'천재의 귀환'엔 1년 8개월이라는 긴 시간이 필요했다. 그러나 이윤열의 손놀림은 더 빨라졌고, 그의 기계같은 생산력은 한층 강화됐다. 골드 마우스에 도전하는 유일한 승부사, 이윤열의 4강 진출 소감을 들어봤다.
The 'Return of the Prodigy' demanded extensive period of time. Lee Yoonyeol's dextrous hands have become even more swift, and his mechanical productivity(*1), empowered. From the only fighter thirsting victory to challenge the Golden Mouse, we listen to Lee Yoonyeol's words, after having made it to the semifinals.
-2연승으로 4강에 올랐다.
▶기분이 너무 좋다. 내 컨디션이 최고였다. 보여줄 수 있는 것을 모두 보여줘 더욱 기쁘다.
-You advanced to the semifinals with two consecutive wins.
▶I am overwhelmingly happy. I was at my very best. I am even more happy I was able to perform everything that I was able to do.
-테크트리가 늦은 감이 있다.
-Your tech tree seemed delayed somewhat.
▶연습을 통해 준비한 테크트리다. 예전에 벌처를 자주 사용했는데 그 다음 병력이 ‘SK테란’이었다. 그러나 이번에는 탱크와 배슬을 준비한 정석 플레이였다. 상대가 당황했을 것이다.
▶The tech tree was prepared through practice. Whenever I had used vultures in the past, my following strategical move were often SKTerran(*2). But, in this match, the follow up was amassment of tanks and vessels, by the book. The opponent must have been bewildered.
-드롭십 활용이 돋보였다.
-Your dropship placement was astonishing.
▶최근 저그전에서 드롭십을 활용한 연습을 많이 했다. 드롭십을 홀로 사용하면 큰 효과를 보지 못하지만 상대를 흔든 뒤 드롭십으로 뒤를 노리면 효과가 두 배, 세 배 된다.
▶I recently did much practice on placement of dropship against zerg. Dropship alone is merely effective, but when dropship penetrates deep inside after having agitated the opponent its effectiveness doubles, triples.
-저그전 11연승을 알고 있었나.
-Are you aware of your recent 11 consecutive victories against zerg?
▶경기 직전에야 알았다. 최근에 저그에 많이 진 기억뿐이었는데 스타리그에서는 지지 않았다니 놀랐다. 그리 크게 신경 쓰지는 않았다. 반드시 4강에 진출해야 한다는 생각뿐이었다. 앞으로 저그를 만난다면 지지 않을 만큼 자신감을 찾았다.
▶I realized that only before this match began. With my recent memory only recalling many losses I accumulated against zerg, it is shocking I was not defeated in Starleague. I did not dwell on it for too long. My concentration rested only on the thought that I must advance to semifinals. I have regained the confidence that I will not be defeated in future match ups with zerg.
-다음 상대는 한솥밥을 먹거나 한솥밥을 먹었던 선수다.
-Your next opponent is either the one who once broke bread with you, or the one who do break bread with you.
▶누구와 맞붙어도 상관 없다. (안)기효가 올라 오면 연습을 어떻게 해야 할지 생각해봐야 할 것 같다. 숙소에서 신경전을 벌일 것 같다. (이)병민이가 올라온다면 더 많은 준비가 필요하다. 최근에 테란전을 한 지 오래 됐기 때문이다.
▶Whoever I will be up against, it will not matter. I will have to think about structuring my practice if Kihyo advances. The dorm will be a psychological battlefield. If Byungmin makes it, I will need even more practice. My vs terran match has been a while.
-슈퍼파이트 준비는 어떻게 되는가.
-How is your Superfight preparation coming along.
▶슈퍼파이트 맵이 엊그제 왔다. 슈퍼파이트를 위한 연습은 단 한 번도 하지 않았다. 4강전에 안기효가 올라온다면 스타리그와 슈퍼파이트가 겹치는 맵이 있어 겸사겸사 준비할 수 있어 좋을 것 같다.
