And not even fun ones, ones that were chosen to appeal to modern sensibilities. Alpha woman type. Non-standard family. Druggie guy who no one believes and will probably get someone killed over a drug fix. Teenage girl who is actually smart but is disenchanted with everyone around her. Rick has been fun because he started off without a defined cliche - he was just a dude trying to make sense of things. In fact, the S1 gang from TWD was full of pretty interesting characters. The ones that were cliches (like S1 Carol) were background enough that it didn't bother me. The main characters (Lori, Rick, Shane, probably Dale/Glen/Andrea) were all pretty interesting in their own ways. I really don't get that from what is supposed to be our main FTWD cast. Well there was cliché but you are right in the sense that it wasn't THAT obvious. Hope it's going to get good because the start of the apocalypse is indeed interesting. I just hope FTWD is not just a teenage version of TWD.

Since then a couple of days passed and alot of people die in LA every day so there should be alot of chaos already but instead everything is still in order... This is what was bothering me the whole episode as well. For sure if these zombies are no longer in the church they are outside. If zombies are outside they bite people. It get in the news. Not just one incident with the ambulance. It would already be everywhere in the news! Attacks everywhere and panic. It start out way too slowly.

It start out way too slowly. I can only imagine that the virus/infection hasn't spread to everyone yet, still early stages and could be that most of the people who die everyday haven't been exposed to it yet or the zombie strain isn't as widespread as the rest of the virus strain. That being said.... Man that zombie chick in the beginning and the people she killed/ate not even showing up or being mentioned again really, really annoyed me through out the episode and after. What happened to the paramedic the driver on the highway ate? I guess they can say it's being covered up by the authorities to not freak out the people... but they could have shown us...

If you wanted to find a family like this, it would be a needle in a haystack in L.A. Really if you wanted to be realistic, these folks would all be hispanic. personally did not enjoy the forced PC crap loaded into the show... blended family? check. alpha white wife? check. beta ethnic dad? check. genius chick who got a scholarship into Berklee and dating a black dude? check. her college flunkie junkie brother? check. In one scene with Madison and Travis (I think after Travis checks out the junkie commune where the attack happened and finds blood on the floor), it's weird how much the dialogue and body language between them was exactly reversed from, say, what happens in a 1950's movie where a woman loses her cool and the man has to calm her down and act like everything is under control. In the scene, Madison calms him down and plays the cool, logical head trying to explain it away as the commune just being a violent and drug-infested place (explaining the guy freaking out and the blood), while Travis plays the emotional head who is freaking out like a chick who just broke a nail. Her dominant body language, holding the back of his neck and holding his arm, pulling HIM in the for the kiss. just lol...feminist undertones anyone? but i guess that's what today's media is all about...coming up with fictional characters like this so it's perceived as the "norm" of American society...LOL. It's just annoying that these days, on TV shows especially, families like these have to be contrived and put on TV just in an effort to be "diverse." How is a situation like this relatable to the vast majority of people in America, or hell, people in L.A.? it's really not, other than the fact that there's a 4-person family involved. I personally enjoyed The Walking Dead much more because the characters were more relatable. Then again, maybe it's because I'm from The South. (i'm sure some people will probably say "surprise surprise!" ;p At least Rick and Carl had balls right? In fact, looking at even The Walking Dead, there is not a single "weak" female character other than Carol at the beginning of the show and her daughter. The way they are presenting the characters, they are leaning toward the wife being the alpha leader of the group...which...let's face it... if the shit hit the fan and a real zombie apocalypse happened? There would be virtually no female leaders in groups with men around. That's the way it worked back in the caveman days, and when society disintegrates, GUESS WHERE WE ARE? Men in general are more physically able and would take on the vast majority of leadership roles in this situation. When society disintegrates, survival is based on strength. Especially when the vast majority of groups are so dispersed and small in number. So I wonder...IF I'M RIGHT and Madison ends up being the leader (more or less) of their group, how are they going to pull it off in a believable way? Is she gonna be the one picking a fight with other chick leaders or getting in fist fights with dudes? LOL the show is alright, and i'll probably watch it just because season 6 of walking dead isn't until october. Thanks for saving me lots of facepalms. Reminds me of the first 5minutes of a show called Dark Matter, where the female and a man fights, and it all feels so fake in every single possible way, it's like they don't even want to make people relate to characters.

