absurd, but this vol's absurdity just takes the crown. I tend to overlook that for Index, but the amount of Index-route esque events is pissing me off (let's not get into how Index isn't even a real character as much as she is a Peach that lives with Mario and eats him broke before getting abducted). As per usual with Index, I guess, the author is trying to introduce some new characters without introducing too many new characters by recycling in random ass folks from the SS. In a way though almost everything from vol 10 and on up to this point has just served to kind of highlight how scary the next obstacle that Touma will face will be. Or...plot wise they might as well as not exist. There is seriously way too much buildup if it is still all going to come down to the two primary manipulators in the end and Kamijyo-san and his merry band.

Seriously who'd think the whole thing about the Kamijyo-faction is going to work out like this, a bit of shounen hot-blood stuff is ok, this is just too much -.-

I do like the author's words at the end when he mentioned how Touma is highly consistent, but thematically he simply represents an ideal relative to something else. Consequently, he doesn't so much enjoy growth as scales with whatever opposition he is facing. When put that way, it actually makes him kind of a neat character to me.

So many groups do it that way these days. All get their subs from Crunchy, Funi or wherever. I'd assume they at least have a translation checker on their team to check if the editing holds truth to translation.

I sincerely doubt that because TLC need a better grasp of Japanese than your standard TL in order to, well, TLC.

(note: this applies to the group Spazer's talking about, assuming we're thinking of the same people)

With regards to Index II subbing drama... my only comment will be "cry more, UTW".

lolololol

So much drama over a little bit of localization... It'd be hilarious if this was all planned out.
1) Incite fan rage by teaming up with gg.
2) Disband the joint to the cheers of viewers everywhere.

Seriously, some people are treating it like the return of the prodigal son.

Edit: By the way, it's an awesome season to be a siscon.

Meh, I still really can't agree on using Sparky for Biribiri, though maybe being a native speaker of neither English nor Japanese is clouding my judgment. That said, not really something to rage over

I think it's a tough call. I had a similar tough call when I was translating Landreaall (although that project died because we couldn't get a scanner T_T), because Ion calls her big brother "onii" which... doesn't... work. The other issue compounding that was that English speakers don't actually call other people by their relationship, they call them by name. Or by some other name. Like "hey asshole." At what point do you draw the line between using a translator's note and trying to actually localize it?

The fact that English name-calling doesn't work on the same ground as Japanese is what makes me really uncomfortable about that particular piece of translation. That partially stems from a belief that localization blows and we should stick to the original as much as we could, but honestly, I don't think using Sparky as a name makes sense in English either. Like, we seem to be fine with characterizing people with animals, with curses, or some kind of a modification on names. However, we don't quite use inanimate things to represent people. We can call them monsters, but not quite a spark of electricity. Oh, and in general I hate the idea of translating these 'onomatopoeias' (for lack of a true English equivalent) in Japanese to English.

Meh, still, just a stylistic decision, nothing to really rage about imo. The outburst of the community is amusing as hell though.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree :p I stuck with "onii" and a translator's note because I hate losing significant chunks of meaning by bad attempts at localization, hahah.

Nah I know that you agree, simply elaborating my thoughts on the particular matter. Granted kind of contradictory thoughts in the sense that I don't like the localization but think it is nothing to rage about, but still~

I think localization is important; anyone can do a literal translation, it's making the text mean something to the reader that's important. I just draw a faint line at the names section, for instance, because I feel like there're nuances in naming that are often tough to drop (to an extent that's why you often saw re-naming in older translations but nowadays people just keep foreign names), especially when it comes to nicknames. I'm all for people coming up with equivalents but... yeah.

For example my problem with Biribiri -> Sparky is that not only is it really weird to call someone by a sound-effect in English, it's not an accurate translation... :/