▶I received maps for Superfight day before yesterday. I did not spare a single practice game in Superfight. If Kihyo climbs up to semifinals, it will be more convenient for me in practicing for both Superfight and Starleague, since some maps overlap in both league.
-골드 마우스에 한 발 더 가까워졌다.
-You are one step closer to the Golden Mouse.
▶한 시도 긴장을 늦출 수 없다. 결승도 아니고 우승을 한 것도 아니기 때문이다. 그러나 우승까지 잘 풀려가고 있는 것 같다. ‘이윤열이 연습을 안 한다’라는 말을 듣지 않도록 열심히 연습해 준비하겠다.
▶I can not let myself out of leash even for a single hour. I am yet a winner of this league, or one of the two finalists. Nevertheless it all seems to bode well for me, winning the league. I will not let myself be faced with criticisms like 'Lee Yoonyeol does not practice.', and prepare with all the diligence there is.
mechanical productivity(*1) - It refers to Nada's macro-management skill, but more specifically his ability to produce and produce and produce...... units. One of his several nicknames (besides 'The Prodigy(Terran)', 'Yoonyeol fed with frontyard expo', 'Beaver', and 'One man team') is 'the Machine' dedicated to his mechanically exact and immaculately dextrous coordination of pumping out units.
SKTerran(*2) - This word refers to one of Terran's strategical mass of units often against zerg(and almost never against Protoss); Bionic with S. Vessels. It is particularly impressive and eye pleasing strategy among Terran fans(because it frequently gathers s. vessels in dozens if possible), originally devised by a pioneer progamer, Kim Seulki, aka SKTerran; thus the name of the strategy.
Edit: Break bread(*) - In this Koeran interview, if literally translated, the 'break bread' part is 'having to eat rice(meal) out of the same pot'; it simply means having been in the same team, as most of you probably guessed it out of the context, hence again... the unneccessary edit.

박성훈, 김택용, 안기효 등 가을의 프로토스들이 추풍낙엽처럼 모두 떨어졌다. 그것도 이병민이라는 한 명에게 말이다. ‘관심’이라는 단어를 좋아하는 백작님은 결승전에 오르기 위해 한 발 더 나아갔다.
Park Sunghoon, Kim Taekyong, An Kihyo - all Protoss fell like the autumn leaves. More specifically, they fell before one person, Lee Byungmin. The lord(*4) who finds the word 'appreciation' pleasing, has made yet another step forward towards the finals.
-1패 뒤 2승을 거두고 4강에 진출했다.
-You advanced to the finals with two consecutive wins, after a loss of first match.
▶ 역전승을 해서 너무 기쁘고, 전 경기에 비중을 많이 뒀는데 져 자신감이 떨어졌다. 두 번째 세트를 이기며 세 번째 세트에서 도박 전략이 통하리라 생각했다. 이전의 승리보다 훨씬 더 기쁘다.
▶I am glad that I have overcome the disadvantage and won. Having focused very much on the first match, I lost confidence after the defeat. Having won the second match, I knew that my gambit strategy will do its work. I am much more happy for this, than any other victories in the past.
-프로토스와 연속 상대했는데.
-You consistently fought with several Protoss.
▶제일 자신 없는 종족이 프로토스전이다. 네 명 중 세 명과 맞붙어 대진운이 좋지 않다고 생각했다. 그러나 이제 어려운 프로토스전을 모두 끝낸 뒤 테란전이 남았다. 이제 내가 더 좋아진 것 같다.
▶I lack confidence the most in vs Protoss. I thought my match up luck had been ill-fated having to meet three of the four Protoss who made it. However, the strenuous Protoss are done with, and I have only to face Terran. I think I have bettered myself.
-3세트는 어떻게 준비한 전략인지.
-How have you prepared the third match's strategy.
▶세 곳 중 스캔을 한 번 뿌린 뒤 나머지 한 자리를 찍는 도박 전략이었다. 2세트를 많이 준비해 3세트는 도박 전략을 짤 수밖에 없었다. 연습 시 내가 7시 위치에서 시작하면 상대가 다섯 시에 많이 나왔다. 이번에도 첫 스캔이 맞아떨어져 이기리라 생각했다.
