If that ever were to happen, we currently have shieldbattery.net as our refuge. In the past there were more private servers, but most of those have shut down (partly due to Blizzard's demand iirc).

What we need is a documented cleanroom reverse engineered open source clone of BW, which would put the power to fix any problems in the community's hands. There is an open source project around BW (OpenBW) but afaik it probably wouldn't hold up if they threatened that project.

This should not worry you at all. Nothing will ever stop you from opening up Starcraft and play a game, whenever, whatever. As I said, the game will never truly die. It’s been played even I 2014, I remember, when nobody pro was really playing it. But I was, and hundreds of others too. It’s just too good to be true, and is, but do not expect a presidential treatment at all times

We had good resurgency when Sonic backed up, kudos to him and saved post KeSPA era, then Afreeca saved it and then Remastered happened but it was 5 years ago. We need something new to bring the life back to the game.

My only worry is how long ASL is going to keep seasons running. So in that way will SC:BW survive. But do not expect any updates at all - they dont really care about their games any more. I think they will put a little more attention in next year, maybe an update or two.Surely some special 25th anniversary event. Have hardly played myself lately, just no time nowdays but as others said Warcraft II and Diablo I are still able to be played on battle net.The bigger issues are lack of action against hackers and general decline in user base, Doubt the server will be shut down in the next 5 years.

I think SC2 will get the most of the anniversary tbh. They will label it 25 years of StarCraft rather than 25 year anniversary of the original StarCraft. They did this for the 20th anniversary

The PR hit is apparently worth it, because it gets people to move to sequels. There is an open source project around BW (OpenBW) but afaik it probably wouldn't hold up if they threatened that project. ShieldBattery already adds features and fixes bugs on the existing game client, with no real dependency on Blizzard's servers (outside of them verifying that you've purchased whatever graphics/sounds/interface that you're trying to use, which even a full reimplementation of the client would need to do). The power is already in the community's hands, not really sure why people act like something new needs to be created.

So true. A lot, if not all players get into the game after watching pro-level games and getting inspired. The pro scene has to keep going to maintain that spark. We're not getting excited and logging into the game just from watching old VODs. Evidence : many players only returning after Remastered and watching ASL/BSL.

All in all I'm not too worried about the near future of BW. But 30 years from now? Come on, that's ridiculous, I can't imagine young people getting too much into our archaic beloved game and the older folk can't play at a pro level that long as they have other responsibilities.
