Hi guys,

Please tell me if you find any way ( mechanical or event based) to minimize getting supply cap as zerg.
I discovered is very important and I always get supply cap in key moments( lost me a lot of games too).

Thanks

the real simple answer is to spawn more overlords. kinda lame but very true.

i always like to build xx units from my spawned larva and let my last larva be an OL or later on 2. that works pretty good for me

I just look at the supply count whenever I make a unit. Is it enough for the next round? If not, make more supply. If so, then keep going. I made it into a habit by practice, and now getting supply blocked as any race is a fairly rare occurrence for me.

The only thing is that as zerg you can get Larva capped, and so you have to be more careful making units than with terran or protoss.

check the top right corner. ALL THE TIME.

its the only way mate.

You need to develop cycles/triggers to help you. so whenever you build units, you look at supply.

The overlord production pretty much follows the spawn larva cycels, if you go ling one overlord for every seccond larva cycel if you go any thing w 2 supply one overlord for every spawn larva, if ultra or broodlords you should have enugh minerals to just make a shit load of overloards, but the spawn overlords should be glued to your spawn larva in the start. when your units start dieing you make a little les

I tend to go SVVVVVVVVVVVV once and be ok for the rest of the game.
But then again i am pretty bad with zerg

After 44 supply, Ive gotten into the habit of getting an Ovie with an 8 supply buffer. After 68 S, 16 supply buffer. After, 100 S, a 24 supply buffer, etc. Dont be afraid to jump the gun with producing.

Wtf kind of topic is this. What do you expect? Build overlords when you need to. Focus on not getting supply capped more than other areas? Seriously...

Learn to make overlord at 9, 15, 21 mechanically, then it's harder.

You need to be constant aware of how much overlords you'll need to build army from set of larvas. Nothing else, then pur epractice, sorry.

Great thing about zerg is that if you ever do slip up and get supply capped, you can at least make some buildings so it's not as bad. Throw down your 2nd, 3rd, and/or 4th extractors early to clear up some supply. Evo chambers are good choices too. You don't have to use the buildings right away if your income doesn't support them; you can just save them for later. It's not as optimal as building them when you're supposed to, but then again, neither is getting supply capped in the first place.

And of course with any race, you can always get upgrades while supply capped.

I usually do it in the mechanical way up to a certain point, like the 9 15 and so forth mark, but then it depends on the game. If I know I am going to be building a lot of roaches, I build them with a large supply buffer. If I am droning, its a little more of a "Of these 8 larvae I will build 7 drones and 1 overlord"

Things like this are what make sc2 a hard game, having good mechanics (low money/constant overlord porudction, constant injects/creep spread/multi tasking, are what make a good player. theres no cheat way of doing it, there are tricks you can do for say injecting and creep spreading, but in reality the only way to do it is to constantly be thinking about what you have to do.

So as has been stated already, keep flicking your eyes to that top right corner. build the overlords as you near being capped. bear in mind that although you dont want to be capped, its more efficient to be almost capped the whole game, if youre at 30/100, thats a complete waste, you want to be 30/35 then 50/55 etc etc.

EDIT: in terms of a method, a good one might be to make 2/3 overlords every macro round.

Its a good idea to have your injects lined up. firstly as it makes injecting easy as you do all hactches every 25 seconds, rather than a hatch every 10 seconds. also, it means you can make units once every 25 seconds, rather than having to do that all the time. as this is when you go up in supply, have enough supply for that round, (say if you have 3 hatch all popping larva, thats gonna be around 15 larva, so youre gonnna need around 30 supply assuming you are going either roach hydra or muta or some combination) so if you have 30 free supply for that round, build 3 or 4 overlords in that round and the rest units or drones, then when the next macro round comes you will have the supply free for the next lot of units, and you just need to add overlords into that round.

alternativly you could have a method of using larva that spawn while an inject is waiting to pop out ot build overlords, and then use the larva from the inject to spawn units, i think the first method is better though

lol when I saw the title I thought you meant avoiding getting 200/200 cuz u said supply capped not "supply stuck" ... I was like um.... fight more? lol

But ya just be constantly glancing top right, bottom left, top right, bottom left, the whole time you play. Seeing what's happening on the mini-map and seeing how fast your resources are changing and how much you have are 2 vital things while playing.