▶Pure gamble - Scan one, and choosing one out of the remaining two. I have practiced excessively for the second match, thus being only able to devise up a gambling strategy for the third. During the practice, whenever I was 7, the other was at 5. After my first scan bull's-eyed, I knew I would win.
-관심이 자신에게 오는 것을 느끼는지.
-Do you feel the appreciation heading in your very direction.
▶몸으로 느끼는 것 보다 게시판이나 커뮤니티에 들어가면 팬들이 말하는 말이 ‘관심’이 많았다. 그 말을 자주 보게 돼 기쁘다.
▶Rather than being able to grasp that idea physically, whenever I check the boards, and communities I witness the word 'appreciation' more and more. I am glad having witnessed that word more often.
-KTF에서 유일한 스타리그다.
-You are the only Starleaguer in KTF.
▶팀에 속해 있어 분위기가 별로 좋지 않아 분위기에 맞춰가고 있다. 4강에 올랐지만 프로리그 성적 때문에 크게 기뻐할 수만은 없다. 내가 개인리그에서 성적을 내 팀 분위기까지 좋아지길 바란다.
▶Belonging in a team, I try to adapt to the team's somewhat gloomy atmosphere. With the poor proleague scoreboard, I can not fully delight in the excitement I have made it to the semifinals. I hope my performance in Starleague will serve as a boost in team spirit.
-다음 상대가 이윤열이다.
-Your next opponent is Lee Yoonyeol.
▶지금까지 게이머 하면서 아직까지 제일 자신 있는 것이 테란전이다. 예전에 한솥밥을 먹었던 이윤열이기 때문에 잘 알고 있다. 충분히 자신 있고 이길 것 같다. 생각한 전략대로라면 이길 수 있다.
▶During all these years spent as a progamer, I confide myself most in vs Terran. I know him well since we broke bread in past. I am sufficiently confident, and think will win. If the game unfolds as my thought-out strategy, I can win.
appreciation(*3) - Korean word 관심(meaning interest, appreciation, and fondness in other person or thing) have a very intricate history when it comes to Lee Byungmin. As all avid SC progaming fans know, Goodfriend is one of the good Terran player at the least, if not one of top 5, or even 3 in record. However, contrary to his sometimes monstrously overwhelming gameplays, he was the victim of several impressive 'of the year' matches; (on top of my head) by Kang Min(Nal_ra) with Hallucination Arbiters raping mass goliath in one swift move; by Choi Yunsung(oov) with full count wraith again raping goliath turret line in Nostalgia. Being victims of these several decisive matches, playing the race "Terran"(where there are just too many, and with the commonly accepted idea that Terran is the most stable race among three), and being a macro manager who gets stronger as the match elongates, he was categorized as one of the under appreciated progamers. However, all the fans in Korea knew that goodfriend is a very skilled Terran albeit regarded as an under appreciated progamer with series of happenings and consequential events. With this idea engraved in Korean fans, they started to search various articles, photo shoots, interviews, and broadcasting blunders which unintentionally degraded goodfriend's image; such as photo shoots with only half of his face showing, articles spelling his name wrong, broadcasted shows crediting other progamer's name in place of goodfriend's - and the examples were endless when all the Korean sc population diligently sought for them. Goodfriend soon became the icon of the 'under appreciated' progamers, and thus the fad to intentionally question and joke about his existence as a progamer - with comments like, Who is goodfriend? // He is the new Kard Rider progamer, ty. - spread like bonfire on a winter bush.
