There's a obvious dissonance in cirumstancial meaning when people say design and point to older stuff. That picture may be an example of manliness, but it has nothing to do with old vs. new character design due to the "badass" factor coming from the art, pose and invoked emotion. Just comparing character design the new one is obviously more grown up, i.e. "manly". My theory is that Luffy had almost all of those badass moments before the 2 year skip that people just associate his old design with the "awesome and manly Luffy". | ||

But robin was changed completely from the original charracter she was. | ||

I agree. and One Piece has lots of characters that dont comform to any of the established manga stereotypes, both in appearance and personality. Its a completley unique piece of art. Ivankov is a great example. He is a super strong character and a king, who also happens to be an okama. Oda seems very pro HBT-rights, the okamas in one piece are always helpful to the strawhats and luffy has great respect for ivankov and bon kurei. The Fishmen are also a good portrayal of racism and discrimination in human society, and the celestial dragons is a hilarious caricature of the upper class. | ||

I actually think that he is a bit of a boring character. I'd much rather know more about the Admiral, and in general the highest tiers of World Government. EDIT: Sorry i didn't express myself properly - "the Admiral" is of course the new Admiral Fujitora | ||

Jimbei is top tier because he did many awesome things during impel down/marineford, he was prepared to die for luffy so that he could save Ace, and he managed to save luffy from his mental breakdown that almost drove him insane after aces death. I also respect him because he is fishman who has suffered greatly from the abuse of humans, yet he has gotten over his hatred of humans and tries bring the two races togheter. | ||

Because she was originally a ruthless back-stabbing and heartless woman who was mis-treated by the world, it's a good thing that she's become a good person. I really like each and every one of the straw hats just the way they are. Edit: don't you dare put arlong in the same tier as law, crocodile, etc. arlong was nothing more than a racist, hateful dip-shit who's also really fucking weak. | ||
