We should know by the special event, i.e. March 25.

Playing wait-and-see for 5 days doesn't require any real investment of trust, just the tiniest bit of patience.

I can do that

Of course, if they reveal absolutely nothing at the special event, then we're back to square one.

BW HD would be like the 2nd coming of Jesus. Actually, for atheists, this is the 2nd coming of Jesus.

What an exciting news! Haven't played BW for good 10 years but I would definitely buy it, regardless of how it is going to be updated.

Hmm no, I am pretty sure I speak for most bw fans when I say that I really don't care if it "looks great", the game already looks great and plays great. What they do with what's around the actual game is what's gonna matter (ladder, bnet, compatibility...).

You're right that many of us don't care that it looks great -- but the game does not look great, which is why they are even making a Remaster in the first place.

I mean, it doesn't look great on the bigger resolutions we have now but I still think that bw in its original resolution in a window of the same size looks great. The game is super clean, easy to follow and has some darker and grittier aesthetics which feel fantastic.

So yeah, I hope the game still feels the same aesthetically with the hd version, could seriously end up looking glorious, so let's wait and see.

Yea. It's easier for me to see what's actually happening in a game in bw compared to SC2. I don't see any reason the graphics need some big overhaul. Updating the aspect ratio to 16 : 9 couldn't hurt though.

16: 9 only makes sense for movies, nothing else. This 16: 9 fad should not be applied to anything else than movies.

Uh, I wouldn't exactly call it a fad... but I'd definitely rather not have 16 9 in it. Certainly changes more things than the aesthetics as people have mentioned.

However I think I'd be shocked if it didn't have it. Even if Blizzard wants to keep it as close as possible to the original can they sell a 4:3 game to anyone else in 2017? I don't know...

Hate to break it to ya, but Brood War is kinda already 16: 9.

How? Well, the UI at screen bottom takes up about 25% of the vertical room already, on average, which means the 'battlefield' part of the screen you see is more or less in 16: 9.

What might be weird/annoying to longtime BW lovers is the big change that will happen if BW changes to a 16: 9 screen overall. Because then, even with a vertically slimmed-down UI (a la SC2), the battlefield you see will be something fairly close to 21: 9, aka 'UltrawideScreen'.

Some ppl might go "Cool!" to that (probably SC2 ppl will, since they're already used to it), but, it's pretty different from how human vision works. The aspect ratio of human vision is somewhere between 4:3 and 16: 9, IIRC, and varies a bit between individuals.

So my hope kinda is, if they change to HD aspect ratios (instead of just upping resolution), they maintain support for 4:3, or failing that, at least 16:10.

Which admittedly gets complicated, since you'd have to make sure that all supported aspect ratios 'saw' the same amount of battlefield, or you'd be giving an advantage to one particular aspect ratio.

Then there's the fun of making sure wall-ins/building-gaps work properly in every instance in all supported resolutions.

Oh for sure. There is a far larger audience of people that would buy that game in a heartbeat who may not even know about the pro scene (or even care) but would buy it because of how much they enjoyed it in the past. Just like AOE2HD and all the other HD remakes.

I think Blizzard will do better than the others as they don't like to release things with major bugs/performance issues. Could be wrong and that's assuming this is real (I hope it is!).

I think if it's a for-sale product instead of a free downloadable patch (<–– hahahaha, yeah right), then Bliz can count on selling several million copies, unless they utterly and completely botch the job somehow.

And by 'botch', I don't mean by including customizable hotkeys or fixing the 'dragoon getting stuck on a ramp' bug or the umpteen other things that so-called 'purists' here rant and rave would prevent them from ever playing the new version. The vast majority of players aren't going to have that view.

Now, if they include unlimited unit select, non-optional automine, non-optional smartcasting and MBS, etc. etc., THAT would be a total botch.

THANK YOU, I'm not alone in realizing this madness. Human vision has actually been measured as being pretty close to 4:3 and people have higher productivity in almost any task on a 4:3 screen rather than 16;9. When coding/writing/reading you don't have to scroll as much and generally have a better overview. This is common knowledge among programmers, who often have to resort to flipping their 16;9 screens 90 degrees to get a 9;16 screen.

16;9 is a movie format that has been thrust upon us as a false prophet when in reality it's a bad fit for general computing. The primary reason? Cost savings for manufacturers. Any given screen size, say 24", has a much smaller actual surface area in 16;9 than in 4:3 (or 16:10 which was common not long ago).

We're all being fed diluted pig food by the manufacturers and we're happily lapping it up because we've deluded ourselves into thinking we're getting a "movie like" experience. Especially an RTS benefits innately from a more square aspect ratio as to give a better overview of the battlefield. But no, keep chirping "muh widescreen" like a good consumer and view the game from a narrow slit like a tank driver, I've heard 24fps gives a more movelike experience too.
Tyrant.

If they expect new players to buy and play this game MBS and automine are 100% required and would not change tactical part of the game, only make the macro part less crazy hard for average players.

Smartcasting and unlimited selection can be argued to be left out as both change the tactical part of the game a lot but also not including this could be a deal breaker to many people.

Is that discussion starting again now?

Sure MBS was fine in SC2, but in a remake of a SC:BW - I would call it a massive fuck up if they included it.

Maybe for 2000 people still playing BW after all these years. But I am pretty sure Blizzard want to get paid for the effort to make BWHD and that means not catering to this small group.

They could make two game modes, maybe even with two matchmaking systems but in sc2 they never wanted to have more than one so I doubt it.

I would expect they leave an option to keep the game as it is for tournament play in Korea but Matchmaking and all that will need to use a modern UI if they want new players to pick up BWHD and play it.
