I know there is a pretty strong anti-Obama sentiment on this site but I have to say that I find this kind of thing to be a VERY good sign. There are always extremists, but they usually don't get enough momentum to pass a law like in Arizona or put forth a reasonably popular presidential candidate like Trump (i literally laughed out loud as I typed that). What this indicates is that more moderate conservatives who usually are able to find more legitimate criticisms are desperate.
A very good sign indeed (for Obama and those who support his policies at least).

People are acting surprised that this is still an issue. Let me blow your mind: the majority of Republicans and their frontrunner nominee at the time (Trump) currently believe Obama is not an American-born citizen.

Of course this shouldn't matter in the first place, but the the fact that the majority of one of our leading two parties is so stupid should worry everyone.

Go USA!

Doesn't USA have any other problems at the moment..?!
They first ignore you. After they laugh at you. Next they will fight you. In the end you will win.

He did it because a lot of the doubters are independents who probably will change their mind on him now that he has released it. I think he waited until now to use it as a tool for his next campaign.

This. I can't believe how much attention this is getting. I hope people (especially politicians) can now focus on stuff to actually improve the life of their supporters.

edit:

Donald Trump says

"I'd like to know how does he get into Harvard, how does he get into Colombia if he isn't a very good student," Trump said, asking why the president doesn't release his college records from Occidental College.

"If he wants to release it that's fine, if he doesn't want to release it that's fine too. But the word is he wasn't a very good student," Trump added.

Just curious, but how is this legitimate proof? I do believe he was born an American citizen, but couldn't someone just make this certificate?

You can test the quality of the paper and ink for its age and source of origin though.

I also feel compelled to clear up some misconceptions about the Arizona law. First of all, any such law is unconstitutional because it must be passed at a federal level, not a state level. Individual states have no say in who runs for president. Basically, no candidate would have to pay attention to it at all and the law would simply be symbolic. Secondly, it's doubtful Obama released his certificate because of the "useless" Arizona law; he probably did it because Trump was running on what was basically a single-issue platform to get to the top of GOP polling.

They will probably think he forged it, easy thing to do for a president anyways.

As someone watching american politics from the side line I am just confused with this whole thing.

How could this even get this far?

Why is it a big deal that the president have to be born in the USA in the first place?

Don't the politics got other things to worry about?

It's a Constitutional requirement for the President of the United States to be a born citizen.

It's not a constitutional requirement to release it and still have to release it because people are idiotic and fall victim to crazy conspiracy theories.

Never said it was. I was explaining to a Swede, who said why the fuss over Obama being a born citizen, that the Constitution requires the President to be a born citizen.

Oh Jesus Christ. It's a copy of the original vital records. It says facsimile right on it. Hawaii digitized their birth records years ago. When he handed out copies to the press, did you expect them to be spit out of a replicator from Star Trek?

Nothing will satisfy a conspiracy theorist. They're like apocalypse cults whose faith just gets stronger with every failed prophecy.

Exactly, since when did our country go from being a melting pot of immigrants and cultures to a place where "you have to be born here" to aspire to the highest position in America... this "birther" thing should really be raising a debate on whether we should keep this requirement of birth in the country in order to run for president. (Yes I understand someone should atleast have citizenship and a reasonable amount of residency time in the country)

This is a website, which is on the internet, and the internet seems to be largely liberal, so I would be surprised to find a lot of anti-obama sentiment on here. Especially since I think a lot of people are at least decently intelligent on this site, and thus would hold more liberal viewpoints.
Can you ever argue in favor of something without first proving it?

Trump is such a tool.

Cue 6 months from now: "I heard he had 3 cavities when he was in his teens... if he wants to release his dental records that's fine, if he doesn't that's fine too. But the word is he didn't floss properly."
I'm going to sleep, let me get some of that carpet.