Actually, you should only be "focused" on the main gaming area during heavy micro. Otherwise you just be mainly looking at the mini-map and just looking at the main area to build / produce etc. So ya, stare at the mini-map and constantly glance at top right (like every 3-5 seconds)

Thanks guys...really interesting and new for me ideas.
From all the suggestion I think the one with popping overlord depending on the number of larvae is the most close to reality and somehow easier to remember.
It's one thing to tell people to look in the corner all the time, and another thing to do it in real game cause are so many things to pay attention to.
So as a rule from all the answers:
Keep constant check on your larvae capacity and have overlords ready.

Thanks guys.

i totally get your problem
my approach atm is to make overlords early on 9, 17 etc but later i go to check suplly whenever i larva inject.
when i inject 2 or more hatcheries at once i will have a ton of larva in 40 seconds so its agood time to think ahead in supply.

Build overlords 6-10 supply ahead of time.. and this doesn't warrant a thread btw.

im guessing the hardest part of preventing this, other than looking at the top right, is realizing that cheap units like roaches are 2 supply. if you're 35/44, that only leaves room for 4 roaches and when you have 8+ from 2 hatcheries from larva injects, you'll end up blocked very easily with lots of larva left over while other races don't really have this massive production spike (i guess you could argue warpgates but larva spikes more and roaches are cheaper than stalkers)

edit: zapdos says to build overlords 6-10 supply ahead of time but i just showed you that you probably should do it even more earlier than that.

To quote Day9 (albeit somewhat out of context), lose your whole fuckin base.

but seriously.

try to plan ahead for how much larvae you're gonna need. as well as consider how big your economy is. If you have 2 hatch 2 queen and you just injected, try to have 20+ supply saved up for each inject cycle (unless you are constantly fighting/losing units or only making zerglings/drones) Remember to think if you are making 1 food units, your larvae = supply needed to not get blocked. if you are making 2 food units, your larvae x 2 = supply needed not to get blocked.

IMO if it is a huge issue just start making more overlords than you think you need and experiment with making less as time goes on. remember, it's way better to be 40/74 than to be 40/39. extra ovies also means you can afford to lose some without getting severely severely punished.
If you're mad that someone else is brazenly trumpeting their beliefs with ignorance, perhaps you should be mad that you are doing it too.

Look at the top right of the screen all the time, you will be a better gamer because of it. Also I like to stay one overlord ahead that way I won't get capped if I forget one or lose one.

early on, make them on set supply count until 30ish
after that, my stupid way of doing this:
look at how many rows of larvae do you have
after you press your hotkey for all hatches, then S
if you are making 1 supply units, and you have 1 row, go VZZZZZZZ
2 rows, go VVZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ..
if you are making 2 supply units, and you have 8 larvae, go VVRRRRRR
2 rows, go VVVVRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

etc..

use more overlords.
And I mean using them, not just making them.

Use your overlords to get vision, spread creep, or even scout.

Since these overlords can be killed anytime, you need to have some margin. And this margin will help you when you forget.

If you do nothing with your overlords, this margin is a waste of minerals and it would put you behind, but if you actually use your overlords it's not that bad.

But yes, ultimately the best way is to get better at watching at your supply count.

@_@" was wondering btw, as a protoss player trying out zerg just because it's such an awesomesauce fun race, I was thinking what kind of supply buffer should you have with overlords on 2 bases, obviously ideally spawn larva timings are asap. Like 16?? Because as terran or protoss, you only ever really need like 8 supply, because you can usually build supply depots and pylons faster than you can produce 2x units off a single building (unless you spammed barracks and reactors ofc), but with the spawn larva cycles, it's a bit harder, and can't work always if ur doing OL production like terran/protoss (Like building an overlord when you see 52/60 won't always work, just because things like roaches and etc take up so much supply, and are massed in "waves", not one at a time4
----
So ultimately, what's the margin of supply buffer off of 2 bases usually?
3?
4?
Would help a lot in seeing those warning signs, because I don't really get supply blocked as protoss....

This really is the essence of it... It's a relatively simple issue, just focus on checkling the top right until its a habit. It's as straightforward as that.

There's no secret to it. Pay attention to your supply limit and make overlords accordingly. It's the same for every other race.

Roaches will inflate your supply (they're very cheap for their supply). Mutalisks and Banelings will deflate your supply (they're very expensive for their supply). If you're very concerned about supply capping, you could always just avoid roach heavy builds and try something else.

you gotta time it with your spawn larva timings. shortly before halfway of spawn larva's duration is when you should make overlords, the number of which depending on how many units * supply cost of units you plan to make after it finishes

If you're building most units which take 2 supply you can make a mental note to make an OV per hatch every time you inject. It's not perfect, but it should keep you from having to spam them more often.
