Seems to be working fine, did you try clearing your cookies / cache / trying another browser?

This is just a workaround I've found convenient; works on my machine for now but wouldn't be surprised if it stops working at some stage (such as with an update, which if we're lucky might include this functionality natively anyway? :D).

It's definitely not the intention to release Ranked to split the community. That said, it is in the best interests of the ladder itself to have as many participants as possible so that everyone is ranked with maximum granularity. I would like for Ranked to be the default game mode, and I'd really like to launch with no Unranked matchmaking at all (you'd have to go through manual lobby creation). Ideally that would help to reduce ranking anxiety and generally destigmatize ladder. Then again, I'm fully aware of how widespread ladder anxiety was in SC2 when they had the same launch strategy...

I would love something like the Overwatch system where you can start at 50 and both reaching 100 (being super good) and 1 (being super bad) is quite the challenge. You have much less anxiety when you now that there are countless levels of bad below you and you really have to give everything to lose yourself to the bottom instead of "D-" being the giant pool of all levels of "bad" players including "guy that understands most stuff but plays not enough" all the way down to "grandmother not used to PCs being forced to play SB by her grandkids for comedic effect".

i share the exact opposite sentiments.
I would much prefer shieldbattery to be a server first and ladder second.
a non-competitive matchmaking is more important than a competitive one imo, because the new people would never get games otherwise, because they don't know anybody. While the better players who play competitively are more "comfortable" in bw and in the chat channels so have no problems msging other people for games.
Non competitive matchmaking is a great thing.

that being said, both matchmakings need to be in the final product, but omitting non-competitive matchmaking would be a huge mistake imo.

as for " Ideally that would help to reduce ranking anxiety and generally destigmatize ladder. "
that's not how the human psyche works I'm afraid
I don't believe you.

I cannot wait for ranked, to me, unranked matches just don't have the same level of meaning as a ranked game with your ladder rank on the line. In addition as spoiled sc2 player I find it really annoying having to find even matches with players of even skill level, especially as most active bw players seems so good.

This idea might sound silly, but what if the ladder let you pick how "serious" of a game you want to play, and matched you with others feeling the same?

Ex: Choose ladder Level:
- Try Hard (100%)
- Practice (50%)
- Casual (25%)

The percentage is how much of a discount you win/lose your points. It does not affect the other person at all. Players cannot see what each other pick, and the system will try to match you against others in the same bracket.

Would this make sense to make laddering less "stressful" ?

I know when I played sc2, the worst part about ladder is, if I was expecting a phone call or someone to come visit me, I couldn't play any games. I could only play sc2 when I had 100% dedication to gaming, which is basically never these days. I'd feel much better taking the phone call and choose Casual, knowing I would only lose 25% of my points, potentially. And hopefully the other person playing me is on Casual so they wouldn't mind pausing for me, etc.

This could actually be an interesting idea. It seems a bit arbitrary to me though, I think players would tend to play mostly Casual and may get the same level of anxiety even at the lowest "risk" level.

Don't think it's a good idea because if you're actually using ladder to get better, you want your opponents to be trying hard as well. Also, how is that any less stressful than playing an obs or melee game?

Well that is the point I guess, not everyone plays ladder to get better. Some simply enjoy matchmaking because it's easier than spamming chat with game? game anyone? game???

But those people looking to play casual will be matched more often with other casuals (where available) and those choosing 100% try-hard will be matched with other try-hards (where available).

Because let's face it, some days you can feel 100% but other days you don't feel that good and would rather play more casually and win/lose less points, but still play. In sc2 and other ladders, when you don't feel 100% you simply do not play, for fear of hurting your rank.

couldn't that be solved with a non-ladder matchmaking altogether? i can see how that introduces problems in and of itself but it seems like a better alternative than having a wishywashy ladder where you can be potentially be playing against someone dicking around with no stakes involved on their end.

externalities like life events aside, ladder rankings should provide a holistic (as possible) evaluation of skill, adding qualifiers to that seems weird. an example would be: what happens when it gets late night for a majority of players? does everyone suddenly start laddering for partial points now because everyone is more tired than they usually are? or what if someone becomes a career 25% player? this person has to play more to achieve X rank, but it's also unfair for the people he's getting matched against because his rank is purposefully held back.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

Also, what's to stop some asshole from farming "Casual" when they are just scared of playing "Try-hard" because of the same ladder anxiety that "Casuals" have about ladder in general? It'd just stratify the playing environment and divide the playing population needlessly.

On paper I think it's a great idea, but in reality it won't work, like communism. I'd love a "warm-up" option for 0 points loss potential, and maybe allow it to match you against someone else even if they didn't select the "warm-up" option and have them win rating/points and you lose none (although this could lead to point inflation). At least for the first game or two when I start laddering because computers just don't cut it, your friends aren't always on and free, and observer games are not always up from my experience. However, despite this, I'd much rather we don't subdivide the playerbase. It's either you're match-making or you're not, imo.

Shit. Thanks. Hopefully there will be XP support in the future, being that so many people (like my mother, apparently) uses XP to this day.
