To quote Day9 (albeit somewhat out of context), lose your whole fuckin base.
but seriously.
try to plan ahead for how much larvae you're gonna need. as well as consider how big your economy is. If you have 2 hatch 2 queen and you just injected, try to have 20+ supply saved up for each inject cycle (unless you are constantly fighting/losing units or only making zerglings/drones) Remember to think if you are making 1 food units, your larvae = supply needed to not get blocked. if you are making 2 food units, your larvae x 2 = supply needed not to get blocked.
IMO if it is a huge issue just start making more overlords than you think you need and experiment with making less as time goes on. remember, it's way better to be 40/74 than to be 40/39. extra ovies also means you can afford to lose some without getting severely severely punished.

Look at the top right of the screen all the time, you will be a better gamer because of it. Also I like to stay one overlord ahead that way I won't get capped if I forget one or lose one.

early on, make them on set supply count until 30ish after that, my stupid way of doing this: look at how many rows of larvae do you have after you press your hotkey for all hatches, then S if you are making 1 supply units, and you have 1 row, go VZZZZZZZ 2 rows, go VVZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. if you are making 2 supply units, and you have 8 larvae, go VVRRRRRR 2 rows, go VVVVRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...
etc..

use more overlords. And I mean using them, not just making them.
Use your overlords to get vision, spread creep, or even scout.
Since these overlords can be killed anytime, you need to have some margin. And this margin will help you when you forget.
If you do nothing with your overlords, this margin is a waste of minerals and it would put you behind, but if you actually use your overlords it's not that bad.
But yes, ultimately the best way is to get better at watching at your supply count.

@_@" was wondering btw, as a protoss player trying out zerg just because it's such an awesomesauce fun race, I was thinking what kind of supply buffer should you have with overlords on 2 bases, obviously ideally spawn larva timings are asap. Like 16?? Because as terran or protoss, you only ever really need like 8 supply, because you can usually build supply depots and pylons faster than you can produce 2x units off a single building (unless you spammed barracks and reactors ofc), but with the spawn larva cycles, it's a bit harder, and can't work always if ur doing OL production like terran/protoss (Like building an overlord when you see 52/60 won't always work, just because things like roaches and etc take up so much supply, and are massed in "waves", not one at a time4 ---- So ultimately, what's the margin of supply buffer off of 2 bases usually? 3? 4? Would help a lot in seeing those warning signs, because I don't really get supply blocked as protoss....

This really is the essence of it... It's a relatively simple issue, just focus on checkling the top right until its a habit. It's as straightforward as that.

There's no secret to it. Pay attention to your supply limit and make overlords accordingly. It's the same for every other race.

Roaches will inflate your supply (they're very cheap for their supply). Mutalisks and Banelings will deflate your supply (they're very expensive for their supply). If you're very concerned about supply capping, you could always just avoid roach heavy builds and try something else.

you gotta time it with your spawn larva timings. shortly before halfway of spawn larva's duration is when you should make overlords, the number of which depending on how many units * supply cost of units you plan to make after it finishes
|
If you're building most units which take 2 supply you can make a mental note to make an OV per hatch every time you inject. It's not perfect, but it should keep you from having to spam them more often.

Terrible strategy question. Seriously terrible. We have a requirement as moderators to post why we are closing threads, but I can't explain it beyond repeating how terrible it is.
