I agree with crunchum, Spike-centric episodes are inherently worse than other episodes. For me it comes down to the fact that Spike is a character with no real traits. I am actually having a lot of trouble to come up with adjectives to describe him that are not about his appearance. Everything I can come up with I can immediately refute with examples of the contrary. Sometimes he is bold, sometimes he is passive. Sometimes he is greedy, sometimes he is generous. Sometimes he is neat sometimes he is messy/gross. Sometimes he is immature, sometimes he is the most mature character in the episode. He's really just filler, so the episodes about him tend to be hollow for me.

I'm starting to feel bad for him though. This episode established that the only thing he has in this world is the mane 6, yet from their perspective, he is just an afterthought most of the time. He even had to tape himself into a picture implying that one that includes all of them doesn't exist. Not to mention that his main goal throughout the series (to get Rarity) is something that we all know will never happen, and that he is doomed to eternal failure. It's kind of sad to go back and look at how many episodes spike is the butt of the joke in. There have been way too many episodes where it fades to black while a group of characters laugh at spike.

As for the episode itself: below average for me. There were plenty of good bits (coincidentally or not, all of them not involving spike), but It was only the dressings of what makes an episode good, and not the real core of it.

I think the teenage dragon is the most evil character in the series yet. The was no reason at all to smash eggs other than to be a jerk. It rivals Gilda making Fluttershy cry as the meanest thing in the show.

Because obviously she would tell him. Like she told Twilight why she wanted her to find friends. Wouldn't be surprised if she did something similar.

If you think about it, Spike just repeated a growth akin to Twilight's from the two-part Season 1 introduction. He went off on a quest (like Twilight did), he started to learn more about himself along the way (like Twilight), he found a young companion that he relates to (this is a bit different, but akin to Twilight acquiring Spike after a great accomplishment), and understands himself and appreciates his life and friends a lot more as a result. In a sense she played the "Celestia" role, of course more by accident as she is has much less wisdom.

Still, I highly doubt Celestia would say anything concrete. She is a troll after all.

He is a child and still has to grow and develop. It wouldn't make sense for him to have many set-in-stone traits as you would think that part of his life hasn't come yet. I would also argue that his definitive trait is laziness, although when he wants something he will fight for it (Rarity). But he's a kid, a baby, and it makes sense that he is simple and a bit chaotic. The fact he has episodes I think is necessary because he is growing, and that needs to be reflected.

The family of phoenixes just lost their home and one of their children. Shouldn't they try to reunite the newborn phoenix with its family?

It is kind of weird. Why would Spike keep the egg, and why would Twilight let him? I can understand that they would lose the egg in the chaos, but the pheonixes don't seem stupid and would probably miss it and try to find it.

It makes Spike kind of look like a dick.

It was kind of a meh for me, it was a very competent episode that did something for spikes character, but I'm not interested in spike at all. Teenage dragons were boring to me. I loved the beginning and the baby phoenix, though.

I think yall are making a big deal out of a small thing regarding this. They were very far from Ponyville when this happened, and Spike literally saved the eggs life even though it put his own at risk.

What are they going to do, start putting up "lost egg" posters all over the continent or are the wild phoenixes supposed to call the police? It just seems like a futile effort, the best you can do at that point is raise the baby phoenix in a loving environment as a pony.

If you guys want to find something to complain about, you can definitely do better than this.

I actually quite liked Mare-Do-Well! In fact I like it more than this . But anyways was a pretty good episode. I don't like it that much but its still pretty decent. Iono maybe its cause I simply don't read too much into the episodes and really jsut watch them for the enjoyment / happy factor and all. Also cause ponies are awesome I wonder if the phoenix will show up in the future though.
