The episode would have been so cool if they didn't skip the whole "Arya makes Jaquen help her free Northern prisoners from the cells and take over Harrenhal". This season have gone completely off rails and it is crap. At this point they are spitting on the book material, not "adapting" it
That bothers me too. I felt that Harrenhal was the biggest period of growth in Arya's character in the books, and the TV show just completely gutted her. The scenes with Tywin were great, but they were great because of Tywin while Arya just stood there silent 90% of the time. She only recites her list of names once, and she walks out of the place without hurting or killing anyone. Very disappointing.

You guys really need to stop comparing the show to the books, as hard as it may be. It is simply not possible to reach the depth of the books in a television series, and more likely than not, the show will stray away further and further from the books. Constantly comparing things to the books will only ruin your experience, and you may as well stop watching the show now if you keep doing it.
Sure, some changes do make the plot worse, and some changes are not really necessary (Catelyn, wtf?), but most everything is a necessary evil that needs to be done, be it because of lack of money (missing large crowds, battles, dire wolves), lack of time (Reek. God that would've been awesome if they would've included this, though) or simply because some things work in a book, but not in a TV show (inner monologues, long descriptions of history or other cultures).
Also keep in mind that rabid book fans are not the only group the producers have to keep happy here. There's also the group of people who never even heard of the books before watching the show. Think about what they would think if Jeyne Westerling would appear next to Robb out of nowhere in the last episode. "Oh, yeah, I kinda married this girl you never saw before and subsequently don't care about. Surprise!" That. Just. Doesn't. Work. It just had to be changed so the audience will care, and won't assume it was just a cheap trick to get Robb killed.
Again, the show definitely isn't perfect, and at times I'd like the writing to be a little bit better. But, all in all, especially when ignoring the books, the show is still damn bloody awesome.

No doubt, you'll be here again next week to preach about how awful the show is.
Please change the record.
Yes, they are changing the character (shock, horror, who didn't expect that). Instead of complaining about what Arya was like in the books, how about appreciating what she's like in the TV show.

This is the one containing book spoilers, so yes people are going to continue comparing things to the books (both the good and the bad).

She's retarded. Is that what we're supposed to appreciate? She looks Tywin in the eyes, says 'all men can die', then goes to her personal assassin and says 'please kill that person who was on screen for less than 5 minutes and didn't actually do anything'.
The Arya in the show is a mentally incompetent 9 year old girl. The Arya in the books is a clever and insightful 9 year old girl.
The show is awful. It's getting more awful.
This thread is about documenting its demise. Not sucking HBO's cock and asking for more.

Well, it shouldn't purely be about bashing everything about the series either, based purely on your own subjective understanding of what the book is compared to the TV show. In any case, your stupidity is amusing, so thank you for reaffirming that angry nerds are still out there! Wait... are you the red shirt guy? Please be the red shirt guy.

I mean, it's not like in the books she told Jaqen to kill unimportant guys like Chiswyck or Weese before she realizes that she could've called for the heads of people like Tywin.
Oh, wait..

I believe the reason they took the chain out is because they don't have the budget to fully produce tons of large-scale ships assaulting the blackwater and eventually crashing and burning due to the wildfire.

After this episode, I've begun to like Stannis a lot more. When he was first introduced, he seemed like your typical stern looking leader, but now I have a much better understanding of why he is the way he is. He's the guy doing the good work and gets no recognition and love for it, expect by those who are closest to him.

Chapter was okish, specially liked the Bronn - Tyrion (awesome) and Stanis - Davos parts.
But wtf at the no chain -.-

so I watched this episode, was pretty standard from what we've seen in the series have a question though, when the Volantese girl talks about her brother, I know that scene didn't happen in the books, but the story about the brother and a slave sounds familiar, was that in the books?

If true, that would be sad. I remember the blackwater as being the epitome of terrible terrible damage. Hope the show gives tyrion his proper role in the battle though

Hope the show gives tyrion his proper role in the battle though well yeah, as it stands Tyrion's "smart" move is to order wildfire.... which has been ordered already... soo... he does nothing clever in the defense of the city actually

Quite a boring episode, let's hope the next one with the battle of Kings Landing will be better.
|
Any way I imagine the chain being put in, all I see is weak CGI. Even the wolf composite shots are nice but detract from the realism --- only the Gilly/Wolf & Bran/Summer scenes were captivating. I think resisting CGI boats is the way to go. LoTR had epic CGI battles but it felt ridiculous (LoTR was ridiculous by default) in most places. If they have a few barges and props to burn, great. Maybe some clever camera tricks to multiply the effect... one brief CGI of the explosion at a distance, then individual scenes of fire on the battlefield, in the sky, Davos underwater... the audience will get the picture.

Signed so much. And it gets worse if you read complaints about the show changes from people who obviously haven't read the books or forgotten about it. Facepalm much.
That said, I also don't like all of the changes, but if you read some comments from non-book-readers you understand some changes better (and some still not). So the decision from Catelyn feels bad in the series? Apparently I read no complaints from non-book-readers that it had no reason (because it had). And for me it felt bad in the books aswell, the main reason I hated Cat and was actually glad Martin killed her off. Jon's changes are believable if you want to get to the same ending like in the books. But it could have been made better, without Qhorin just wandering away from Jon. Dany's chapters in the books were boring from book 2, show Dany is so much more awesome. In my opinion. But enough of this.
What can you say of this episode? It was a pretty good build-up episode (i hope they don't disappoint next 2 episodes), there did not happen much and if you have a problem with this you should not watch series but a movie. Or you can complain about the show having too much of these kinds of episodes. Not that all complaints are invalid. But many of the book readers you can read here are.
There is actually a poll about a battle between Robb and Tywin's army at the other thread. I hope the show did not give too much of a wrong impression about a battle with Robb.

Anyone else disappointed with the Wildling's "uniforms"? They look like they raided Empire Strikes Back's wardrobe from the Hoth Scenes. I always pictured them to be wearing like all kinds of random animal skins and such, kinda like what Tyrion's hill tribes looked like. Instead they all have this same L.L. Bean fuzzy white parka.