The Lord(*4) - Now, goodfriend at the center of all the attention with the notion that nobody recognizes him, acquires a new name during that period of time. dlqudals emfznekrtm. Yes, that's his new nickname. The first word derives from spelling out his korean name 이병민(Lee Byungmin) in English keybord, 이병민dllqudals. Then the fans took another step further in this wordplay and read dllqudals out lout in Korean and made it a word 들쿠달스(dlquals). Then they went through the same process, and finally came up with the word emfznekftm, and read it aloud to create 앰프즈낵틈(emfznekftm). Combining it, 들쿠달스 앰프즈낵틈(dlqudals emfznekftm), later evolved to dlqudals von emfznekftm, and finally to "the lord, dlqudals von emfznekftm" aka 들크달스 앰프즈낵틈 백작. And soon enough the fad caught on, and suddenly everyone was calling(or jeeringly mocking) him 'the lord'. By then the search engines in Korea were bombarded with questions requesting definitions to the word dlqudals von emfznekftm, since the fad was readily caught on with the maniac sc fans but not with the general public. Also the word dlqudals von emfznekftm ranked on the top 10 several times for a considerable amount of time, actually proving how goodfriend's 'lack of recognition' devised up by the fans, made him one of the most famous current progamers. Although I have retraced the goodfriend's ascension of 'the lord' in a somewhat verbose fashion, I have to assure you all the readers that this is mere tiny tiny tip of the iceberg. Goodfriend may not be the favorite progamer among the fans, but everybody knows him and everybody likes him, and of course, bows before the great one.
In conclusion, the interviewer's question about 관심(appreciation) can be regarded as a light funny sarcastic comment, since he already is very, very appreciated among the fans, albeit in a odd and strange fashion. =)
Oh, and do I need to mention that his fingers in the photo represents semifinals? Redundancy. Yup; it will be my dying habit.

홈코트가 좋긴 좋은가 보다. 경기 직후 대다수의 관중이 자리에서 일어나 환호성을 높였고, 오영종이 이동하는 길에 수많은 관중들이 몰려 플래시를 터뜨렸다. “짜릿하다”라고 말문을 연 오영종은 종족의 마지막 자존심을 지켰다.
Home court certainly has its advantage. Right after the match, almost all the fans payed a standing ovation and screamed. Wherever Anytime went, countless fans crowded him and took pictures. Anytime, opening his interview with "exquisitely poignant" honored the Protoss' mortal dignity.
-4강에 진출한 소감은 어떤가
-Your comment on advancing to semifinals.
▶연습 때 7드론에 당한 적이 있었다. 3세트에서 7드론을 또 쓰리라 예상했다. 초조하고 불안했는데 상대가 본진 투 해처리를 선택해 이기리라 생각했다. 캐논과 질럿이 모여야만 이기는데 캐논을 많이 소환한 덕이 이길 수 있었다. 김준영과 박태민을 이긴 후 테란을 만났으니 테란을 잡고 제주도로 갈 것이다.
▶I experienced 7 drone pool during practice. I predicted he'd use it again in the third match. I was agitated, and nervous. After finding out he went in-base twin hatchery, I thought I'd win. I was only able to win with many zealots amassed and enough cannons warped. The numerous warped cannons were the key to this victory. Since I am against a Terran, after having defeated Park Taemin, and Kim Junyoung, I will go to Jaeju island after defeating Terran.
-병력 대치가 꽤나 길었다.
-The units held their position for quite some time.
▶막을 수 있으리라 생각했다. 질럿 만으로도 막을 수 있다. 공1업을 하면 한 대를 덜 때려도 히드라리스크를 잡을 수 있기 때문이다. 질럿 컨트롤이 미숙했지만 하이템플러가 모인 후 이길 것으로 생각했다.
▶I knew I could withstand it. Zealots alone are capable. First level attack upgrade decreases the number of hits zealots need to kill hydralisks by one. I did poorly on zealot control but with high templars amassed, I knew I would win.
-커세어 운용이 돋보였다.
-Your Corsair placement was eye catching.
▶박태민은 달랐다. 히드라리스크를 쓰다 보면 오버로드를 놓치기 쉬운데 오버로드를 대동한 것이 다른 저그들과 다르다는 것을 느꼈다. 그러나 커세어로 오버로드를 다수 잡을 수 있어서 이겼다고 생각했다.
Park Taemin was different. When zerg use hydralisks, forgetting to bring along overlord is commonplace. I felt he was of different caliber compared to other zergs, seeing that he prepared for that early on. Still, I knew I would win when I was able to kill several overlords.
