We had good resurgency when Sonic backed up, kudos to him and saved post KeSPA era, then Afreeca saved it and then Remastered happened but it was 5 years ago. We need something new to bring the life back to the game. whats this got to do with server availability for casual/non-pro players? No pros -> no tournaments -> no viewers -> no multiplayer -> no server. The main problem isn't even the server but ghosttown, there'll be no one to play with. So true. A lot, if not all players get into the game after watching pro-level games and getting inspired. The pro scene has to keep going to maintain that spark. We're not getting excited and logging into the game just from watching old VODs. Evidence : many players only returning after Remastered and watching ASL/BSL.
I don't worry for it for now. JD and Bisu playing this ASL, FlaSh will be back next year in no time, everything feels alright. Maybe Stork will make a comeback. Eventually all pros will fulfill their military and start playing again. I think best of the best won't leave this game until early 40s if I'm too optimistic, and if we count average player age is 28-30 so we got 10 years saved for us.

Think the only time starcraft will be in serous danger of dying is when sc generation literally dies. I doubt it'll die within our lifetime.

Growing where? in Korea yeah where else? tell me who is the promising new comer that looks like the next pro gamer? no one dude
tell me one that has appeared in the last 2years? no one new in the pro scene let alone 3rd wolrd countries trying to play a very old game,.

These discussion kinda need a lot more nuance because I think there’s an understood distinction between dead in the West vs dead in the Korea/world. Then there’s another discussion of like, is the game alive in the sense people are playing it vs ppl are watching it.
One thing I think should be a goal for the community is to build up grassroots LANs in the West. That’s something the West really needs and I feel thats what keeps smaller fighting games alive in the FGC. A real gathering at the bonfire moment. Like it could be just a side tournament at a BYOC dreamhack or a side tourney at a Blizzcon or something (if Blizz drops Remastered when Blizcon comes back). Or more ambitiously we get a gathering together, probably somewhere in LA or Netherlands or something. I think that’s something really missing from the scene, is something that gets people participating in the community like a big BYOC event.
Just a thought.

Well i said it was based on nothing but intuition, as in i feel like its growing. Just as your subjective one "what you can see in 2 yrs back".
If you ask a Korean this question who lives among SCR gamers in Seoul you will hear another story which is also subjective but might still be more real to its actual (unknown) state.
I would also argue that talking about the future of something doesnt make the future necessarily better, what you do NOW(acting) is what sets the state not what you do at 2 years forward.
This makes this whole thread obsolete and more a nostalgia thread where you get depressed because time flies, do what you need to do TODAY and dont look forward because you cant plan the future anyway.
Noone expected covid as a good example that didnt fit your future plan and most likely made you a completely new person living in isolation for so long. I know i am a new person today compared to 2019. Happier person i might add.
So instead of talking about the future of SCR we should do what we want to do TODAY, which is simply watching BSL/ASL events and keep playing the game, showing our love and support. We dont have much more control over the future than that.
The reason games die revolves around money in the end, you stop playing because you need the time for something else or the PROs dont get paid enough to live their lifestyle and need to move on to something more lucrative where there is more money to be made.
If money is pumped into SCR it can stay alive forever, if noone feels like doing that it will eventually die from starvation.

He just didn't qualify for ASL 2 times in a row. Other than that he's quite active in streaming and coaching university students.
Plus that university thing in Korea is really good at gathering funds from the crowd, so it gives players a bit of incentive to get into the game. So good that I feel a bit sad because a female BJ can earn from donation in a single day the entire budget of a BSL season.

BW will most likely still be played for decades but in terms of how popular it is today with the general population and especially younger kids, AND taking into account simply how often it's currently played, it can appropriately be deemed a "dead game". It's a lovely, fun, and influential game that cause tremendous waves in gaming and propelled the early eSports industry into what it is today. However, with all of that said, it will never be a top game again and it'll continue a decline year after year. People that love the game, like I do, hate hearing that but it's true.
Let's put it this way. When the absolute largest foreigner tournament can't garner more viewers than the average streamer girl that just throws on a bikini and turns on her stream regularly, it's not a popular game anymore. The only country it's pretty popular in anymore is South Korea. The rest of the world simply doesn't care about it and has moved on.
Honestly that's all okay though. If you love the game, hop on and play. Nothing is stopping you from enjoying the game. Just don't be delusional that it's going to grow into what it used to be or that people are suddenly going to care about it again because it won't grow into something massive and the gaming community generally doesn't care about it anymore.

Easy, switch to the CoH franchise. *funky dance ensues*
I’m sure they’ll find a way just like they did with fish and iccup and the likes so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Yeah. End of the day it was born as a game for people to have fun and entertain themselves. The popularity contest was born after.

BW will at least outlast SC2, that's for sure.
BW is so unique...I wish they'd make SC3 with the BW engine and just fix the stupid pathing and crappy mechanics. A mix between sc1 and 2..

Truer words have never been spoken! Thank you G5 for your straight insight. Enjoy it while it lasts...

It’s some what out of blizzards hands, a new map pool and server reset would be nice here and there. Otherwise best way to support the game is to donate to BSL, CPL, and other tournament, as well as subscribing to BW streamers

Another clueless fan on the pathing and engine. The pathing is what makes BW special. SC2 actually has unreal pathing. No army moves smooth like that and would break BW in terms of balance.
Also, BW is FARRRR more popular than sc2 at this point. Peak viewership for bw is on par with that of CS GO

True. SCR's "issues" is what makes it the game it is today, without it, it would be like SC2 which is IMO a worse game in gameplay.

Brood War is the Melee of video games.
