No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is.

I think outside of episodes like Lesson Zero, there's been a lot less "WTF" moments this season. Let me explain that further; I mean episodes that would make an outside (i.e. non-brony) observer say "wow, this show is pretty damn cool, instead of being the mindless drivel that I would normally associate with the My Little Pony franchise." While season 2 has plenty of continuity and the character development is still top-notch, it seems to lack the same epicness that some of season 1's episodes had. I mean, in season 1, Fluttershy learns to stick up for her friends by taking on a dragon the size of a parking garage; in season 2, she tells a minotaur that she's unsatisfied with his assertiveness seminar. In season 1, Rainbow Dash is forced to overcome her fear of failure by performing an aerial trick that literally no one else has ever been able to perform in order to save her friend and lifelong heroes from certain death. In season 2, her friends teach her to stop being a jerk by stealing her thunder, and she learns that books are cool. In season 1, Pinkie has unique knowledge of how to stop a swarm of ravenous insects from devouring Ponyville's food supply; in season 2 she learns to babysit.
Maybe I'm just tired and being hyper-critical, but other than Lesson Zero, there hasn't been a season 2 episode yet where my jaw actually dropped from the awesome.

Quite frankly, I couldn't care less if non-bronies enjoy it. Not to mention, why would you normally think to try to get someone interested by using an episode from Season 2 - I'm not saying you can't just asking why you expect to. And then there's the problem of me not really agreeing with you that Season 2 is not "as good as season 1" - I personally think it's only getting better. So all in all, I don't agree with anything you've posted - Rainbow Dash reading books and epic adorableness, Derpy talking (the first time), Twilight tackling time travel (bam alliteration), and that's just to name a few.

i actually really disliked lesson zero waaaaay to over the top for me. I personally think that season 2 has been just as good as season 1, has a chance at being better if the rest of the season is stellar.

I'm pretty sure that the mane 6 defeating the embodiment of Chaos and Disharmony would rank pretty high on the list of "Epic" things this series has to offer.
Lesson Zero - Even cartoons need their wacky, zany episodes. Too bad Twilight had to take it for the team on that one =D
Bio's Breakdown will come later tonight, after 1080p comes out. Who knew I would actually enjoy this?

This is my list of favorite episodes of S2 that are basically on-par with the awesomeness that was S1 as a whole.
~Return of Harmony, Pt 1&2 (no-brainers) ~Lesson Zero (even though I didn't like the end result of the episode because I preferred Twilight's cheesy letters at the end of every episode in S1, this one still stands out as one of the best of S2) ~Luna Eclipsed (come on, it's Luna - and she shares in nerdy historical knowledge with Twilight xD) ~Sisterhooves Social (same type of the cuteness/humor mix from select episodes in S1) ~May the Best Pet Win (same reasoning as above, not to mention one of the best songs of the entire show and an epic competition of pets) ~Hearth's Warming Eve (the baroque&renaissance atmosphere/ambiance created in this episode is just too cool, plus it's got the same good cuteness/humor mix) ~Sweet and Elite (another one of the best songs of the entire show + Rarity wearing a scarf + seeing Canterlot as you've never seen it before + hilarity of her friends crashing the party) ~Secret of my Excess (cute sheltered spike -> crafty hoarder spike -> king kong spike -> ending with one of the best scenes of the entire show. Spirity ftw.) ~Family Appreciation (took a character we knew nothing about and in the span of about three minutes, made it into one of the coolest characters just from listening to her tell a story. that and typical CMC shenanigans that everyone loves) ~The Last Roundup (epic western adventure with lots of humor, nothing else need be said, another no-brainer) ~The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 (great Mane-6 episode with another one of the best songs of the whole show) ~Hearts and Hooves Day (possibly the best CMC episode of the show excluding the talent competition episode from S1) ~Read It and Weep (epic adventure + rainbowdash turns into an egghead) ~It's about Time (huge no-brainer. the episode was pure epic)

For what its worth I like Season 2 just as much and perhaps more than Season 1 + Show Spoiler [quick comment on new episode] + Equestria sure is a pretty epic place, and way to go Spike you sure showed 'em
Don't wanna cross Rarity that is for sure

So the teaser for 2x22 is already out, and even by the standards set by Lesson Zero it looks weird as fuck.
+ Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/dO0G3.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/oiYmQ.png) Fluttershy doing push ups with her wing nipples is... new.

+ Show Spoiler + Hey guys, I have a direct line to what basically amounts to a godess of the realm, she also probably knows or can find out a hell of a lot about my origins. I could just send her a letter!
Or I could undertake an extremely dangerous trip with unknown results.