-16강 이후 저그만 상대했다.
▶시즌 시작 전 저그전에서 슬럼프를 보였다. 신한은행 스타리그 시즌2 시작하며 빌드를 많이 만들었다. 저그전을 했던 것이 행운이었다. 팬들이 저그전을 우려한 사람들이 많았다. 이제는 테란전만 남았으니 최선을 다해 ‘가을의 전설’을 이루고 싶다.
-Your matches were zergs all along after the round of 16.
▶Before starting this season, I was in a slump vs Zerg. After the season started, I devised up many new builds. I was fortunate to have met zergs. Many fans worried that I had to fight zergs. Now only Terran remain, and I will do my best to achieve the autumn legend.
-홈 그라운드였다.
-The home court advantage.
▶가족, 선생님, 친구, 르까프 지점장 등 모두 와줬다. 많은 분들이 응원와 줘 이길 수 있었다. 다음에 광주에 또 오면 이기리라 생각한다. 제 기량을 모두 펼친 것 같다.
▶Including Families, teachers, friends, Lecaf branch chief executive, and etc so many came for me. For all their cheers, I was able to win. The next time when I am in Gwangjoo, I think I will win. I have done my very best today.
-프로토스 홀로 남았다.
-You are the only remaining Protoss.
▶일부 팬들은 저그가 좋다고 하지만 테란이 상당히 좋은 맵인 것 같다. 그래서 16강과 8강에서 저그를 만난 것이 좋다고 생각했다. 지난해 가을 ‘테란전 스페셜리스트’였으니 올해도 그 이름에 걸맞게 테란을 꺾고 우승하겠다.
▶Some fans say the maps favor zerg, but I think terran has the advantage. That is why I thought that I felt fortunate to have met zerg in the round of 16 and quarterfinals. I was vs terran specialist last fall, and I will live up to that name and defeat terran for the trophy.
-고향에 왔다가 바로 서울로 올라가 아쉽지 않은가.
-Will you not miss your hometown, having to go back to Seoul so soon.
▶오히려 바쁜 것이 좋다. 프로리그에서도 기회만 주어진다면 반드시 승리하겠다. 또 그 동안 많은 관심과 애정을 보여주신 나은택 게임단주 대표님을 제주도로 모셔서 제주도에서 우승하는 모습을 보여드리고 싶다.
▶Being occupied is rather good. In every chances I get in Proleague, I will win it.
And, I want to invite Na Euntaek, the team's head manager, to Jaeju to repay all the passion and interest he took in us, and show him the very sight of myself winning the league.

가슴을 움켜 쥐었다. SK텔레콤 전상욱은 마지막 GG를 받아낸 후 자신의 가슴을 움켜 쥔 후 승리를 만끽했다. 최초 4강에 진출한 전상욱, 그의 말을 들어 봤다.
He grabbed his chest. After earning the final GG from the opponent, Jun Sangwook grabbed his chest and delighted in his victory. His very first advance to the semifinals, we listened to what he had to say.
-4강 진출 처음이다.
-It is your very first advance to the semifinals.
▶굉장히 기분이 좋다. 역전승이었다. 무난한 승리를 거둔 것보다 훨씬 더 좋다. 1패 뒤 경기는 훨씬 더 간절해진다. 이틀 전 너무 바보같이 졌다. 걱정이 많았는데 다행gl 이길 수 있었다.
I am extremely happy. I was down to 1:0, and won. It pleases me even more than a typical victory. The match after a loss becomes more yearning. I lost two days ago like a stupid person. I worried very much, but to compensate that all, I was able to win.
-WCG 이후 연패를 당했다.
-You were in a losing streak after the WCG
▶WCG를 하면서도 국내 리그에 대한 걱정이 많았다. 머리 속으로 빌드를 그려봤는데 몸이 피곤해 손이 따라져 주지 않았다. 서바이버 리그에서 김세현에게 진 후 PC방으로 떨어졌다. 변형태와의 첫 경기 후 알카노이드만 40~50경기를 한 것 같다. 다행이다.
