I'm assuming you're not too familiar with these players. Idra? The person who for a while would essentially use faggot every time he lost a game? LastShadow, who verbally taunted Desrow with homophobic slurs and about his weight so much, that Desrow physically attacked him? IdrA has specifically cleaned up his act. He doesn't get to be lumped in with the hateful players anymore. I was not aware of the LastShadow incident. Yeah, because merely expressing how terrible everyone who beats him is in a considerate way is leagues above calling someone a 'nigger.' Makes all kinds of sense. One isn't insulting to an entire group of people who have suffered unthinkable hardship over the course of history, you fucking idiot. Actually, neither are. I'm not even going to entertain the idea that using the word 'nigger' in casual speech is somehow a blanket attack on all black people everywhere. It's just nonsense.

Should contact quantic's sponsors though. No. Read the fucking thread instead of hoping in and posting shit. ? Many of us have read it, I know what InControl is saying but he's saying that as a beneficiary of the pro scene. I still choose to contact Razer. Good for you, destroy the scene you invested so much time in so 'the man' doesn't get his paycheck What? You expect companies like CBS to actually broadcast games if the competitors use derogatory, inflammatory and racist language? As I said earlier, if people want SC2 to grow bigger (eg. being on television), they have to accept that some acts (eg. racist remarks) are simply unacceptable. People are watching him play starcraft 2 from his HOUSE. Even if CBS aired Starcraft 2 games on tv, they sure as hell wouldn't be showing players' streaming from their home. In tournaments, we all know that players are strictly moderated and will never use words like Destiny and other players do while on the spot. He's inviting you into his personal life of starcraft, dont fucking tell him how he should act within his own fucking house. Besides, Destiny is a streamer, not a competitor, he has even fucking said it in interviews. Saying he shouldnt use WORDS that people find offensive is ridiculous and contacting sponsors and his team would be like contacting a movie production agency to sue a writer for using such WORDS. I absolutely love the Starcraft 2 community, but i must regrettably say that some people truly overestimate the gravity of the scene to think that one popular figure saying "nigger" or "gook" would make the scene collapse. Who the fuck wants a scene that only boasts skilled computer players and a lack of personality? Shit like this is necessary in every community (e-sports, sports) to encourage people to be themselves, and not change their image just so a few "progressives" wont get offended. Note to the guy i quoted, this isnt a personal rebuttal or disagreement, i just felt my post was relevant with yours. no hard feelings dood! thanks! Ragados

People get too easily offended these days. Yeah he really shouldn't be saying stuff like this but people need to get over the whole racial slur thing. There are far worse things going on around the world than someone calling you a name and hurting your feelings on a video game.

No I don't think it's necessary language but Christ we're going a little overboard with this shit. And frankly, doing that makes us a much larger liability to the scene.
I made a joke about my mum being in the kitchen earlier this morning, I hope I'm not on the naughty list for SC

What's nonsense is that you think you can rewrite history and that you can define what is and isn't offensive for everyone else.

Yeah, because merely expressing how terrible everyone who beats him is in a considerate way is leagues above calling someone a 'nigger.' Makes all kinds of sense. Umm...yes it is. Are the lines between a "slur" and "not a slur" really so blurry for so many people? It's rather childish the way he lashes out at a loss and it would probably be an improvement for him to handle them better, but it's not even comparable to calling someone a faggot and a gook. No, it really isn't. Slurs are bad because you read more into them than what they actually are. Bottom line: Idra wants to make his opponent feel like shit. Just because some thin-skinned person gets hurt because he uses a particular word has nothing to do with the fact that Idra's intent has nothing to do with them, and that if they were a rational human being, they wouldn't waste their time getting upset.

I think we should take the whole "do what the community wants" thing off the table, because quite honestly that viewpoint of whatever streamer becomes 'famous' becoming the community's domestic lapdog is an obnoxious as hell thought that requires arbitrary brightlines for permissible actions. Not to say that Destiny should run a shock-based stream (which would also be obnoxious) but if the community is supposed to be affected and hanging onto every little thing that Destiny says, the community itself is obviously going off into the deep end. (a herp derp abusing the word community)
But regardless of whether that's public or private, racial slurs shouldn't be used offensively...offensive slurs have a way of strengthening the impact of both the hate and the word, and we wouldn't want to negatively strengthen bad words, would we?