Also mother was saved hard by plot armor when said friend sorta choose to bite her but then decided to wait for the father to intervene. He didn't quietly walk away, he ran like crazy out of the shooting gallery he was in. He was in such a panic that he got hit by a car, which is why he ends up limping for the rest of the episode after he breaks out of the hospital (they mentioned a bunch of broken bones he had at some point). As far as how generic the characters are, I agree but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. FTWD is supposed to be the beginning of the apocalypse as viewed from the most basic level. Even if the characters and their story (Alpha female, beta male, divorced families attempting to meld, BS teenager drama) are cliche and somewhat generic, the idea in my opinion is that they're supposed be that way in the beginning, and they'll become more interesting and outstanding as the show progresses. If we look at TWD, most of the characters were exceptional from the beginning, because the apocalypse had already been going for three months. Rick was automatically exceptional because he was a sheriff, giving him a unique authority and training. Glenn was exceptional because of his adeptness with supply runs.Daryl was exceptional because he was a hunter. Shane was also exceptional due to his status as a sheriff. There were also generic characters who hadn't yet been tempered by the apocalypse quite yet, such as most of the female characters. Carol is good example because she starts out like this: And ended up like this: So hopefully we'll see a similar transformation for some of these characters. In response to the idea that the cast is ethnically diverse for political correctness, I disagree. The family is from inner-city LA, which is itself ethnically diverse. I think because of their location, the two main characters will be pretty well-equipped to survive in the apocalypse. Particularly the mother, who has already established herself (perhaps annoyingly so) as a stone-cold dominatrix. She and the father both work in an inner-city school for troubled kids, so they're probably used to facing adversity on some level - unlike your typical upper-middle class white family. They'll both have qualms about doing what needs to be done, but they'll get there faster than their kids, who are all either emo (daughter), weak (father's kid), or drug-addicted (mother's kid). The drug-addict son is probably dead. He's got a major addiction that's going to make him physically ill once his DTs really set in. He also got hit by a car and broke a bunch of bones, which haven't healed at all, so he's already physically weak. He also seems prone to running off by himself, which as we all know usually means death. Going forward, now that the characters are established, I'm hoping to see an incredibly in-depth look at how society broke down. How long did the virus take to spread? What attempts were made to contain it? When and how did the government shut down? What was the news coverage like? If we get to see that, I'll be happy.

You already knew yesterday that the black guy doesn't respond to your bullshit, and that running him over doesn't kill him. And that approaching him asking him if he's OK isn't going to do anything but have him try to attack you like a zombie. What the hell makes you think the black security guard is going to be any different? And that approaching him and asking him if he is OK is going to be any different? The level of retardation really is incredulous. If there's a riot, why the fuck would you run into a random shop and cage yourself up when there is likely a million different exits out of the area and probably not that many people in the first place? The hooligans are trying to loot stores, not randomly assault people, it's not like you're in a police uniform.

How about someone who knows what's happening fucking tells other people so they can prepare and act accordingly? Instead, Travis told his ~17 year old son not to worry and go read a book, and the daughter almost went out to be killed because noone explained to her that her bf is a zombie. Holy fuck, this exactly. Like jesus christ did you forget how to communicate.... your kids aren't 5 years old, just tell them already. So utterly annoying even at the end the mother blocks the door THEN SAYS NOTHING... ugh.

Also I feel like I'm in the deep minority here when I say that I understand the behavior of the characters. A lot of my argument stems from this one idea: human life has value. Considering that statement, every character is behaving as they should. Mother: She sees her boss (a dear friend) appear to be sick. But this isn't season 5 of The Walking Dead, this her staring at someone she cares about apparently only affected by a virus. Because she cares about him, because can't possibly know the futility of trying to reason with him, and because nobody in the Walking Dead universe is supposed to have a goddamn clue what a zombie is, killing him without pretense does not make sense. After verifying that the principal, in fact, is just an aggressive zombie that can't be reasoned with does she kill someone she truly cares about and respects. But she doesn't get to show her emotions. She doesn't get to panic and scream and freak the fuck out like she wants to. She knows that her children are relying on her to be strong in such a terrifying time. Her only choice is to hold it in for the sake of her children. Father: Also making a lot of sense. He has seen that shit is going downhill, but nobody else understands. The population is inadvertently using the zombie crisis to riot. Now, who does the father value? His son. I would argue that attempting to weave his son through violent rioters and riot-ready cops is far more dangerous than hiding in a secure location. Consider this relevant historical event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots 53 dead, 2,000 injured, 11,000 arrested. A caring parent DOES NOT risk their child in that type of environment if they can avoid it. Daughter: Teen angst. Son: Normally I'd say that after what he's gone through he should be kicking in a storm of drugs into his system to try and shut out the trauma. However they spent a lot (read: a shit ton) of time episode 1 going over how his drug related environment was filled with horror/zombies, so I can kinda get behind his reaction to the situation. Still, he is aware of the danger and he showed that when the sister attempted to leave home. We all live in a culture where we have zombies movies and a 5 season zombie tv show that's so popular AMC, the same fucking station, made a second zombie show. We all understand that the character with the best chance to survive in FTWD right now is that chubby high school kid that talks like an adult. But everyone acting like that isn't real. It isn't human. Human beings don't abandon each other at the first sign of trouble because they're afraid. When we think there's danger we band together and help with our loved ones, not immediately think of bashing their skulls in or abandoning them to save ourselves. TLDR: Two episodes in and FWTD is already getting to full scale rioting and regular zombie appearances, and I think the narrative is progressing properly.

I thought the first episode was a bit weird though, you'd have thought that after all this time with at least 3 walkers in the church place, there would've been some shit going on, especially since it's close to a big road so those walkers would definitely walk out and make a fuss. But it's progressing nicely. I wish they'd gone through with the whole thing where that weird fat kid was planning to stock up on supplies. I love that type of stuff. Looking forward to the rest, hopefully they make it intriguing rather than just action and bashing zombie skulls in.