▶Even during WCG I worried much about the Korean leagues. I drew up build orders in my mind, but already burnt out, the hand did not move as quickly as I wanted. I had to go to preliminaries after having lost to Kim Saehyun, in Survivor league. After the first match with Byun Hyungtae, I did 40~50 or so games on Alkanoid. I am relieved.
-1세트에서 진 후 웃음을 지었다.
-You grinned sorrowfully after your loss in the first match.
▶웃으려 했는데 쓴 웃음만 났다. 내 스스로 바보 같이 생각했다. 프로게이머들의 경기라고 생각할 수 없었다. 준비한 빌드가 모두 무너졌다. ‘웃으면 상황이 다 나아진다’라는 글을 책에서 봤다. 웃으려고 노력한 것인데 ‘썩은 미소’가 된 것 같다.
▶I was trying to smile, but only sorrowful grin leaked out. I thought to myself I was stupid. The match can not be regarded as a progamer match. All my prepared build orders collapsed. I once read a quote in a book saying that 'Smile makes all situations better.'. I was trying to smile, but it only came out to be a 'rotten grin'.
-눈물을 글썽였다.
-You had teardrops tingling on your eyes.
▶마냥 좋았기 때문에 눈물을 흘리는 것이 아니었다. 스타리그에서 우승을 차지한다면 눈물을 흘리겠지만 아직은 아니다. 너무 벅찬 기쁨 때문에 목소리가 달라졌던 것이다. 그래서 오해를 사지 않았나 한다.
▶It was not tears of pure happiness. I may cry if I win this league, but now is not the time. I was overwhelmed with joy, making my voice crack a bit. I think that drew some misunderstanding(about the tears).
-다음 상대는 오영종이다.
-Your next match is with Oh Youngjong.
▶오영종은 정말 잘한다. 계절이 계절인 만큼 분위기를 타고 있는데 컨디션만 회복한다면 프로토스전을 ‘그럭 저럭’ 하는 선수이기 때문에 ‘열심히’만 한다면 이길 것 같다. 이미 24강전에서 한 번 이기지 않았나.
▶He is exceptionally good. The seasons are what they are and he rides along the flow. Since I am 'so so' vs Protoss, I think I can win if I 'try' hard.(*6) I already had defeated him once in the round of 24.
-So1 스타리그에서 최연성이 오영종을 상대했다.
-Choi Yunsung fought with Oh Youngjong in So1 Starleague.
▶(최)연성이형에게 상대 특성에 대해 조언을 구하겠다. 먼저 상대했기 때문에 많은 것을 가르쳐주지 않을까 한다. 먼저 물어봐야 하지 않겠나.
▶I will ask for his advice about Oh Youngjong's specialty. I think he will teach me many things because he fought Oh Youngjong prior. Should I not be the one to ask first?(then to wait for oov to teach him)
-임요환의 편지가 최근 왔다던데.
-Lim Yohwans's letter arrived recently.
▶‘휴가 나와서 죽여버리겠다’는 말이 있었다. 편지가 재주가 없어서 쓸지 말지 모르겠다. 죽이지만 말아달라고 부탁하겠다. 요환이형에게 MSL에서 많이 패해 서바이버 리그에 떨어졌는데 마지막에 이겨 다행이라 생각했다.
▶He said that 'he will kill me' during his temp discharge. I am not good in writing so I am not sure if I will write back or not. I guess I will wrtie back pleading that he not kill me. I felt sorry for not living up to Yohwan hyung's expectation by losing in MSL Survivor consecutively, but I am much relieved that I have won at the last minute(referring to Starleague).
-4강전 각오는.
-Your resolution for the semifinals.
▶4강에 오를 수만 있다면 4강전에서 망신을 당해도 좋다고 생각했다. 이제 결승이 목표니 결승에서 죽어도 좋다는 각오로 경기에 임하겠다. 제주도에만 가면 죽어도 좋다. 돌아오는 티켓이 없다면 제주도에서 살겠다.
▶I once thought that if I can only make it to the semifinals, I can care less if I embarrass myself in the semifinals.
