Hey guys..

I'm not sure if this has ever been brought up before.. but has anyone suggested looking into the possibility of adding english subtitles to SC videos, like on youtube for instance?

I mean, I'm not saying Klaz, Diggity, moletrap and the rest of those guys aren't great.. they really are.. but I've always been dying to be able to understand the Korean commentators.

Now.. I understand this would be very, very hard work.. plus it would probably require collaboration between several people. BUT... I really think it would be worth it. I myself would even be willing to make a donation to anyone willing to do something like this.. I'm not sure how other people feel though. If this were to be done, it would definately be need to done well. I've seen some award ceremony videos with subtitles and a lot of the times it seems the subtitles don't really even match what the players are actually saying... or it was done very poorly. I know it's pretty ridiculous to think this could be done for all pro games... but maybe just for really big series like the OSL or MSL finals or something. I'd also love to be able to watch some of these interviews with pro players and be able to understand what they are saying. For instance... I would have loved to have known what Mind when he was being interviewed right after beating Bisu. I'd also love to be able to understand what the commentators are saying when they are doing their pre-game analysis. (like when they are all sitting at the table like on sportscenter talking to each other about the games)

Anyway.. it's just a thought. I just drool at the thought of being able to watch all of the SC games with english subtitles for the korean commentary.. maybe I'm the only one.

Some epic games have been subtitled, so perhaps it'll happen again

problem is that its really a chore to get the timings right etc I think

Yes, it has been done in the past, most prominently by Bard (no longer active).

To do proper subtitles requires more work than you can imagine. First they must watch the game and translate. Second they must break up the translation into sentences, and third they must time the sentences with the audio. It is tedious work.

If you can find a Korean who has good enough English to do it, and has the motivation, that is great. However, in my experience after a few games the motivation disappears. Money is a nice thought, but that really doesn't make a big enough difference in my experience.

How to watch Vod with the subtitle
1. I am only providing subtitle files, so you must have VODs downloaded on your computer.

2. Names of both files must match and they must be in a same folder.

For exmaple if you want to watch "GosuVSNoob.wmv", the name of subtitle must be "GosuVSNoob.smi"

3. Try to change the extension of subtitle to txt.

Ex) Boxer_Yellow.smi -> Boxer_Yellow.txt

4. If you cannot see subtitles. Turn on the subtitle option of your media player. If nothing works, try to get newest version of the player or try different media players.

5. Try Taiche's link (http://www.urusoft.net/products.php?cat=sw〈=1) and download Subtitle workshop.

You can either watch vod & subtitle with the program or convert smi file to another (ssi, adobe format, real player etc etc..)

6. Select both files together and open them together

Any suggestion or correction
Open the smi file with notepad / wordpad / subtitle editor, then you will see bunch of lines with numbers and actual subsitles.

Correct the sentences that don't make sense / Korean-English / Run-on-sentences and PM me with corrections.

Special thanks to FireBlast! for giving advice and corrections of my subtitles

COPY RIGHT THINGY
I don't mind sharing and spreading my humble subtitle files. If more people can enjoy SC Vods, I will be really glad.

But at least,

1)Let me know you are going to share my files
2)When you upload my files on other servers, be sure to mention the author (Bard) and Team Liquid (http://www.TeamLiauid.net)

They are just poorly traslated text files, but I must spend good amount of time to make them.

So at least, give me a credit of making those subtitles and Team Liquid for hosting files and giving me opportunity.

Yeah.. the more I think about it the more I realize how much work it would be. It's probably an undertaking that would need to be taken on by a company (like blizzard? heheh) or someone with enough resources to be able to do all the work involved.

Makes me wonder though.. I wonder if SC is actually popular enough in english speaking countries for this to be feasible.. For instance, if a company were to actually take on the overhead costs of legally putting the korean broadcasts onto a DVD and then hiring people to do the english subtitles. They could then maybe sell the DVD's online (like release seasons of the OSL/MSL/Proleague) I know I would definately buy it. I just don't know if there's enough interest to make it a profitable venture for a private company/entrepeneurer.

P.S. Thanks for the links to the old ones Mani.. i'll defininately check those out =)

It's pretty much an identical undertaking to that of anime fansubbing... and we have a decent number of decent fansubbing groups. If you have specific questions about subtitling video, pm me.

Whatisprotoss did one for Boxer vs Joyo I believe.

THere has been several extended discussions on this very exact subject within the last few months, so you should go look for that... pretty much everything you have brought up was covered there.

Actually, I think that was GundamVX, WiP did one for a Pringles MSL Game (Savior vs Chojja I think?).
