Nitpicking on two points: 1) Oberyn was clearly wearing light leather armor. Beats the hell out of me why, but he was wearing pleated leather. 2) Movies sometimes give a bad impression of sword fighting, suggesting that a parry always consists of straight-blocking a blow. This is false. A perpendicular block is a very inefficient move, is easily broken, and is really only done to avoid imminent death. The classic case is a swordsman in the ground defending against a killing chop. But in almost every case, the better move is to deflect the blade aside without properly blocking. Most of the longsword-style fights we've seen in GoT rely on this kind of deflection. Oberyn actually used is quite a few times in his fight, pushing against the flat of the Mountain's blade with the haft of his spear. Obviously there are diminishing returns when you get to someone like the Mountain's bulk, but the most agile, speedy fencers (my only point of reference) are all very strong - and that's a sport where you don't even need force on striking. | ||

(I like his armor too) . He can probably throw that dagger on the slow Mountain's head ezpz. and for Jamie..his duel with Ned Stark was rather sloppy imo. Sad that we won't see the real Jamie fight, unless some miracle will bring back his hand. | ||

Sort of a gentlemans agreement to keep nobility alive during battles (the people with heavy armor was nobility). Later on in when gunpowder was used in war, it is considered wrong to aim at officers xD Oh well just a sidenote. On with the GoT rambling ^^ | ||