Hell, we even have Asians and other minorities coming out and saying they don't give a fuck.
You might want to reevaluate your black-and-white stance.
And yeah, if someone just happens to be offended by the word chair, and I know they're offended by it, I'm not going to feel terrible if they overhear me saying it. Why? Because there's no damn reason for them to be offended if it's not actually directed at them. Ditto for 'nigger,' 'faggot,' and everything else. If I call you a faggot, and you're gay, then sure, be offended. But if I just say it out of context somewhere else, pretending they're the same thing is just ridiculous.

I dont see the big deal, its the internet get over it. Everybody needs to grow up and learn words dont hurt you, unless you let them.
|
It's not even about being offended...I'm not offended by it but in all honestly I've avoided his stream because his pointless BM that often crosses the line. Personally, the words don't bother me but it's definitely not something anyone should be saying even if they are pissed off about something. The word community gets thrown around a lot when it comes to StarCraft but BM'ing the shit out of someone because they all-inned you is more than ridiculous...on top of that, using prejudice language is even worse.
It doesn't matter if he wanted to be a community figure or not...his example speaks poorly of everyone as a whole to anyone who is exposed to the scene through him. I'm not saying anything should be done about it because he can say what he wants...it's just not a good image to have and unfortunately that image can instantly be generalized to the SC2 community as a whole pretty easily.

I have a black friend, and he laughs his ass off when destiny starts calling people nigger.
As a great man and actor who goes by the name of Morgan Freeman said when asked what he thinks people should do to fight racism: "Don't talk about it"

You guys realize the more you talk about this shit the more viewers he gets right?

This is exactly right. If you want REAL sponsors (and not just those pandering to gamers like Razer or Steelseries), people need to start acting like professionals. Whether or not you support Destiny, try to see this from the perspective of an exec. You might not be offended, but he makes the whole scene look pretty bad.

And yet he's right. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Words are a tool to express yourself. The problem with them is that they don't mean the same thing to everybody. The words Destiny uses sometimes don't annoy me much because he's explained himself more than enough. From his explanations and things he's actually done in the past, I can conclude that he's not a racist. So you're basically fighting words.

The people suggesting emailing of sponsors have the right idea. I just sent one in. The more you read threads like this, the more you realize how few people's minds will change. If this was an isolated incident, I wouldn't care enough to go the extra step (a whole 5 minutes to draft a letter). But as somebody pointed out, Destiny has been doing this for over a year now (as I noted in my letter) and his team doesn't seem to care enough about his behavior. People are free to vote with their dollars and I'm glad I saw all the contact info being passed out as a concrete portion of this discussion.
Oh, and us keyboard warriors don't need to save Riwanda to not be hypocrits. I'm fine with doing my small part. Doing nothing vs saving the world is a false dichotomy. I stood up for my friend when he got accosted by some drunk racist jerk in Baltimore when we were hailing a cab. I don't need to join Amnesty International and I doubt they'd bother to clean up pro gaming anyways. I'm fine with picking up trash in my own neighborhood and feeling good about it.

You've obviously never even paid ANY attention to Destiny's position on swearing on his stream. Swearing on the ladder, on his stream when only his viewers are watching, is WAY different from a professional game. Destiny has said that there's a time and place for everything - he most DEFINITELY would not play a broadcasted game (esp. if it WERE to be casted on CBS) and swear the way he does. So if LeBron James used derogatory and racist language when not playing NBA games or not making NBA promotional appearances that would be acceptable? Something tells me that Nike wouldn't be too happy.
And yet professional athletes in the NBA and NFL commit criminal acts at a rate far exceeding the general population. Its pretty obvious that this is much worse than using any racial slurs in casual ladder games. They often even remain as professional athletes and its forgotten after a few years.

The team probably doesn't care because Destiny still maintains a huge following and thus promotes their team despite the use of racial slurs. Dollars speak more than letter writers.
