Today we announce that we will be leaving the SC2 scene.
It's been two incredible years in the game, and we want to thank Maru, @SC2Zoun , @VIT_Ryung and @VIT_Crank for always representing Vitality in the best way possible, for all of the trophy lifts and incredible moments you brought with you 💛🐝
We wish you all the best in the future.
Going forward, we will be resuming operations under the ONYSDE banner with our existing members Maru, Ryung, and Zoun. We will also be bringing up our players from OFFSYDE to join the main squad on ONSYDE, so give a warm welcome to Rex and Krystianer as well!
Would assume a few more will follow since we wont have any EWC. Hopefully the players can find new teams.

That is so lame. Is it really true it's because of no ewc? What about blizzcon?

Its only my guess regarding EWC, it seems most likley but could be other things ofcourse that led to this deciscion.

Blizzcon is yet to be unconfirmed what exactly it will be, but from what we've heard it sounds more like the Blizzard Classic Cup will be more of a show-tournament instead of a World Cup-esque event.
I would also assume that Vitality isn't "disbanding" their SC2 division, it's just that all contracts have run out. If I recall, the deadline for the next EWC when players need to be hired is soon, so it makes sense that Vitality made their contracts last until this time. If there was an EWC, now they could decide who to keep.
Edit: Contract running out =/= kicking out. Less drastic or sudden. That was my point, spelled out for the guy in the last row <3

Blizzards fault for preventing SC2 being at EWC

SC2 would be the biggest esports if it weren't for evil blizzard to prevent viewers from watching sc2. Fortunately, the good saudis came to the rescue in the past.
Also, not renewing any contract is totally not disbanding the entire team for some reason.

What in the unsubstantiated claim? Where did this theory come from?
On-topic, yeah more teams will let their contracts end without renewal. It's a bummer but the only reason bigger teams were even looking at SC2 in the first place was due to EWC and the club championship.

EWC has bank behind it, it doesn’t have to insist publishers pay to be there

Not really anyone's fault but the tournament license is still a thing afaik. Since blizzard won't make any money from it they have no incentive making it fruitless for both parties

Yeah this is 100% EWC. There is no real business case in having an SC2 team around, but it did make sense if it could make the difference between second or third place at EWC.

There are still some tournaments, and I imagine BlizzCon finally coming back SC2 will still get decent viewership for their starcraft tournament. At least 30,000 viewers concurrent if I had to guess? Especially if they announce a new starcraft game. That is a lot of eyes to get on your brand. Also, simply signing a top player (if its like you say no reason to sponsor SC2 players) their asking price goes down for signing and it becomes more reasonable.

Licensing fees aren't fixed and can be negotiated. For example, trading ad space in exchange for the fee.

With how Vitality just acquired a new AoE2 team, I am not surprised they drop the SC2 team.

And I was told here that SC2 is by far the biggest RTS out there. Was I lied to?

The troll aside who should know that the biggest RTS around is BW, where every SOOP-streamer with 5 viewers is a millionaire (Flash is so rich he just bought Mars, true story bro!):
There are some rumours in AoE 2 that there will be some kind of bigger "Team Competition" in the near future, probably funded by Microsoft. It is yet unclear if this is about actual teamplay (2v2, 3v3 and even 4v4 are much bigger in AoE 2 than in any other RTS) or if it is a clanwar-based competition. As I said, mostly just rumours, but the one who started them is Hera, the currently by far best AoE 2 player who then proceeded to join Vitality. Hera is also a bigger personality in the space, for example he recently hostet a "1v7"-Match between him and 7 RTS-pros from other games. I guess someone like that is just more interesting for an EU-based organisation like Vitality than for example Maru.
Also, it is fair to say that AoE 2 will have much more offline-present than SC2 in the next few years. No wonder, it is after all an "active" game, as in it gets a new DLC atleast every year. And RedBull is still investing in it with in my opinion the best produced RTS-competition of all time in RedBull Wololo

Especially now Microsoft is the big boss for both.
Even so, the offerings of the last year or so by themselves were pretty cool, good tournaments online, a few offline. Plenty of content creators doing fun content for the hardcore or casual alike.
It suffers in comparison to the big mega-games in other genres, or indeed StarCraft 2’s own past, but it’s still chugging along alright, and better than most in the RTS sphere