+ Show Spoiler +You don't know what was on that letter that got thrown into the lava, could have been some answers Anyway what would be the fun in that.

it's an interesting question to think about whether it's because of the similarities in how the source material appeals to similar audiences, or if it's due to how modern fan-communities operate in general
either way, it just kind of struck me as odd I don't know much about how other such shows' fanbases work but I would still guess that there is not any great similarity :<

today's episode: + Show Spoiler +I wish they would stop making Spike episodes - he is simply not an interesting character to focus on. It's possible to make good episodes where he's an important character (diamond dogs, secrets of my excess) but the episodes about him (this + owl's well that ends well) are my two least favorite episodes in the entire series. There were a few quality moments in today's episode, but those teenage dragons, ugh. Also now Spike has a pet phoenix that he is going to teach lessons, bleh.

Well.
+ Show Spoiler +B+, I missed the writer credit which was fortunate because it was funny, in character and the only issue was the teenage dragon part being boring and predictable. Don't really get why her 4th attempt suddenly worked. Rarity and Rainbow were awesome this episode.
I didn't realise Daylight Savings happened to the US and missed the stream.

It had some nice worldbuilding to it, brought up Spike's backstory, and it didn't destroy one of the stronger chapters of my fic. I was shocked to find out afterward that MW wrote it. I'm glad to see her growing as a writer; it makes season 3's future look even brighter.
Also, in before an MLP version of "Goodbye Butterfree" where Spike has to let his phoenix go back to its parents.

A + Show Spoiler +Loved it, loads of funny moments, good message. Spike is awesome as usual in any episode he's in. Dragon lore was cool as well.
My 3 favorite of the 6 being front and center this episode didn't hurt either.

I like season 2 better than season 1 so far. Just putting it out there.

The second season is still on the same level as the first. Closer to better than to worse.
LittleJoeRambler's post is completely worthless because he compares the best from season 1 to the worst from season 2. Isn't Cerberus, the 3-headed giant mutant gatekeeper of the underworld, at least dragon level? And how is a nuclear rainboom not epic enough? Anyway, even if it weren't for these, season 2 has a ton of awesome moments. Too many too count actually. At least 100 already, no meme intended. The Pinky Pie moments (Pinky Panic, Pinky cannon, Party cannon, Pinky Panic with me, hagging with the minotaur, chicken cherry - cherry chonga, ....,.........) alone would make the whole season enjoyable.

@bonifaceviii I'll admit, my jaw did drop when Rainbow said Derpy and she spoke, but that wasn't because of the elements in the show, it was because it was an almost unprecedented moment of fanservice.
Let me put this a different way: The hairs on the back of my neck stood up the first time I saw Dragonshy, and Fluttershy screamed "How dare you!" at the dragon; likewise, I literally cheered when Rainbow pulled off the Sonic Rainboom, and my heart went out to Rarity when she was getting more and more stressed during the Art of the Dress montage. Fluttershy winning a staring contest with a cockatrice was awesome too (cockatrice = badass, pony > cockatrice, pony = badassest). Applejack finally getting past her pride and asking her friends to help was something I've had to struggle with before, and I could relate. Those moments were extremely important for building the characters of the ponies, and it's likely one of the reasons that season 2 hasn't had as many of those moments: they've already been done.
And I'm not saying that season 2 is bad at all; it contains some of my favorite episodes overall. Sisterhooves Social is probably going to stay in my top 5 MLP:FiM episodes forever, and I found deeper-than-reasonable-for-a-children's-show meaning in Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000. The songs are awesome too; "Smile Smile Smile" and "Becoming Popular" are at or above the same level as "Winter Wrap-up" and "At the Gala" for me. This may be jumping the gun a fair bit, but I just feel that, as a whole, season 1 had more moving moments than season 2 has had so far. And for a show whose main draw (at least for me) is being able to make emotional connections with the characters, it's a little bit of a let-down.
But I have high hopes. The people working on this show have shown a brilliance that's rare in the entertainment industry these days, and I'm confident it'll shine through more and more as the show progresses.

@LJR
It's saturation. After that level of awesome in the show was achieved, that became your expectation and your standards are now much higher.

What I take from this is that those who prefer the "big moments" - the sonic rainbooms and dragon face-off - prefer season 1. (I realize it's not exactly a large sample size, oh well. ) I'm just the opposite. I really enjoy the "little things" like we've seen in abundance in season 2. You say that "Those moments were extremely important for building the characters of the ponies", which is true... but I think that the simple things can be just as important. Seeing those little golden moments - Rarity getting pissed at the dragons, Pinkie and Rarity trying to help Flutters in the market - are what define the characters in my mind.
I was going to say more, and say it better than I did... but I have to go right now. Cheers!

I think both seasons have fairly equal shares of both big and little things (as a whole).
